Is Daisy Pregnant?

☆ June 21, 2010

shady Daisy

No.  Last week, I woke up from a very vivid dream about Daisy cycling ~ everyone was mounting her ~ even Ranger (my horse) jumped the fence to get to her and mount her.  GAH!

That day, Daisy and another steer were inseparable.  (A steer is a castrated male. He cannot get her bred but he will try.)  He stood by her side even while she was napping.  She stood for him midmorning which meant she was not pregnant from our first attempt and had to be AI’ed that evening for it to take.

However, The Caterpillar was out of the country.  In Ireland.  And the other woman in his office who does AI was off that day.  So it didn’t happen.  None of this really bothers me ~ I’m holding the faith that delaying her pregnancy is part of some grand design to avoid her calving during a horrible Spring storm.

Now I am armed with a pattern (and this is precisely why I should have been tracking Daisy’s cycles for the past five months) and can predict her next cycle.  The vet will be back in town.  It’s on the books.  We’ll see what happens!

There is just something about the curve of her cheek (her mandible, really, but that sounds less romantic) that makes me very happy.

Good luck! I know it’ll happen for her when the time is right.

i’ve been wondering: if you want daisy to calf every year to get milk, and obviously you can’t keep all her babies, are you going to eat them?

I know people have been training dogs to tell when a cow comes in heat so they can breed them. Maybe you could train charlie or chloe hahahaha (:

Since they are unrelated biologically, is there another reason you don’t want Sir Baby to extend his duties to Daisy?

kat ~ if it’s a female calf, I will keep her as a milk-cow-to-be; if its male, we shall see, there a a number of options.

mlaiuppa ~ sir baby is a beef cow, I want Daisy bred to a dairy cow (a Jersey) because I am hoping for a female calf. they aren’t interchangable, just because they’re bovines.

A lovely animal, all the more so because we know she’s so cared for.

Sorry to hear she’s not pregnant yet. I’m sure it will happen, given your commitment. That… WAS a very disturbing dream. Thanks for sharing! :)

    Lovely picture of Daisy.

Your dream about Ranger getting in on the action with Daisy reminds me of the line in “Ghostbusters” about one of the signs of the end of the world is “dogs and cats living together!” LOL.
