scalastring

string on a windowsill. nyc, 2000.

Since my attentions are required elsewhere for the next few days and posting will be minimal if at all, I thought I’d open space up for you to share your windowlight portraits!  Would love to see what you see.  And by portrait, I mean human, animal, vegetable, running shoe, whatever.  Windowlight is beautiful light, even when just shooting string on a windowsill (oh, what a meditation that was…)

Leave a link to your photo(s) in the comment section if you are so inclined!

Our view of Lake Union, in Seattle, is pretty wonderful. Here’s a sunrise:

@suzanne – thanks for sharing both shots… I plan on trying this out on the weekend and while I completely understand the ‘science’ behind how this works, my brain is having trouble believing it will work. And moreso, that I can pull it off.

@shreve – thanks so much for sharing the ‘how’ behind your grasshopper photo. I’m enough of a newbie photo geek that I was wondering how you got that shot. Your explanation and then your further post about the importance of the quality of the lens has got me shopping for a new lens (and not worrying aobut my very old camera body).

I’ll share what happens when I try. :-)

I took a couple of pictures of butterflies in a window display of a jewelry store in the lobby of the building I work in. I love butterflies and these fake butterflies were really pretty.

This next one is not so much window light but placing objects on a window sill. I was playing with a lens baby and shutter speeds to get the right glow.

I am a rank amateur photographer but I’ve actually recently been experimenting with window light. Here’s a photo of my favourite subject, my parrot Merlin, sitting on my knee looking out a window. I was impressed with my ability to take an indoor picture without flash or other touch-ups, just by adjusting my speed and exposure settings on my dslr.

This is one of my favorites. It’s from about 1993 so I had to scan in the negative. It looks a little washed out, but the original is much better: http://cabin77.tumblr.com/post/405619561/garbo-1993

And here is the same subject, 13 years later. She was on my bed and the morning light was coming in from her right (the left of the photo).

Mi Hija was a gentle, happy soul, the best dog EVER. (I am not going to debate this point.) But she loved to chew up toys, and there came a point where I realized that the pieces of tennis balls and Kongs never had to be cleaned up anymore; they magically disappeared. This was not healthy. After failed experiments with antlers, hooves, doggy dental rings, and other apparently still edible objects, I found one thing she could happily destroy but not eat: pinecones. And we were blessed to have a tree across the street that dropped a regular supply of mostly-closed, smooth pinecones, for free! She would peel off pips one at a time and eject them onto the rug. I would sweep them out the front door into the planter, where they became mulch.

It was a great comfort to me, as I struggled to care for her in the last days of her life and prepare to say goodbye, when I noticed several tiny pine trees sprouting up beside the front door. I knelt down to smell their piney scent, proof that they were real, and wept in awe and gratitude to have the circle of life go one more round before my eyes. I called them the Mi Hija Trees. When I moved, I took one with me and this is it on my windowsill of my loft apartment in downtown Los Angeles. It is my most dear possession.

    http://www.flickr.com/photos/7679935@N05/4833982786/

It has since received a haircut from a bonsai expert who is teaching me to care for and shape it. I miss my girl, every day. But her spirit lives on in me and her tree.

Mi Hija, for the record, happy in the garden:
