Redhead!

☆ May 28, 2011

first day first pic

Or Strawberry Blond.

Pink?

Toast.

Chestnut?

Fawn?

I honestly don’t know what color this is.
I just know she’s gorgeous.

If you missed the twitter yesterday, Daisy had her baby!  It’s a girl!

She’s unnamed, as yet; feel free to leave your suggestions in the comment section.  But keep in mind: a dairy cow’s name requires special consideration ~
in addition to sounding nice spoken, it must also be easily hollered across a field to call her in.  “Daisy” sounds exactly the same in a speaking voice and when hollered.  “Fawn,” for example, would be a sweet name but it’s a very difficult word to holler and the whole sound of the word changes.  These are the things you never think about until you have a free-ranging dairy cow!

Oh I know what you mean, names are very important. I have a black rock hen called Inara and she comes when I call her name! And so does Shelley, my little bantam. Daisy, Buttercup, Clover and Rose don’t answer to their names yet though. (They’re calder rangers.)

How about Chestnut? Or as I’ve swiped Daisy, how about Buttercup? My Buttercup hen is almost the same colour as Daisy’s new baby!

I don’t know anything about naming free range dairy cows, but she is certainly ‘Precious’!

re: Color, she looks toffee to me…a tawny coffee…

Well, your horse is named ‘flicka’, perhaps you’d enjoy a Swedish name for your cow as well?

Cows in Swedish are often named things like Gullros, Rosa, Gull, Väna or Doris. Most of the names relate to flowers or colour properties.

Otherwise, if you prefer to name it in Swedish, but not LIKE the Swedish would. I’d suggest a word such as Kalvinna, Kalven or perhaps Kossan! (The latter two means ‘the calf’ and the ‘cow’ respectively, the first is a play on words and can be read to mean ‘the female calf’ – but it isn’t a “real” word.)

She is beautiful. I bet Daisy is “over the moon”.
    Molly for molasses,
Honey because there are nice carmel looking honeys and I do like Lucy from the post above.

Titian. (Adjective: (of hair) Bright golden auburn: “a mass of Titian curls”.)

As to the color, if she were a horse, would she be strawberry roan, or red roan?

  16. M. V.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:38 am

She is as beautiful as her mother.

How about “Cynthia” for an official name. If you need to call her, just holler “Cindy”!

A combination of her colour and her mother’s name.

  17. ellen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:39 am

She’s captivating! What a cutie. How about Trixie?

(Titian is pronounced TI-shun, and comes from the Italian painter Tiziano Vecellio, who adored and painted women with a particular flaming color hair.)

    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:42 am

Blossom was the name that first popped into my head, but others have suggested good ones too! I like Strawb’ry in particular… ^-^ How about Flower or Pinky (thinking of the cartoon characters)?

  23. Calico
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:48 am

Oh, she’s so beautiful! Maybe flower names – to match her mama. How about Rosie (for her colour too), Lily, or Clover ?
    She sure has Daisy’s face!

  24. Rose Marie B

Congrats to the farmily! Since she is perfection -my first thought was Heaven. If we’re going for color themed name what about Ginger? All I know is that I love her! :)

  25. C. J.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:53 am

Congratulations to you and Daisy! Naming a newborn is so challenging, isn’t it? Here are a few more ideas to add to the substantial list: Petunia, Ginger, HoneyDawn

It only makes sense for Daisy’s calf to be as gorgeous as Daisy.

    What about Paisley?

Add another vote for Rose or Rosie.

  37. Lissa T
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:15 am

Oh my goodness, look at those eyelashes!
    *plink plink*

She’s almost a hazelnut color in the photo. Can “Hazel” be yelled across a field? Or possibly “Nutella”? ;)

Good job, Daisy! What a precious sweetie-girl. And, congratulations, Shreve.
As far as names – how about Rosie Rosebud. My dog’s name is Rosie, but she is so pretty, I call her Rosebud or Rosie Rosebud. She answers to all three, now.

    She’s incredible! Congrats!

Thought of a couple names including Bonita since she’s cuter then a bugs ear and Calli also because she’s such a beautiful little gal!

  43. wyomama
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:28 am

Ah, what a sweetie! My *dark* Brown Swiss/Jersey cow makes red babies with my Black Angus bull, too. Whouda thumk it?

Save at least a quart or a half gallon of colostrum in Mikes freezer – it might not taste yummy, but it’s magical stuff.

When you name this angel baby, remember her name also cannot rhyme with Daisy, else they can’t tell the difference when you are hollering. :)

  44. Catherine C.

    Sassafras! Sassy for short :-)

  45. Dusty

Karmel (as in “caramel” for her color, but shorter sounding)

  53. Karen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:56 am

She is absolutely beautiful- I am so happy for you, Shreve! (and for Daisy, too) No name ideas, but I love reading all the suggestions.

  54. Keli
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:56 am

Ooh, I think I might like the Ruby suggestion best.

  55. Frannie
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:05 am

    Blondie or Pepper.

Unless you just want to call her Beauty. She is so beautiful and a very lucky girl to be part of your farmily.

  56. Anitanola
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:06 am

    Latte

  57. Chantel I.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:08 am

Now I totally have baby cow envy… She looks like a Peanut to me, but in case that isn’t terribly feminine, I also like Rosa and the above suggestion of Lucy.

  58. Dunja
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:21 am

She’s so beautiful! I would call her Fairy.

  59. CathyA

Tanith – well, this is interesting – knew someone who had a dog by this name, didn’t know it meant anything:

    Ginger

    Velvet

  60. LEISEL
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:26 am

Looks like a “half-Pint” to me! BEAUTIFUL!!!!!

  61. Shannon S.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:29 am

I think she looks like a Lucy, but then again I’d probably just call her Red. She’s beautiful.

  62. Dana
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:29 am

I agree with many of the others.. she is a Rosie. Glad she is a girl and won’t end up in Charlies tummy!! She is beautiful and looks sooooooo soft and fuzzy!

  63. Kerri
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:31 am

How about May-ze or Maysie because she was born in May? Very sweet!

  64. Dana
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:31 am

Curious, has Frisco met his little sister/half sister? What does he think about her?

  65. Patr
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:33 am

    Mocha

    Caramel

She looks the color of eagle brand milk to be honest. Is her coat soft? It looks it. She is such a sweetie.

  66. Darci
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:37 am

    OMG Name her “Lady”

she looks just like a little lady. Also after the Lady slipper flower.

    Daisy & Lady

it’s such a distinguished name for her.

  67. montanarose
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:37 am

I cast my vote for Lucy. Can you imagine bellowing out “Loooooocy!” Daisy (and whoever the proud papa is) done good with this one.

  68. wright1
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:38 am

Awww, so adorable! As to names, can’t come up with anything that hasn’t been suggested already…

I like the idea of warmth / red; Red, Ruby, Rosie or Lucy would suit her. And be easy hollerin’names ;)

  69. Laura
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:44 am

Oh, she’s a beauty, just like her mother! Congratulations to the whole proud Farmily! And I vote for Lucy, too — not only is it the perfect name for a redhead, but every time you call it you’ll be able to hear Ricky Ricardo’s voice in your head. “Looooooceeeee!”

  70. ALYESKA2
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:46 am

Since her mom is Daisy, I think you should call her RUSTY ROSE! It gives you two choices for a call name. What a BEAUTY!! you must be very proud!

  71. Tasha
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:46 am

What about Flora? It matches with Daisy and it sounds pretty good when hollered.

She sure is gorgeous! I wouldn’t have known that she is a newborn cow from the pictures. She looks so big and strong and wise already.

I can’t wait to see her grow up in pictures.

  72. Andrew
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:49 am

Kanpai = ‘toast’ in Japanese. Two syllables, pronounced pretty much ‘can pie’ as far as I can tell.

Should be easy to shout, and most Japanese words sound nice spoken softly (to my ears)

    Congrats regardless!

  73. Sara
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:54 am

If she was a bit darker, I’d suggest Brownie.
    or Rosie

  74. Assana
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:55 am

Ah, she is gorgeous, and I’m going with all the folks above who recommended Lucy. And, just you know, I went out and screamed “Lucy” to see if it holds well… turns out it was super easy! :)

Congrats Shreve. Please give mama a hug for me.

  75. John Thompson
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:04 am

    Bulah or Evelyn?

  76. Barbara
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:12 am

    Sweetheart

  77. Marian
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:20 am

I’ll say “Titian” because, what cow is named “Titian”? And I like Renaissance artists.

  78. Ketra
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:21 am

How did you and Carol manage to have babies at the same time?! This is a beautiful calf! How is Daisy?

  79. LindaS
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:21 am

    Precious.

  80. Susan
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:26 am

Sadie (almost an anagram of Daisy)
    Ruby
    Coral
    Amber
    Brandy
Echo (fun to call out over and over)
    Ena (Gaelic, “little fiery one”)

    And of course, Lucy.

“Luuuceeeee! You’ve got some splainin to do!”

  81. Cindy
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:34 am

“Half-pint” from above gets my vote.

Before I saw that, my idea was Sweetpea. I think it does suit her.

  82. Mary
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:39 am

So cute! I vote for “Latte”. As in, I hope she gives you “a latte” of milk. ;)

  83. Christy
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:40 am

I’m loving pinky or clover! What a sweetie!

  84. christine
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:41 am

    LOOOOOOOOOOOOOOLAAAAAAAAAAAAAA!

    sounds good to me,

  85. bekka
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:50 am

if you read back, mike made a comment about lady gaga when they did daisy’s preg. test so my vote goes for “lady”

  86. Helen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:51 am

Oh, she is gorgeous. You must be so proud.
    How about Saffron? Saffie!

  87. Bronwyn
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:54 am

Well I thought of Latte when I saw her. :) I realize I’m the third person to mention it after reading through but I like it quite a bit.

  88. Felyne
    May 28th, 2011 @ 11:56 am

Well are you going to keep with the flower name theme? You didn’t with the boy but maybe it’s just a girl thing.

What about Tulip? You could really get the holler up into that one. Tuuuuuuuuuuuuuu-lip :)

It’s the same with naming cats, you need one that you can lovingly dote on them when they’re on your lap because gorgeous, but then is equally powerful when you’re calling them home from the neighbours 5 doors down.

  89. Maranda
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:03 pm

She’s beautiful! Oh my gosh! What a precious color she is. <3 <3 <3
I think Pepper-Anne is a cute name. Or just Pepper for short. Pepper-Anne was the name of a redheaded cartoon character from my childhood. :D

  90. Maggie
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:11 pm

She’s beautiful, congrats! My husband just suggested Snookie or Winnie. I’m bad with names.

  91. Erin
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:29 pm

She is more adorable than I could have imagined!!!

I think Treacle might be a nice name. She does look sweet!

  92. Micaela Morris
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:30 pm

How about Rita? She is just the color of Rita Hayworth’s hair….and it’s easy to yell!

  93. Elle
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:33 pm

Gorgeous little girl. How about Russet or Mocha?

  94. Amelia
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:41 pm

In keeping with Daisy, how ’bout Lily? It’s spring after all…

  95. Tiffany
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:55 pm

Briar or Thistle? Might be difficult when yelling it across a field… My cow that I used to love and lay on and sit with for hours was affectionately called “Galaxy.” I was 13 or 14 at the time though…

  96. Deb A.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 12:57 pm

Silk ~ I think her coloring is closer to that of a chocolate lab with the pale nose and membranes, or maybe a Visla – Hungarian hunting dog that’s redder in color.
A roan horse would have white flecks through it’s coat, to make it look ‘flea-bitten’. More like a Cattle dog or Heeler in color, I think.
I like your question, it got me thinking about the babies color.
I never would have guessed before seeing her!

  97. KT
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:02 pm

Georgette (as in Gorgeous George-ette)! She is a beauty.

  98. KT
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:11 pm

    Hey, it’s me again.

Just read the names — so many wonderful suggestions. Then I saw GINGER. Bingo!

It’s a great hollerin’ name…and she is exactly the color of ginger. And it fits her.

    Congratulations to the whole Farmily.

  99. Karen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:13 pm

Jazz for a redhead, or Helen, because she’s such a beauty.

  100. karyn
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:15 pm

She is really beautiful. I see her as an ‘Abby’ or a ‘Hannah’.

  101. Jen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:25 pm

I second (third, fourth??) the “Rosa/Rosie” name. Congratulations to you and to Daisy!

  102. MJ
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:32 pm

Going with the redhead, I’m thinking of an Irish name: Fiona….meaning fair, beautiful. I think it fits and would work softly or hollered.

  103. Monika
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:34 pm

    peanut!

  104. Anna
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:34 pm

In my family, all redheads are called Lucy… eminently callable.

  105. Yaara
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:39 pm

Is “Berry” too obvious? Short, sweet and hollerable. :)

  106. Candace L
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:41 pm

    Molly

  107. Lynn
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:44 pm

How about “Pippi”? As in Pippi Longstocking! She’s a redhead!
    Or Ginger!

    :)

  108. Evan
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:53 pm

Well, she is adorable. She is the same color of the fresh unfiltered honey I get from my friend’s hives, and you are a honey fan AND she is as sweet as honey…So, I suggest Honey. It hollers well too…HonNEE. Congratulations!

  109. Sharon
    May 28th, 2011 @ 1:56 pm

Camille… Cami for short. Don’t know why, but it popped into my head as soon as I saw her sweet face.

  110. Kerry
    May 28th, 2011 @ 2:14 pm

In horses, that color is red dun. What a peach!

  111. Trina Vaughn
    May 28th, 2011 @ 2:14 pm

Congrats to Daisy on the beautiful baby. And as far as names go how about Rose or Rosie? A flower name like her momma.

  112. Kathie
    May 28th, 2011 @ 2:18 pm

I like caramel too. you can call her carmie for short.

  113. Barbara
    May 28th, 2011 @ 2:34 pm

    Peachy

  114. Catonya Owens
    May 28th, 2011 @ 2:38 pm

OMG – there’s SO many great names here, I won’t even try to add to the mix (wow – it’s going to be hard to make a choice!). Just wanted to say she’s such a beautiful animal Shreve. I just wanna hug her. Looking forward to watching her grow up here on your blog. Thank you for sharing your farmily with us.

Oh Shreve, She’s absolutely gorgeous and her color is marvelous!!! I’ve seen alot of cows in my life and I’ve never seen one quite her color, it reminds me of Mauve….soooo how about calling her: Mau-Vee! :)

  121. Liza Lundell
    May 28th, 2011 @ 3:23 pm

I like Lucy! Congrats to you and Daisy. How’s she doing?

  122. Ava
    May 28th, 2011 @ 3:34 pm

What a beauty. Welcome to the world, little girl. Great job, Daisy, and sincere congrats to the whole farmily!

With her sweet face and warm coloring…

    Clover, as in clover honey.

It’s a sturdy, honest, time-honored cow name. And no bovine ever embodied sweetness like this one, right from the start.

    May 28th, 2011 @ 4:01 pm

    What a beautiful girl!

I have no idea why it popped into my head, but how about Leila?

Leila sounds like it could be easy to holler out across the fields! :)

    May 28th, 2011 @ 4:09 pm

What a beauty! Mazel! A beautiful girl deserves a beautiful name. How about…

    Bella
    Rose
Lily (my little niece Lily has red hair, too!)
    Lila
    Delilah
    Bella
    Ruby

Can’t wait to hear what you name her!

  125. jessica

    Sophia, or just Fia.

    She’s quite beautiful, btw :)

  126. Susie
    May 28th, 2011 @ 4:21 pm

Name her Susie! OR Betty OR Jenny! These are the three generations of women in my family (including me) that have red hair, too.
PS. Congratulations on the beautiful, healthy baby!

  127. Crazy Princess
    May 28th, 2011 @ 4:23 pm

She is gorgeous! And I think you should name her Annie, after that most famous redhead. :)

    Congrats to both of you.

Ella, Mona or moooo na, Wilma

  129. Anne
    May 28th, 2011 @ 4:41 pm

I vote for Lucy also, but still wonder if the reference to Daisy looking like ‘Tilda’ makes that a good choice. She’s a beauty!

Wow – she is a very beautiful heifer calf. I love her already. Congratulations to Daisy and yourself – you must both be so proud!

How about calling her Graycie? She looks so graceful … although she may still be hobbling about a bit.

  134. Ilana

  135. Kazza the Blank One
    May 28th, 2011 @ 5:27 pm

    Omigosh!! She’s adorable!!
What about another flower, like Lily or something, as others have suggested?

  136. Rebekah
    May 28th, 2011 @ 5:30 pm

Scarlet? It goes with red, and it’s easily yelled. Add a T and it’s a Gone With the Wind reference.

For the record, I’m not a Gone With the Wind fan, but I had a classmate named Scarlett who was a lovely girl, and something in your calf’s sweet face reminds me of her.

  137. Kalen
    May 28th, 2011 @ 5:43 pm

I have never been more in love with a picture of a cow in my life. And yes I sometimes tend to fall in love with pictures of cattle. She is so beautiful – she looks edible! But not in a beef sort of way, more of a creamy chocolate mousse, unbearably cute sort of way.

I like Rosie. Rosie and Daisy, different vowels for name-yelling, but they sound good together.

  138. Bruce
    May 28th, 2011 @ 6:33 pm

Daisy’s baby color is definitely “Mink.”
Can you yell “Pashmina” across a pasture?

  139. Another Two-Legger
    May 28th, 2011 @ 6:37 pm

She’s adorable! As soon as I saw her I thought “Rowan” =)

  141. Lizzie L

I would name her after the Nordic goddess of love, Freya.

  145. Joyce

Looks like a Lucy to me, or Rosie.

  146. Janet

Velvet. That’s what came to mind instantly. But she’ll tell you her name – just wait and listen for it.

  147. Janet

    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:05 pm

congratulations to Daisy and you on that gorgeous “little” girl!! What a beautiful color!

Star kind of popped into my head. She has a cute little mark on her nuzzle that sort of radiates out like beams from a star at night. Of course, that has absolutely nothing to do with her gorgeous color….

  149. Steph in Oreogn
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:18 pm

    She sure is pretty.

I didn’t read through the comments so maybe this is not original, but how about Nutmeg?

  150. Janet H.
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:25 pm

Well, as a redhead I’m partial to all other redheads! She looks wise beyond her years–or hours, I should say, I guess! I like Lucy, or Ginger. Sassy is great, too–we had a tortoiseshell cat named Sassafras for the orange in her coat, and we called her Sassy.

  151. Emily
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:31 pm

    BLENDA

My great grandparents from Sweden had a cow named Blenda. Perfect for this one because she’s such a “blend” of colors and features.

  152. Sherry
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:33 pm

Good heavens, a one-day old baby cow is a heck of a lot better lookin’ than most other newborn babies! look how perfect and beautiful she is!!

Rosie would be nice, pink like a rose and still a flower like her mommy.

She is GORGEOUS. I love cows. I’m so jealous you have Daisy and Frisco and Sir Baby and Ricardo (I know he’s a goose but I think he THINKS he’s a cow) and now this new baby too!

  153. Bumblebee
    May 28th, 2011 @ 8:37 pm

Maggie is a cute name!!! She is gorgeous just like her mama!!!! What a little beauty! Awwwww…. I had tears in my eyes when I saw her picture. Thanks for posting so quickly!!! HUGS to all and a kiss on her soft nose for me.

  157. marilyn aka boo
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:23 pm

She looks soooo sweet! I like Ruby best, as a name. It has substance, appropriate for a cow. Or for plant-based names, Ginger or Nutmeg (though you’d probably have to go with Meggie for hollering). I can’t imagine coming up with anything original (after the suggestions above!) that I would like better than these. Congrats! She is just gorgeous.

  158. Gabriella
    May 28th, 2011 @ 9:25 pm

Congratulations! She is a gorgeous girl.

    Lucy!

Lot of cool names so far. Here’s one that I thought of: Roxanne

You can sing it like Sting and/or crank up the stereo. Charlie can yip-yip the back up vocals for you. Chloe can harmonize. Eli will most likely feign total indifference while staring right at you with the “Really?” expression.

So it would go like this: Rooooxanne!! clip-clop clippety-clop moooo…

  164. stacy
    May 28th, 2011 @ 10:31 pm

She’s so pretty and sweet looking. What about Layla? :-)

  165. Nancy

    Butterscotch, dear.

  171. Daedree
    May 29th, 2011 @ 1:45 am

I also think going along with the flower theme might be fun. Some bronze flowers include irises, dahlias, and poppies. Poppy is rather cute, I believe. Buttercup would seem appropriate but hard to yell.

  172. Amaranthus

    Kiss

  173. Amaranthus

    May 29th, 2011 @ 6:07 am

She is so beautiful..you must be so proud, and Daisy, you do good work….I think it will tough for you to pick a name, they all seem so good..I like Cassie, or Lily, Angel..I am sure she will like whatever she is named..Congrats..and the farmily grows once more…..

  179. Terry
    May 29th, 2011 @ 6:12 am

She’s a Rosie for sure, but Ruby would be okay too. Take time to smell the Rosie!

I like Audrey for her name. Would sound good yelled across a field too.

    Maizy

  184. Marg
    May 29th, 2011 @ 8:03 am

Wow! I’m so glad she’s not grey as I previously (but not seriously guessed). She looks so calm I might offer Karma as a name but my favorite one for things I love these days is Elly.

You were with her when she was born, what was in your heart when you saw her. That’s where the name of something so precious should come from.

  185. Andrea
    May 29th, 2011 @ 8:09 am

Oh gosh she’s gorgeous! I say Rose. :) It’s simple with a nod to her mom by staying in the flower family.

  186. Donna

Lucy? (as in Lucille Ball, a great redhead)

if staying in the flower family- TULIP

  191. Jenny C
    May 29th, 2011 @ 9:48 am

Congrats! She’s absolutely gorgeous! This is an exquisite photo, Shreve. How you captured that expression on her face, I have no idea, but everything about the picture is perfect. She has some of Charlie’s coloring, I think. Awesome.

I’d like to come up with the perfect name for her color and that precious “daisy” in the center of her forehead, but the name that smacked me upside the face when I first saw the photo was Sweetie-Pie. So… I’m worthless on this one. She’s Sweetie-Pie to me. :) Actually, now that I think about it, I’d kinda’ like to hear a rough-and-tumble cowboy holler “Sweetie-Pie” across a pasture. I’d pay good money to see and hear that. Hehe.

Haven’t had time to read all these great posts, but I did glance at a few, and FWIW, I think Lily, Rosie and Sweet Pea are lovely.

  192. Michelle
    May 29th, 2011 @ 9:52 am

She is lovely! I vote for “Lovie”, as in the wife on Gilligans Island. ;-) Whatever you name her she is perfect.

  193. Janet M
    May 29th, 2011 @ 10:00 am

Penny, short for Penelope. (my black dog is named Penny, and she is so sweet.)

  194. Miranda
    May 29th, 2011 @ 10:08 am

I’m voting or in support of either Ginger or Lucy. With an E sound at the end, not sure if Daisy/Lucy would sound confusing hollered across a field but Ginger should come across clear.

  195. Joyce
    May 29th, 2011 @ 11:00 am

How about Esmée, and also another vote for Ginger and Lulu.

  196. Campy13

What a beauty! How about Ginger for her name?

  197. mlaiuppa

Redhead? Then it has to e:

    LUCY!

She has her Momma’s nose and her Daddy’s eyes.

What a stunner she is going to be.

Are you keeping her for more milk?

  202. Cristina
    May 29th, 2011 @ 1:35 pm

She is beautiful! When I saw her I thought of brown sugar, molasses, and then I thought, Molly would be a good name for her, and it meets the criteria.

  203. linda
    May 29th, 2011 @ 1:36 pm

How about Penny, she’s as pretty as a new copper penny, a very old saying in the South.

  204. jacqui pomeranski
    May 29th, 2011 @ 1:53 pm

immediately i liked lucy, just for the joy of standing in a field and yelling Heeey luuuuuuuuuuucy! i’m home!
    but then, pippi…
    or rose/rosa
    or poppy…
    those were my faves…
but i always think names take a few days…
the cows around here (cooperstown ny) are all happily having babies and munching on the rapidly growing foliage… (bumper crop of dandilions this year!) and avoiding the bad weather that keeps cropping up…
i haven’t heard our local coyotes yet, tho…
have you ever thought of adding a couple of goats to your farmily? the cheese is great and easy to make, and goat’s milk soap is great for the skin…

  205. Laura M

She looks like a Bella to me!

  206. annbb
    May 29th, 2011 @ 2:19 pm

What an adorable face! You and Miss Daisy must be over the top!

BRYNN-LEE!!! A perfect name for hollering across the field, or across the pond, in my case. My youngest’s name is Brynn Lee (or Brynnly as we all call her), and though there have been many many times when her name was spoken in a normal voice, when the time came to be called home, her name just sorta rolls out BIG! Plus, both my girl and Daisy’s girl are beauties!

  207. Alexandra
    May 29th, 2011 @ 2:27 pm

    What a beautiful girl! Congratulations.

    My vote goes for Molly.

But, if she were mine I’d nickname her Plushberry, because she’s just such a plushy juicy little strawberry.

    Dear Shreve,

Congratulations on your new healthy bouncing baby grandcow! (Or would that be cousin? :) So many wonderful, thoughtful names. I’ll throw in Mica and Maybelle. Skål!

  210. Siobhan
    May 29th, 2011 @ 4:39 pm

I cast my vote for Lucy. Though I do think you should consult Daisy — she’s HER baby, after all. See what she thinks of several names and she’ll let you know which one she likes.

  211. JoDi
    May 29th, 2011 @ 4:49 pm

Congrats on the gorgeous new baby! She really is beautiful.

Too many comments to read them all. I’m sure these have been suggested already, but the first names that came to mind were

    Latte
    Mocha

  212. Angie
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:22 pm

    Annie!!

  213. Corrie
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:27 pm

She looks like a “Maisy” to me, like a combo of Mocha and Daisy. That way if they’re both in the same pasture and you want them to come in, you can call “Daisy” or “Maisy” and they’ll both come in!

CONGRATS, she is beyond sweet adorable cute!

  214. CathyA
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:32 pm

    #28 Kate

Ha ha! Who doesn’t want to go outside and yell
    STELLLLLLLLLLLLLLLAAAAAAAA!

  215. Susan
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:44 pm

“LOVEY” like Thurston Howell’s wife on Gilligan’s Island….she looks ready to be spoiled. :)

    Although, I also like Kate’s ” STELLA”.

  216. JennyLu
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:46 pm

    Lucy!

  217. Kim
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:46 pm

I like the Lucy suggestion or if you want to stay in the flower theme how about Violet, Lily or Clover? I’m partial to the name Cricket but that might be hard to holler and sound harsh when yelled.

Congrats on the new edition – she truly is beautiful.

  218. Bumblebee
    May 29th, 2011 @ 5:54 pm

Ivy, Ruthie, Emilie, Maybelle, Natalie, Naomi…
Still love Maggie…she looks just like a Maggie! LOL Or Aubrey is lovely too. :) Have fun trying to find the most special name for this precious little package. :) HUGS
For some reason while I was at work yesterday, before I saw the new baby, the name “Maggie” just popped into my head, out of the blue! I have no clue why??

  219. Claire
    May 29th, 2011 @ 6:17 pm

After reading all of these comments so far, I do like Lucy the best but I wonder if it sounds too similar to Daisy? So I suggest a country redhead instead: Reba. She is a country girl after all!

For some reason, the minute i thought of a name for her it was “Lina”. Plus, how fun would that be to holler out across a field?! Anyway, what a beautiful creature :) Glad all is well!

Nevermind, i just saw the “Reba” suggestion. Although, i guess you might want to save that one until you see a bit more of her lil’ personality shine through ;) Is she sweet or tough?

Congratulations on such a beautiful baby!
The farmily is expanding (happy sigh)!

These have been offered already, but here are my choices:
    Ruby (my mom’s name)
    Rowan
    Tawny

I could just kiss that forehead and can
imagine how sweet she must smell.

    ‘plink, plink ‘
by gosh those eyelashes are just ADORABLE.

I love Lucy, Hazel and Maybelle ! Rose could be nice too as a flower name to match with her beautiful mum. They are really lovely :)

Someone mentioned Clover, I’ll second that one because I’m not liking any of the choices based on her coloring. Personally, I say give it time to learn her personality and within a few days, a name will fall from the sky and be a perfect fit.

    Hi Shreve,
The new baby is absolutely adorable! I would say she is a mix between a fawn/rusty colour.

Having said that, the first name that came to mind for me was “Bambi”. My daughter is currently in love with that movie right now!

You could also go with Lily (since Daisy is named after a flower). I noticed above there was Lucy suggested-that’s also a sweet name.

    Best of luck & congrats!

She’s a real beauty! Of course you’ll name her what ever you found to be suitable However this name struck me. This is what I see in this photo like the way I percieve Daisy as a sort of “Gaia.”

    Beivve or:

Beivve, Beiwe, Bievve, Beaivi or Biejje, is the name of the Sun as well as the Sun-deity to the Sami people.

By the way, not to misuse this space but I LOVED your cat story. Just had to tell you. So glad you kept the clan between you and Mike. A feral cat adopted me last June. The vet said how to tell is by the thickness of their skin. He’s the best cat ever, so grateful and sweet. Very different from the cat that aggressively chased my two cat girls. He was crazed when I caught him (was going to release him after making sure he was ok, and neuter him). I have five, two black and white girls, then Bob the one who WAS feral and is the light of my heart, then two that I had to save from the pound when they were going to kill them because they were sniffling. They recovered fast with warmth, love and no medication. I can’t work there anymore- lasted a month (added 2 cats). By the time I found them a home, they had a big home in my heart and had to keep them. A cat clan nurishes the soul. I love each of them so much.

I like either Rosie or Ruby and they both have those hard vowel sounds that can carry when called across the wind.

    Brie

  251. Kathryn

For shouting, I think Emma is a pretty good name, and the vowel sounds aren’t like her mother’s, so you’d avoid confusion.

she looks like a Jenny to me. Pretty Jenny.

  253. Nancy

isn’t it funny to see how many of us love to come up with a name?
Here’s my tope 3 girl names:
    1. ruby
    2. trudy
    3. lucy

all 2 syllables, so easily said/yelled. I too thought of that same necessity when coming up with my all-time fav 3 girl names!

I’d probably go with Ruby, for red.

  256. Lucky
    May 30th, 2011 @ 6:46 pm

she is a Bonnie fine lass

    bon·ny also bon·nie (bn)
    adj. bon·ni·er, bon·ni·est Scots
    1. Physically attractive or appealing; pretty.
    2. Excellent.

Violet is a fave of mine, already suggested-and you can shout it out in two syllables :)

  260. Laurie
    May 30th, 2011 @ 9:30 pm

I liked Terra, Trixie, Ruby, and Rosa…but I have to say I looked at her again and she’s a Maysie, without a doubt!

  261. Liana

    Spicy? India? Nutmeg?

Something warm. She’s a little beauty!

My first thought was Lucy, but then I saw someone suggested Cara, which is an irish baseh name for beloved.
I take care of a two-year-old girl named Cara and can attest to the great hollerability of this name.
Also, “Cara Bella” means beautiful face in Spanish when pronounced Spanishly, and Cara Bella is very cowish when pronounced more Americanly.

  265. Joy

Hows about, PRECIOUS as you so treasure her mother. Isn’t she your first ‘girl’? She is a beautiful color, which you and friends have richly described.

    Tulip!

  269. Eija
    May 31st, 2011 @ 9:07 am

She is a beauty!! Her coloring is close to that of caffe latte or sand.
    So….LATTE or SANDY
If we were in Finland, I would suggest ‘Mansikki’ (=strawberry in Finnish), which is actually a very common name used for cows and she looks like one: delicious and red.

  270. C...
    May 31st, 2011 @ 9:07 am

    How about Brenda?

  271. Karen
    May 31st, 2011 @ 9:15 am

Her color makes me think Cocoa. A creamy cocoa with melted marshmallows mixed in!

However, those sweet, dark eyes keep making me think of Black-Eyed Susans. Maybe Susan? Not sure how well the “-an” part would come out in a shout, though.

Or Marigold? I believe both those and Black-Eyed Susans have varieties native to Wyoming.

    Piper :)

  273. Robin Nowak
    May 31st, 2011 @ 9:41 am

I am entirely biased, but ‘Robin’ is a wonderful name. Being a strawberry blonde, I have come to love all beings with the same color hair/fur. And, I know from firsthand experience that it can be hollered and heard far far away.

    ;)

  274. Liz Berry

  275. Carolyn

    How about “Rosie”?

  283. Barbara Cannas
    May 31st, 2011 @ 2:54 pm

I like ginger and nutmeg and maybe brownie? But since her mom is Daisey, maybe not another 2 syllable name ending in ie or ey…?

    Beautiful baby!

Hi!! Greetings from your ‘neighbor state’ – Colorado! Am in the process of reading your book Daily Coyote and lovin’ it !! What a beautiful, magical story! Thanks for all the ‘education’ you’re putting out there! Daisy’s calf is a ‘honey’ ! … Maybe ‘Honey-Bee’ for a name?? (Bee makes a good strong word for ‘calling in’ !! : ) (probably has already been suggested … didn’t read all the comments ! Thanks again for sharing your ‘life’!

With that hair gotta go with Thelma or Louise, though Louise isn’t really shout-able, so I vote for Thelma (let’s just forget about how the movie ends)

It’s not a name suggestion, but couldn’t help myself & regressed to my childhood when I saw the picture, “Awww, baby moo!” (Think of a 3yr old pointing)

  293. Nancy Gibson
    June 1st, 2011 @ 8:12 am

She is such a pretty, unusual color. My dad raised cattle, so I know what you mean about being able to call them in across the pasture.

How about Butter? Short for Butterscotch? In Alabama we would call her across the pasture pronounced ‘Buda!’ (Bud-ah) and refer to her otherwise more drawn out…’Budddddddda’. Replacing the t’s for d’s completely. :)

  294. SuburbanPrairie
    June 2nd, 2011 @ 3:13 pm

Others have suggested it, and I’d like to place my vote for “Lucy,” to honor the great and beautiful redhead Lucille Ball. Also, it was my dog’s name, which makes it a wonderful name for a sweet girl! :-)

    Congratulations, Daisy!
