Hands down the best hairdo for sorting and working cows on a windy day!
Ladies, thanks so much for sharing your morning moments with me last week on this post. So lovely to see the similarities and the differences….
Anyone got any wild or wonderful braiding techniques? Do share!
What I did above:
1) part hair in center
2) french braid down each side, braiding as far down to the tips as possible; secure with hairband.
3) take one braided tail and curve it up from your neck along the inside of the french braid of the other side. Spiral around- this depends on length of braids.
4) tuck the ends under and pin down on your head.
5) do the same in reverse with the other braid.
Essentially, the braid tails from the french braids are crossed in an X at the neck and spiraled around in opposite directions.
Hope this is clear! I just kind of invented it while fiddling.
And it’s a good arm workout, doing this to your own head!

How did you do that? I’ve always braided my hair in two pigtails and tied a bandana over my head when I’m out working or in the wind, and I would often French braid it into loops when I would bathe dogs.

I make regular braids on both sides just behind my ear. They I bring them forward and cross them in front, bringing the tails on the back of the crossed pieces. If you hair is short, you can secure them as is. Mine is long, so I must wind it around my palm and secure it with crossed long hairpins behind both ears. Then I use large vintage faux tortoise pins to secure the braids to my head on the top. I have several straw hats that will fit my head when it has braids. I also wear it as is.
I’m not great with hair and have never learned to french braid. Not on myself and not on another’s head. If I could, I’d certainly do this.
I’ve also seen starting french braiding on the top of one side of your head and working around the top in a circle to the other side, then braiding the rest and coiling it inside in top.

That looks really lovely Shreve, you did an awesome job, especially because it is a ‘self-done’ up-do…
My tip is that I put a deep-conditioner on hair before braiding as it helps prevent fly-aways, holds braids in & at bay with the added weather protection from dry-winds/sun :)
Then when you wash it out it is thick and curly :)

Very pretty! I used to occasionally french braid my hair so I know it can be very hard on your arms until you get used to it. Nice going!

That’s beautiful! I always just did a straight french braid down the back. I had very long hair at the time. It is very hard on the arms. For some reason it helped to lay back against the arm of the couch with my hair hanging over the end to braid it. The last time I did that regularly was when I was framing houses and needed it securely out of my way all day at work. I was very strong then, but my arms and neck still complained about the braiding… lol

I deal with gale force winds fairly often where I’m living right now so this could be really useful. I usually just french braid my hair but the tail still whips me in the face, so I’ll definitely try this! Thank you :)

This is so so so pretty. I’m gonna give it a shot. I ride a lot so I’m always looking for ways to be a more feminine tomboy. I would LOVE to see a video – and I bet others would too – IF you find the time and inspiration to make and share one.

Sooo lovely … makes me feel frumpy lounging in baggy unsightly sweats when no one’s around. If you can look grand doing whatever the heck it is you do with your cows, then surely I can muster the courage to do something similar. :o)

I love when the ability to look feminine is retained while doing anything that typically does not lend itself to looking so.
Try starting a French Braid about an inch and a half from your ear. Stay an inch from your hairline and braid across your forehead, continuing all the way around your head. Continue the tail and just pin it to the inside of the other braid in a coil/spiral around your head. You end up with a crown of braids, all from one French Braid!
Muscles are still built, but there is the benefit of a little shift in the muscles used as you move to different parts of your head.

Ok, as one who has had really short all her life – too thick and coarse to deal with, and I was lazy, I’m trying longer hair for the first time…. I’ve accomplished pulling it back with barrettes and a little bit with the butterfly clip – we’ll see.
Looks lovely and perfect for working with animals and wind!

I did it last night and slept on it! Works great! A little hair gel after I slept on it and it looks like I braided it this morning! I’ll have to do it again when I work outside or bathe the dogs.

Have you ever done a fishtail braid? Make a low ponytail. Split ponytail in 2 (as opposed to 3 in a regular braid). Take a SMALL amount of hair from the underside of one “split”; Cross it OVER same split and combine it with the other “split.” Do same on other side and keep alternating. You’ll use different muscles because you’re working down low…gotta even out the arms! It also keeps hair from getting knotted when you’re riding!

I am a derby girl and have hair long enough that I can tie it through the beltloops of whatever I am wearing – for practices it really really gets in the way, so I braid it in pigtails and then make little side buns with the braids.
When I am feeling adventurous (or for bouts) I pull a section about the diameter of a sharpie from one pigtail, braid it, and tie it into a noose that hangs from the center of one bun :)

OH and I like to wear the hairband combs (they kinda look like a comb that makes a circle) and braid a little piece from behind each ear to cross over the top – I pin them in place behind the opposite ear but for my cousin’s little girl who only had hair long enough for her braids to barely overlap, I held hers in place with little “monster claw” barrettes with flowers on them. Very Heidi looking :)

Shreve, I love it! It’s gorgeous!! My hair goes down past my butt, and I can never get it to look right if I do my own french braiding.. sigh. I’ll have to find some Renaissance Fair-bound person to braid it for me. :)
