Clarification.

22 vs 44

To make things perfectly clear re/the post below, Part IV:

Neither Mike nor I are DIRECTING ANYONE to SHOOT ANYONE in the LEG!

His words are a visceral and accurate description of the .44 Mag.  If you shoot someone in the leg with a .22, they will continue moving forward.

Here’s a photo showing the difference.  You can see my shot with a .22 pistol next to the Pepsi logo near the center of the can.  And then Mike’s shot with a .44 Magnum made the enormous gash.  We were standing side by side, about 30′ from the can when we did this.  The .22 makes a sharp loud crack when it’s fired, and the can didn’t really move when I shot it.  When Mike shot his .44, I felt the boom under my feet.  The can flew.  This is all to say, the .44 Mag is a beast.  It’s to protect oneself against grizzlies.  And this happens to be the gun the cops found, loaded, on the stalker when they arrested him.

To reiterate, in stating these comparisons, I’m not advising to shoot the leg.  Or to shoot once.  Or to shoot at all.  I am not advising, period.

Guns are an enormous responsibility and no one should learn technique from a website!  That should be done in a safe, hands-on environment with skilled, safety-oriented mentors.  I am not giving tactical advice here.  OK?  OK.

    Gotcha.
Just so you know…had he come, had you been alone at the time, I would not have blamed you for shooting. You have to protect not only you, but Charlie, Chloe, Daisy, Eli…etc. etc….the farmily. Deadly force is to be used when all other options are off the table.

Lets all be thankful it never got there! *hug*

OMG, I can only imagine the emails you got that required this response. A couple guy friends of mine, who are military, taught me to shoot because as a single female they felt I should know how. I was fine with the .22, the 45 just about knocked me on my butt. And I’m very thankful that you never had to make the choice as to weather to use it or not.

I think often of the flack/crap you have to put up with in these comments. If people would just read, then reread what they write or maybe even run it by someone else first, it would probably help. Without the benefit of inflection, emails can be terribly misconstrued or hurtful. We could probably all use a course in email etiquette. A dash of humility in all we say. Anyway, peace and safety to everyone.

For a while, youtube actually had something like that; I don’t know if they still do. It was pretty amazing, though.

You are an amazing woman, and I’ve been a fan since I saw the Daily Coyote linked on Cuteoverload (two years ago? three? the time flies). I can’t see how anything you’ve done in regard to this awful person could be construed as less than admirable.

My husband thought it would be a good idea for me to learn how to shoot his 9mm, which I enjoy shooting for fun. But if it ever came down to actually using it for protection I’m not sure I could do it, which would put me more at risk. So I have mace and am looking into a stun gun for my own protection. These are things I will use if I have to.

Anyone who has read the Millennium series should know that a .22 is survivable. Hello, Lisabeth Salander! ;-)

Also, my god are people idiots?! This entry shouldn’t be necessary to even post. Fucking monkeys.

Aside from that, I have to say Mama Pants (my mom) emailed me after that last post and said she hoped the conclusion ended with a large bang. Pun intended. (She also noted that she was pretty sure it didn’t.) So you know, we’re on your side, Big Bang, Little Bang, or No Bang.

Man, all this banging…. Reminds me of college.

I’m not a tough, physical and fighter type woman. I live in Canada where unfortunately the gun laws are different than they are for the States.

If anyone ever broke into my house, came onto my property with the intention to hurt myself, my daughter, my family or my dogs, I would do whatever it took to self defend us at that time. The after math consequences wouldn’t even be a thought.

I envy you for being tough, couragous and most of all for standing up for youself.

Know that you always have the right intentions and should not have to clarify anything from your decision to raise Charlie to deciding to hold a gun to protect yourself.

Hang in there & all the best Shreve!

I’m also amused/annoyed that you had to write a “clarification” post. But even more curious why you felt you “had” to? Let people think what they will~they’re going to anyway. What you say or do, or how you handle yourself in your day-to-day or during times of adversity, is no one’s business but your own.

Jeebuz! People thought you were telling them shoot? Oy vey. Glad I live in Canada where guns are illegal and this is not an issue! Too bad you are forced to have a gun to respond to his gun. Anyhow, be safe.

Also, I’m interested in the difference between a .44 Magnum and my father’s Taurus Judge. I haven’t shot the latter yet, but on the next round at the range, I intend to. Any thoughts? Thus far, my favourite to shoot for accuracy’s sake is the Glock 19. I can blow that little paper man’s 10-spot to bits with that fucker.

That sounded a little crazy, didn’t it? Good thing I’m not stalker material. There’s a lot of work involved in that. Frankly, I’m far too lazy.

You cannot control the reactions people have to your writing, you can only control your content, your writing.
Some people would like to control others reactions, that is not possible. You are telling your story, you are the story teller, we are the “comment section”. You cannot control the perception people get from your writing.
Email you get, are about people trying to control the perception we get from your writing.
Your intentions are honest. The commentariat, here, I feel is pretty honest. No need for you to explain what you meant.

    November 12th, 2010 @ 11:17 am

well yeah, you shouldn’t shoot someone in the leg. that means they can still get up and come after you. torso shots are key, and even a well placed .22 to the head can put someone down permanently.

…i know, i know, that wasn’t the intention of this post. just wanted to point out you’ve got a reader here who supports your choice to defend yourself with deadly force.

but… but…. we all kinda wanna come out with guns blazing and stuff ! I think the more important point is the legal issue as to whether an alleged criminal should have more time to freshen up before being arrested.

when the conversation turns to guns it seems to spin out of control rather quickly, people often feel very inspired and empowered. there is evidence in that simply look at all the gun drama in entertainment media. wow.. entertainment value in acting out what you would or wouldn’t, should or shouldn’t do with a gun?.. yeeup.

people raised around guns seem to properly yawn at all the spin because after all most would agree that guns are simply tools to have in one’s toolbox. but on the other side of that coin is a lot of passion since the conversation seems also to bring out expressions of personal freedom. when i was reading all the posts about the potential for violence and such i was thinking wow people are nuts on this stuff. but in a broader sense i could also say wow look at the love that people show just wanting to help.

when you walk away from talking about guns, it’s usually with a lot of grimacing and eye rolling. then you have a seat on your porch with ‘old betsy’ in your lap and you just feel better.

I don’t know anything about guns and found your picture VERY interesting and very chilling, too. I have been a follower of daily coyote for a long time and it has always been clear that you are a strong woman with a VERY gentle soul. How somebody could have thought you were saying you were going to shoot somebody unless provoked is quite beyond me. I hope you are safe and that he is gone… I’m looking forward to the next part just to hear that he WENT AWAY, please tell us he is GONE!! I know they didn’t keep him locked up but I sure as heck hope he was run out of town.

This whole thing has been so heartbreaking and disgusting at the same time. I hope it’s over.

Eeek! As one who contributed to need for this post, mea culpa! Mea MAXIMU culpa!

Although, I must say, excellent visual. :D

In my defense, which really is just an excuse, but I won’t let that stop me – LOL – first of all, I feel an affinity. I live in the same state, I milk me some cows, and my time with them, and all my animals – has given me such incredible insights about the circle of life, and the web of this world, and love, and trust, and generosity… it’s hard not to feel a kind of sisterhood with someone who obviously “gets” that.

I, too, am out in the semi-boonies, and have had some hard lessons in the fact that, especially with a rural, isolated lifestyle, you sometimes have to be prepared to make split second, difficult decisions, with serious implications. I wouldn’t trade those lessons, it’s all part of my growth, and has made me a stronger, better woman in all ways – although at the time, I dearly wished to be anywhere else!

My experience is that when you are in a place that you feel the need to arm yourself, especially as a woman, it’s pivotal. If you are nurturing and loving and peaceful, and have a generous heart by nature, it’s hard to fathom yourself as a person who could purposely harm someone. It takes a lot of introspection, a lot of prioritizing, and a sometimes uncomfortable shift in how you view the world, and your place in it.

It’s easy, but dangerous, to delude yourself about options that you may not have. It’s easy, but dangerous, to script scenarios in your head that in reality, would probably not end the way you would want them to.

For me, this process has left me feeling 90% empowered, and 10% … unsettled. In my comment before, I was projecting my own remaining unsettled feelings, unfairly, on Shreve. For that, I apologize deeply.

TGW – good for you for knowing your limitations.

Oh my god.. The stalker had a gun that’s use is often dealing with grizzlies?

Took a moment for it to sink in, to be honest. Oh Shreve.. This story just keeps growing more terrible by the post. I hope, as well as everyone else, that this is the last time you ever have to face and deal with such a situation. I hope he is forever gone from your life and the farmily, and his shadow will never darken your proverbial doorstep again. Ever. (And I hope no one else takes his place)

All these comments and the previous ones just kind of lays out the diversity of what people can and do not think. Remember Law Enforcement (ie: Sheriffs, Deputies, Police Officers, FBI agents, Canadian Mounties and such) are all about enforcing the Law after it is broken. Security is about taking care of yourself, by yourself before any thing happens. You can do all the right things and still wind up in a bad situation. The most important thing to remember is if some one intends you harm, your ultimate safety is up to you. You did the right thing by calling in law enforcement and it has fixed this problem. But still your security is up to you not law enforcement. Get a security device that you are comfortable with and learn to use it competently. Me I prefer a gun. Dead stalkers can’t testify as to your intent and don’t make repeat offenders. Keep your head up, be strong and hit what you aim at.

I’ve been reading your story and have felt all sorts of things in response to what you have gone through. But this post right here, just made me feel physically ill. You had stated at the beginning that the stalker had a loaded .44, but I had forgotten. And I also didn’t understand the power of that weapon until your description of it in the last post. Your reminder that he had that weapon (and loaded!) after explaining exactly what it can do just made me sick, ill, ugh.

    I’m so glad you’re safe.

  46. Camille
    November 12th, 2010 @ 6:25 pm

.44 Mags are the ONLY pistols I WON’T shoot. Well, considering handguns aren’t really my forte, XD
But guys, what Shreve’s saying is truefax. The .44 Magnum is a force to be reckoned with. Even wearing earplugs, all I hear is ringing after they’re fired. When I shoot any of my rifles, I never really feel the report, but you can feel a .44 reverberating in your chest. My dad’s .44 is so heavy that he needs to wear suspenders when he has one in his belt holster. Trust me- if you’re shot in the leg by one, consider it amputated. Almost any gun of any caliber can fatally wound you- no matter if it’s a BB gun, be aware of what you’re doing, what you plan to do, and that you CAN kill somebody if you mess up.
If you feel threatened, contact law enforcement first. It’s easier to get into trouble than it is to get out of it.
If you guys want to learn safe gun handling, there are many classes provided by your state government that you can take to learn proper gun safety.

  47. Roxanne
    November 12th, 2010 @ 7:47 pm

  49. Amber
    November 12th, 2010 @ 9:05 pm

I am a bleeding-heart liberal on all issues except one: gun ownership. I *do* want gun ownership to be regulated, and more strictly than it is now (teenagers have to pass a written and driving test to legally drive a vehicle, anyone should have to show some level of competence in shooting and handling a gun order to get a gun license).

But I think every girl should learn to use a handgun, starting early, along with the understanding that her well-being and personal space are worth defending with deadly force. Just imagine if the women of the world were armed, comfortable using a handgun, and of the mindset that yes, anyone who tries to harm me deserves to be shot.

I have to believe assaults, rapes, and other violent crimes against women would decease dramatically if women always had a gun close by, were trained, practiced, and confident in its use, and believed to their core that they are worth defending with deadly force if necessary.

“And this happens to be the gun the cops found, loaded, on the stalker when they arrested him.”

    OH. MY. GOD.

  51. Rhea
    November 12th, 2010 @ 10:50 pm

Oh Amber & Leslie – more gun regulations won’t solve the problem. Honest, decent gun owners do follow the rules and more regulations only make it harder for them. Criminals & other “bad guys” don’t give a hoot about gun laws. They don’t usually obtain their guns through legal channels. New laws are not going to stop bad guys from getting/carrying a gun.

    I understand.
It appears that everything Shreve writes from now on must be explained so it is not interpreted as an invitation to do anything!!
If you have been a loyal reader, you will know that Shreve has not once invited anyone to come and visit, yet, some sick indivitual has decided that she has said just the opposite. In fact, I do beleive she has posted to NOT come to Ten Sleep and seek her out. Again, not what the deranged mind read.
I see why this post needed a clarification and it is unfortunate and it is reality.
I emailed Shreve when she first came on the scene to get ready for a wild ride. Unfortunately, this is not the wild I was thinking of.
Hang in there kid, you have alot of positive energy behind you.

  54. Amber
    November 13th, 2010 @ 12:12 pm

@Rhea – That’s not at all why I support the regulation of gun ownership. Of course “bad guys” will always have guns regardless of regulation.

But non-criminal gun owners includes a lot of people who would only ever use a gun in self-defense, but haven’t bothered to learn how to handle, clean, and shoot it safely. This is a HUGE problem and accounts for many (if not most) of the accidental gun injuries in the U.S. Categorizing all the good guys as “honest, decent gun owners” and deciding they don’t need to be accountable for their gun ownership is incredibly short-sighted.

Most people don’t use their vehicles as get-away cars, but I’m still glad states require proof of driving competence in order to get a license.

    November 13th, 2010 @ 2:53 pm

Well *of course* you aren’t advising!

Guns are tools, just as dangerous as table saws and large vehicles. They can all kill you (or someone else) just as dead.

    Responsibility is definitely required first.

  57. Jim
    November 13th, 2010 @ 2:58 pm

@Amber – Do you realize that well over 99% of all car accidents that happen are created by people who have completed a drivers license test and have there drivers license. hmm
Also, there are a lot less accidental shootings than car accidents and yet there are more guns out there than cars. Licensing does not cure anything. And just for the record Stalking is against the law but that did not stop this guy. Your personal security is up to you not the law or any licensing requirements. All licensing does is slow down the process for a legal law abiding person to obtain a gun and provide the law breaker time to freshen’ up.. :) Enough is enough on this gun thing we just need to have Shreeve stay safe.

Shreve: this is not a book, it’s a MOVIE! Let’s cast it: who plays you, if you can’t act? How about Gywynth Paltrow? NOt Cameron Diaz, I think. And how about MC? Harrison Ford too old? John Hamm? Some animal trainer will have to get a Charlie look a like and train him to do the things Charlie already does. Chloe and Daisy and the goose all play themselves.

Well, here I am just like that bad penny. And here’s what I think we’re going to read in your next installment. The judge, who needs to be taken out behind some building and taught a lesson, told you something to the effect of: “Well Ms. Stockton, you are a public person. You put yourself out there, didn’t you. Mr. sorryass loser, is sorry for what he did. He didn’t hurt you, did he? (The fact that he didn’t is only because you were vigilant.) So we’re just going to slap him on the wrist and let him go.

The thing that makes me sick here, is that if you or Mike shot him when he was coming to kill you, the two of you would be rotting in some jail for the rest of your lives, but he gets to go free. What is wrong with our country? Girlfriend, I will miss you if you dump this, but if dumping this means you get to live free, do it and don’t look back.

Yikes, had forgotten this misbegotten person had a weapon.
I’m not fond of guns, don’t even like looking at them. Think it’s because I know if you pick it up you better use it. I already know if I had to I could. That’s the scary part.

As far as clarification needed, don’t feel you have to. As someone who once spent waaaaaaaaay too many hours on the computer, all I can say, is STEP AWAY FROM THE COMPUTER!

Go outside, where the REAL world is.

I’d say we shouldn’t get into the subject of gun control, regardless of your position. That’s not the point of this post.

Shreve, as ridiculous as it is that you had to do this, there’s something that makes me smile about the idea that you and Mike were thinking, “What can we both shoot that will show the difference in the guns?”.

Suddenly, you’re outside with a Pepsi can and a camera.

I too am sorry you have to clarify your post, but I’m so glad you are telling your story. It needs to be told, and hopefully it will shed some light for the women out here who think they will never be bothered.

Both my mother and I have a permit to carry. And we do. All of us women should be very well versed on protecting ourselves. Stalker or not. Using guns or otherwise.

Shreve – I just wanted to tell you that your experience was one of the reasons that I recently asked some of my friends to teach me how to shoot. They regularly shoot both .22s and high-powered rifles at a range and at the ripe old age of 50, I decided it was time for me to see what guns were all about. It turns out that I have a pretty good eye and by the second time out, I beat the guy who taught me by 5 points! At this point, I’m only shooting for fun doing target practice, but now that I have some first-hand exposure to weapons, I feel a lot more comfortable that if I were in a position to be worried about my safety, I’d be more willing to buy a gun and learn to shoot it accurately for my own protection.

While I’m certainly horrified that you’ve had to deal with this situation at all, I have to thank you for the fact that I feel much more empowered to protect myself if it were to become necessary. Thank you for sharing your story and making that possible.

The crap you put up with on this blog…You’ve got the patience of a saint, Shreve, because I would’ve turned comments off long ago. I couldn’t handle the negative emotions created by having to deal with commenters that range from idiots to stalkers on a daily basis.

Shot a .22 once time. I was quite good for it to have been my first time ever firing a gun!

Really?? People were such idiots as to take what you said in such a way that you had to clarify it? Give me a break! The reason we own guns is to protect our families, and for those of us who love elk, venison, etc. we hunt with them. I was raised to only hunt what I would put on my table to eat! But if someone was coming after a member of my family, I operate on the 3 “S”s, shoot shovel and shut-up theory, if they are coming after me than I have nooo problem taking them out, just like I would a rabid animal.

I just finished reading your book, THE DAILY COYOTE. My husband bought it for $5.98 from the Barnes and Nobles bargain table because it caught his eye. I, however, stole it and read every spare minute while we were camping at a state park last week with his 2 brothers and their wives. I found it fascinating on many levels. Your blogs are probably equally fascinating but I fear I might get addicted so will only drop in occasionally.

All the best to you and Mike and all your animal children, especially Charlie and Eli. I hope your journey continues to lead you into fun and knowledge and growth, as it obviously has so far. There are ups and downs always. Moving along is the key I think, regardless of up or down or on a detour or a backtrack…may we all just keep moving. I once hiked for 2 months, 400 miles of the Appalachian Trail in 4 states, and literally and every other way, my daily focus was one foot in front of the other.

REALLY?! Someone had issues with the logic-based, instructional remark by Mike about shooting a .44 Magnum? WhatEVER! I’m already thinkin’ the stalker NEEDS to fly back thirty feet… and then some. (Hmmm… if you hit both legs, does he fly back 60 feet? Sorry, couldn’t help myself…) My brother has a .44 Mag. for the grizzlies who come a bit too close to his Alaska home. Thank God he hasn’t had to use it, but I see no difference between a bad-tempered grizz and a nutball stalker. I take that back… the nutball stalker gives grizzlies a bad name.

    Oh, big hugs to Frisco.

What do you do? Gallon of Vick’s vaporub? Hot tea?

    Are there antibiotics for that?

Wishing both you and Frisco strength and health. Can your vet give him penicillin or some other antibiotic? Keep him warm and hydrated and tell him lots of foks are pulling for him.

“this [.44] happens to be the gun the cops found, loaded, on the stalker when they arrested him.”

OMG, Shreve! After seeing what Mike’s .44 did to the Pepsi can (especially compared to your .22), I am truly horrified that the jerk had such a deadly weapon. I can only hope his gun was confiscated when he was arrested and that he didn’t get it back after the trial!

Certified Pistol Instructor here. I get the feeling you are being trained well by Mr. Mike. Tilt the gun to a 45 degree angle and start speaking “gangsta”! LOL!

I was hiking in bear country Montana last July. I ran into a very nice woman and her 70ish mother out on the trails. The younger (45ish) woman was strapped with the same .44 I had on. When I asked about it her mother exclaimed “If you are going to bother packing in this area it damn well better be something that will make a difference!”

    Very cute.

    Amber,

You are wrong. Most women are attacked/assaulted/raped by men they KNOW, and most often in their own home. This means that no, absolutely NOT, being trained in and carrying a gun is NOT going to result in a significant decline in women being hurt. Unless you actually believe that most women will be inclined to have a gun on their person even while they’re at home, and will also be inclined to shoot someone they already implicitly trust.

I am most emphatically NOT against guns, though I don’t carry one myself and never will. But the reality is that NO NO NO NO, arming women with guns and training them in their proper use will NOT magically bring about the end of their abuse. Sure it sounds like a great idea, but applying even just a little bit of logic and thinking through the implications will show that it’s a fool’s hope. Even under the best of circumstances, unless a woman is walking around with a gun aimed and ready to shoot the first man that gives her a dirty look, arming women is NOT the freaking solution to their being assaulted. And this is without considering that after shooting a man, a woman then will have to deal with people wondering if she overreacted, and was that guy REALLY a threat to her, and does she REALLY look/sound/behave like a woman who was afraid of being attacked? You only have to look at how women are treated when they try to report being physically abused or raped to see that that is a VERY likely scenario.

Oh wow, he had a loaded gun. Good Lord! I’m so sorry! I found “the daily coyote” back in ’05 and it’s been a long time since I last checked the site. Just found your “new” site, HRD.

I’m glad you have Mike and your collective furry family members. Please stay safe! And congrats on knowing you can and will defend yourself if necessary. I really hope it isn’t. Good people deserve good things and good happy days.

Happy New Year to you and yours!

I carry a gun for work, I’ve shot different types of firearms in the military. And I’m pretty darn good at shooting! But I have never owned a gun in my life. Such a huge responsibility. Haven’t yet felt the need.
But you have a right to feel safe, a right to own a gun. and if that makes you feel safe(r) and you feel it will keep you safe, so be it. You are wise and brave. a kickass combo if you ask me : )
