Trippinggggggg.
☆ June 25, 2010
I went on a trip.
I hadn’t left Wyoming in four years.
I was apprehensive, wondering how I’d handle the hustle & bustle.
For these are my roads now:
These are my stoplights:
This is the only time I sit for any extended period:
And this is what I see:
Can you see it?
If I can spot this awesome little guy ~ less than 3 inches long and in full camo ~ from atop my moving horse, what would the bright signs and frenetic movement of the city do to my brain???
More later.
Right now I’m soaking up my kind of roads, my kind of stoplights, my Farmily, and all that is hidden.

Welcome home, S. Breathe, bathe, relax… then call me!

OMG! A Horned Lizard (aka Horny Toad down here)! I haven’t seen one of those since I was a wee little girl. Sadly, that’s been more than a few decades.
I remember they were plentiful in the field at the start of our road. We had to watch where we stepped.
I used to pet them on the head – in that little divot between their ‘horns’.
I’m so glad to see that at least one still exists in the world.

You have the right idea living out there, it looks so amazing! On my way to work in the middle of London I often think ‘I wish I could do what that lady with the coyote did…’ One day hopefully! Thanks for sharing it with all of us, it’s unbelivable inspiring!

Thanks for sharing these thoughts and images. I feel the beauty and peace of Wyoming flowing my way.

I live in the SF Bay Area, and I have to say that I like your stoplights better.
I bet Charlie gave you a warm welcome.

Nothing like going away to make you appreciate home on a whole new level.

Home is always where our hearts feel the most comfortable and our souls the most connected. Looks like you found yours. :) You are always a breath of fresh air Shreve.

I love the horned lizard pic, I was in Wyoming as a teen and loved it there and was so excited to see one. I also wish they were more common. Thanks Shreve! As always, your site makes me feel good!

Those are my stop signs too…but I only get to see them on the weekend and on my drive home in my iron horse! Texas is just as grand and beautiful! Those pictures are awesome!

Beautiful pictures. Welcome back!

I have never been to Wyoming, but it has called me since I was little. I grew up in MI, and I now live in TX.
After I get done with my MS degree, I’m going to take a road trip to Wyoming…and maybe Montana.
I really admire your blogs, and I love your photos. How you write about Charlie is wonderful, and, please don’t take this in a weird way, but you are such a beautiful person, inside and out.
I’m so glad I stumbled on The Daily Coyote, which led me here.
Usually I lurk, but I felt compelled by your beautiful pictures and serene way of life to leave a comment.
Hope you enjoyed your trip. :)

WOOT for the Horned Toad!! I had one that was a semi-pet (lived in my backyard and didn’t squirt blood at me when I petted him) when I was a little girl and have considered them one of my totem animals even since. Hope you had a wonderful time… glad you had a safe trip!
June 25th, 2010 @ 10:56 am
As usual beautiful…and I so get it…*S*
After a long winter and beautiful spring here on my hill, I’ve had to start going into the “city” again almost daily. I can’t explain what a sensory overload and how overwhelming and stressful that sometimes feels to me. Yeah, after such silence that I can hear the wings of birds as they fly overhead…traffic, the sounds of human life in a City…*whew* *L*

OH. Oh for that much space to ride in. To be able to just go and not worry about where the trail ends. To not have to worry about dogs and cars and scary mailboxes and fences. Just you & your horse, the ground & the sky. I envy the space you have so much.
That lizard is adorable. Thanks for pointing him out. I hope your trip was fun!

How wonderful. Thanks for the picture and the memories.
We used to have horned toads in the back yard when we first moved into our house. I was six.
We’d pick them up and pet them, rub their bellies and let them go. We loved them. They hated us.
Horned toads to NOT like people. They don’t like civilization. And when homes to in, horned toads move out.
I don’t think there are any in the canyons anymore either.
The canyon behind our house is part of a nature preserve. There are coyotes, red tailed hawks, squirrels, oppossums, foxes and other wildlife. We still have lizards sunning themselves in the yard and the occasional snake.
But no more horned toads.
I miss them but I understand why they’re not around.
Thanks for the picture.

Wonderful, lush shots. I hope you had a great vacation and I can hardly wait to hear where you went. I hope it was somewhere near an ocean.
June 25th, 2010 @ 12:29 pm
It’s been a long time since I’ve seen a Horned Toad. We had them as pets as kids and used to race them.
June 25th, 2010 @ 5:48 pm
What is that a picture of — the sitting for extended periods?? Stupid question, but I ask them now and again.
Gorgeous country.
June 25th, 2010 @ 5:52 pm
Laurie, she’s in the saddle~ probably riding Ranger!
June 25th, 2010 @ 6:46 pm
Horned toad looks mad. Well, they always kinda look that way. Little does he know that now he is not only not hidden, he is famous! Run lil guy run!
June 25th, 2010 @ 7:31 pm
They were common in Southeast Texas when I was little. Had one as a pet. I made a little harness and leash out of some string and walked him daily. I don’t remember what happened to him, but he was never in a prison of our making.
June 25th, 2010 @ 10:02 pm
We could all do with a few of those roads, though of course if all of us did, those roads wouldn’t be what they are.
I’m happy just knowing they exist.
June 26th, 2010 @ 12:29 am
I want to live the way you do. Sadly, I cannot and still do the work I need to do in this life.
I hope to compromise. Move far enough out of the city that I can hear the wind sighing in the trees. But not so far that I spend hours commuting everyday.
The city is so LOUD even when you can’t hear it. Two miles off there is a light rail. The bells make one heckuva racket. At 2 am it can be heard clearly from a mile away in my backyard. In the day the ambient noise makes the thought of hearing a racket a mile away just a joke.

Sometimes the best part of a trip is coming home.
June 26th, 2010 @ 7:58 am
The hustle and bustle of big cities wears me down. I’ve lived in SFO and LA – originally from the midwest – which is slowly becoming overgronw as well.
It’s why I live in Utah – which has experienced quite a bit of growth the past 20 years.
You live in a wonderful place. I hope it stays that way.
June 26th, 2010 @ 9:46 am
Those are gorgeous shots! What lens did you use?
June 26th, 2010 @ 10:30 am
these are all taken with my little cheapo point & shoot…….
June 26th, 2010 @ 11:28 am
your written and self-expression is always soooo magical! i have your book marked with so many little colored tabs for the re-read….might as well remove them, as there are just too many! never a need to ‘craft’ your words, sentences and paragraphs…just record your beautiful thoughts which flow from your heart. it’s no wonder you have a following.
June 26th, 2010 @ 11:40 am
I would take your sights any day. It is magical.
June 26th, 2010 @ 3:17 pm
I love the visions of your roads and stoplights…the flowers’ sharp forms and colors in the midst of earth and sage are indeed arresting! Thanks so much for sharing these.
The horned lizard’s shadow gives him away. I do admire these tenacious little guys.
June 27th, 2010 @ 3:12 am
Mariposa lily! Every single one has different nectar markings…just like us.
June 27th, 2010 @ 9:36 am
Little point and shoot…wow…the photos are amazing and so is the landscape.
June 28th, 2010 @ 5:28 am
Love the pics! I remember reading about horned toads as a reptile loving kid.
Was wondering if Charlie ever came along on your rides with Ranger?
June 28th, 2010 @ 10:16 am
I can’t wait to read how the change from quiet to loud affected you. I battle with this everyday, living in a large city while every ounce of my being longs for the exact scenes you’ve photographed here. It was New Mexico that stole my heart and I lived there and it was home… except finding work was hard and I had to run back to the city to survive. I thought it was only me, that somehow I just haven’t yet found a way to cope with the chaos that is the downside of a wonderful and lively city. I’ve figured eventually I’d “get it” and deal and be able to live here without longing for the dirt and the clouds. But this post here of yours makes me feel not so alone and like someone else understands what I’m blabbering about here. So I can’t wait to read more :)

Great post. Thanks for sharing. I live vicariously through you.

Your hand on that picture – the shape, the muscles, the sinew – especially the colour of your skin – says it all. You have a great life. I am slightly envious!
June 29th, 2010 @ 11:51 am
Precious horned toad!!! Beautiful flowers, too, and your view from the horse, incredible.
June 29th, 2010 @ 6:44 pm
First one to spot the first horny toad of the season gets an extra dollop of good luck!
July 6th, 2010 @ 9:32 pm
wondering how did you handle the hustle and bustle ??
