Lounging in the shade as I toil in the sun.
He’s a taskmaster.

He definitely looks regal, complete with the disdainful squint. Handsome tom, he is.
June 6th, 2010 @ 10:23 pm
Cats are superb supervisors.
June 6th, 2010 @ 10:42 pm
Agree with you Steph, and if not supervising, they try to “help.” Mine tried to help change the bed… yeah, took like five times longer to complete the task.
June 6th, 2010 @ 11:08 pm
There’s that big man Eli. Assana…lol!! We call it the ‘Sheet Game’ at our house. Funny how cats are. Gotta love em:>
June 6th, 2010 @ 11:30 pm
Look at that look on his face! ” There she goes again with that damn camera, these humans are so weird” He defiantely is a alpha cat..

Ah, an update on the patriarch; thank you.
Well, with his ever-growing Farmily to lord over, he needs to keep his Disdain beam on its highest setting at all times. Anything less would invite chaos, disrespectful behavior from his subjects and worst of all, late meals…
@ Assana & karen: Yes: that was one of my late companion / supervisor’s favorite duties too. Making the bed will forever remind me of him…

Eli has attitude. I love that about him.
June 7th, 2010 @ 5:38 am
I love all of your posts. I miss pictures of Eli, but since I have had cats most of my life, I know how elusive a cat can be. where I live now, no pets are allowed so i really enjoy all of yours.
Thanks for sharing your farmily!! Always interesting from the beginning with eli and charlie to horses, cows, bulls, geese. Have you ever thought of owning a buffalo??
June 7th, 2010 @ 6:18 am
oh, HUZZAH, it’s ELI!!! I was just hoping to see him last week!!!!
He is the boss. You can tell. I love it!!
June 7th, 2010 @ 7:45 am
What a handsome man. Bein’ cool, stayin’ cool!
June 7th, 2010 @ 11:17 am
…typical.
June 7th, 2010 @ 11:45 am
Eli is the emperor of the farm.
I just lost my emperor, great sadness to lose my little yellow guy. The world is not the same.
June 7th, 2010 @ 2:20 pm
I have a cat that looks almost identical to Eli! My heart has been warmed by your blog and story ever since I read your wonderful book. Your life sounds so special with all your animals.

Hello! I’m glad I found this site and could leave a comment. I really appreciate how you respond to people and respect view points and do what is true to you. It would be a kinder world if we could all do that a little more I think.
Anyway – I wanted to tell you I saw some coyote pups. I got all excited and wanted to tell you but didn’t think I could with the no comments on Daily.
We live sorta country – country compared to a city/suburb – not even close to country as you. We see foxes and the occasional coyote from a distance tho we hear them at night more than ever see them. Neighbors have seen lion tracks and I hear a black bear was sighted once.
I was driving to work and saw 2 coyote pups mebbe 10 weeks? Following their Mama in a pasture in the early morning. My car startled them – Mama went running – the pups stood still startled… I stopped my car to watch/look and they panicked running back from wence they came. Anyway – it just sorta made my day and was really neat to see.
Thanks for your work, it’s appreciated – all the best – Shanster

Ha, love this pic of Eli. Is it just me or does his expression just scream “Piss off lady, I am not your personal show pony”, I mean he is flashing the serious stink eye in that shot. Love it when the cat cops a tude :o)
June 7th, 2010 @ 6:58 pm
Love Eli! I actually see a nice mix of love, humor and disdain in that look :-)
June 7th, 2010 @ 7:42 pm
“I realize you cannot help but want to capture my handsome and regal countenance but, break time’s OVER! Back to work!!”
June 7th, 2010 @ 7:43 pm
Cats were once worshipped as gods.
They have never forgotten this.
June 7th, 2010 @ 7:54 pm
Awwww, Eli is such a handsome fella – cats just remind us to keep it all in perspective…. speaking of which, my kitty is wanting a belly rub —-
June 7th, 2010 @ 9:24 pm
LOL Eli looks like such a little bitch :) And I mean that in the kindest and sweetest way…..ha! He is da bomb!
June 8th, 2010 @ 12:47 am
So good to see Eli again! And doing what cats do best: chilling and looking on in disapproval!
June 8th, 2010 @ 6:08 am
Hehe…I have a big orange tabby at home, but mine is a bit of a weenie. Still, he can give you that disdainful look better than any cat can. :)
June 8th, 2010 @ 5:20 pm
Nice to see Eli is still ruling the roost! He is a special boy!
June 8th, 2010 @ 8:37 pm
He has such personality in his looks. I’m still quite amazed at how long he’s made it out there solo.
June 10th, 2010 @ 8:37 am
i miss not seeing or hearing about eli. in the beginning it was just eli, charlie and you, shreve. i love the farmily without exception but eli is hardly seen or heard from anymore. thanks for giving us a glimpse of the grandmaster of the estate.
June 11th, 2010 @ 6:53 pm
On my way home from the airport yesterday, I described your (Charlie) site to the cab driver, in the context of conversing about local wild coyotes killing cats in the city. Photos of missing cats are everywhere and every now and then you see warning notices about coyotes eating cats.
I told him about Eli and how smart he was with Charlie right from the beginning, never letting Charlie have the upper paw in the relationship. The driver loved the story and I’m sure by now he and his kids are visiting your web site.
June 12th, 2010 @ 6:29 pm
Adore Eli and so happy to see him being his Eli self. Love the whole farmily too, but special place in my heart for the big galoot.
June 13th, 2010 @ 7:21 pm
Sam, our orange tabby; Roxy, our tortoiseshell; Chester, our daughter’s orange tabby; and Nutmeg, her long-haired tabico, both living with us and our cats now, send their appreciation of Eli’s ability to lord it over all his domain. It’s hard work keeping those humans, not to mention assorted four-footed types, in line, but they want him to know they understand how hard he is working even if humans wrongly believe that lying down means you’re not on the job! (It’s all in the disdainful glare, Roxy says.)
June 13th, 2010 @ 8:33 pm
TOP CAT !!
June 14th, 2010 @ 10:31 am
What a handsome boy he is!
June 14th, 2010 @ 4:52 pm
I’ve always wondered, did you pick Eli specifically for his colouring? I live in Australia (inner city) and my Aunt (who lives on property in the outback) has problems with dingos attacking their domestic animals. She prefers orange tabbies because she said they blend better with the surrounds and are less likely to be attacked when they have the element of camoflage.
June 15th, 2010 @ 1:17 pm
he looks so content – a happy, healthy cat!
June 16th, 2010 @ 2:31 pm
LOL.. that looks like the look he gives Charlie as if to say move along buster this is MY spot. to Catherine..I just lost my orange tabby recently and I know how hard it is. My heart goes out to you. Thousands of wonderful memories and then one real bad one. Sigh. I worry about Shreve’s farmily as they all become older as we have come to love them too. My gosh we all have adopted Shreve’s kids! gaaaaa runs screaming…
August 24th, 2010 @ 1:42 am
He looks just like my dad’s kitty “Big guy”.
I love all your fur babies!
August 29th, 2011 @ 12:39 pm
Shreve, just wanted to let you know how much I love your book and your websites. Also, a beautiful, long-hair orange and white cat showed up at my condo back in March. I already had 4 cats and 1 dog, but I couldn’t resist – he’s absolute gorgeous and I named him ELI
August 11th, 2024 @ 6:34 am
LOVE this picture of Eli-he was so very special !!! Hope all is great with you, Shreve, take care, Jill
