no camera available

☆ June 2, 2010

Sometimes I don’t have a camera & I just try to memorize the moment:

Pulling into the driveway and seeing Daisy standing over Frisco, Frisco lying in the grass suckling her teat. Drinking from Daisy whilst lying down. Yeesh.

Charlie going absolutely nuts for the fringe surrounding a hole in the knee of Mike’s jeans. Obsessive nibbling. It looked like it tickled.

Frisco falling asleep with his head on my chest (drooling on my shirt, even) as I lay against his chest. If Escher did farm scenes, this would be it.

The smell of marjoram.

What didn’t you take a picture of today?

Today as I watched one of my cats sleeping, I thought she epitomized the concept of “luxuriating”.

Also did some people-watching in downtown Toronto today. The sight of a tall, young man carrying his small child melted my heart.

My baby parrot, asleep on a perch on my bedside table, who was not ready to wake up at the crack of dawn when my alarm went off. While balancing on one foot (the other tucked up in his downy underfeathers, staying warm), he kept his little head tucked under a wing to saw off a few more Z’s – all as I quietly sneak around the room getting dressed and ready for work without turning on the overhead lights to avoid disturbing him. How my heart swells with love for that fluffy ball of feathers every morning!!!!

A cute red fox in the park, in the middle of the city-we watched as he curiously ambled around the edges of the woods and seemed totally oblivious to me and my dog; pennies from heaven-23 pennies lying on the grocery store parking lot. I wished I had my camera in both cases – to catch the seldom seen fox and the randomness of the pennies. (yes i picked them all up)

There is a pretty strict code of camera etiquette when it comes to the casual taking of random people’s pictures while in Haiti. It is not allowed to take pictures out a car window, and if you do find a subject you wish to photograph, you must ask permission (most times it is NOT granted). So my most favorite photos have been the ones I could not take. My favorite example: While stuck in traffic in Port Au Prince last year, an old woman walked by my car window. On her head was a large straw hat, attached to, and circling the top brim, were live roosters. Their heads were at the edge of the brim, their tails in the air. She was bringing them to market, and oh how I wanted that picture. But it is always with me, at the ready anytime I want to see it. :-)

A black man, a stranger, walking into the foyer of a hotel, an average american chain hotel, with a swagger, a twinkle in his eye and looking for the graduation celebration. Oh, and he was wearing a double-breasted suit jacket in a large and loud plaid (like plaid under a microscope) that was cut nearly to his knees.

The outfit was ridiculous, but he wasn’t ridiculous. He made me smile. And wish that I could have taken a picture because I wasn’t sure I could ever adequately describe him or the moment. But even if I had a camera in my hand, I wouldn’t have taken the shot.

And I never would have shared that with anyone if you hadn’t asked what I didn’t take a picture of today. Thanks for asking the question.

My almost 2 yr old son as we took a walk today…red shorts and his favorite elephant tshirt and boots that he insisted on wearing, bright curious eyes, blond curls moving gently on the breeze, stick in hand as he jumped, stopped, strolled, wandering into yards to explore each flower, lawn ornament, or ant he could find…

Those tiny bright green seedlings-carrots, beets, spinach, lettuce, beans, corn, cucumber-as I had to sort and thin them…heartbreakingly pulling them from the soil (but saving the spinach/lettuce for a yummy salad), dirty hands, dirty feet, hot sun, smell of straw and partially composted grass as I spread mulch to keep down weeds, birds chirping, the bluest skies above….

my youngest son, who, so much like me, that we clash and daily have angry words for each other—as he exited the car this morning to get on the bus for his Grad Night Disneyland Trip (an 8 hr drive down South) eager not to go, yet already forgeting I’m there—deigns to say goodbye with a handshake. Yep, that’s what I knew I might get (oh no, not a kiss goodbye!) before he climbed aboard that bus and the worry/guilt-o meter started it’s clock. I asked “could you give your mother a handshake goodbye?” and he did. And I took that with gratitude.

9:00am this morning: Foggy grey morning mist in San Francisco’s Golden Gate Park. Silent except for sound of condensation dripping from the eucalyptus tree branches, & occasional foghorn. Two Buddhist monks in saffron robes suddenly emerge from a stand of trees, hands clasped behind themselves as they stroll peacefully down the forest pathway. Rain beading on the petals of my roses on the waterfall of color that is my pink rambler in the early summer.

Today I did not take a picture in near darkness of the fireflies dancing in the side field when I went out to put the chickens in for the night.
Sometimes it’s jut fun to stop and stare.

Saturday evenig I did not take the picture of a bright partial rain-bow (just one “leg”, never even got to the arching part) we saw while driving back from ordering a few pieces of furniture for our new house. It had been a hot day, cooled a little by a half-hearted shower, and there was a mix of clouds and blue sky over the city behind the mini-rainbow.

Sunday afternoon I did not take a picture of the patterns the maple tree’s leaves made against the hot blue sky as my friends and I sat on the patio, taking a break from moving.

The intriguing, interesting faces of blind co-workers I observed during a long, very long staff meeting this afternoon.

13 year old brown man buster dog watched me with intense, sad eyes as I walked to my car this morning.

This post made me think of something my father said to me a few years ago while we were on vacation….there was a moment where I WISHED I had a camera with me, and with full on sincerity, my father turned to me and said:

“My dear, there are some moments in life when you just don’t need a camera, you will always just REMEMBER this moment”

Since that day, I love having moments that I know I won’t need a camera to ‘remember’.

I would take a picture of:

A group of popular people bunched up together, showing what its like to be me, on the outside, being let in when you have something cool, but being kicked back out.
