I’ve alluded to big summer plans and it’s time to share details!
I’m spending the summer on the mountain, camping at 7500 feet.
And the entire Farmily is coming with me!
Last week, I shared photos of the spring pasture Mike and I lease for the cows. We lease another 1000 acres of private mountain land for the cows’ summer pasture. This land happens to rest smack in the middle of 10,000 private acres, grazing land for a handful of ranchers. Being there is like living in a dream, living like a nymph. I’m moving up this week, and will be there through September.
I actually thought I’d be up there by now ~ usually the snow has melted by the end of May and we trail the cows up the third week of June. But since it was still snowing in June, it wasn’t until last week that we could even drive in! There are still scattered snowdrifts, but that didn’t keep me from diving into a mountain pond after spending the day working in the sun :)
I’ve rigged up a hillbilly solar setup to keep my laptop and camera batteries charged and, while I will be offline 99% of the time for the next three months, I will continue to post here multiple times a week, and the daily photos for the Daily Coyote and the email subscription list will continue uninterrupted.

wow… Amazing!!!! So many questions come to mind!All the farmily??? how will Charlie be there without the fenced area you have? Is Mike moving there too?..It seems like a dream to be there like that..with a pond…and solitude..I just can’t wait to hear all of it.will be checking in daily…that is one of my fantasies I have always had to go off somewhere remote like that for a while..just amazing!!! Shreve, it sounds like your new adventure will be magical.
I really need to thank you for sharing with us. Following your life means a lot to me; a reminder that there is a different life waiting when I am ready to leave mine. I found your blog when I lived outside L.A. – since last fall my man and I have vagabonded back to Europe (visa issues, we’re German/Austrian) and moved to London 10 days ago. Here I am, in our rented apartment dubbed the “spacepod”, loaded with stupid gadgetry, skyline views, never-ending Heathrow flight noise and all. And I would swap this buzzing city in a second for the rugged quiet wilderness, and the connection to nature and your animals – if it weren’t for this man I love. Thank you for your pictures and your words, because they keep me questioning my choices, again and again.

Good for you, Shreve. I am curious. You said your family is going with you. Canines, felines, cows ???? Richardo? And will Mike be with you? The whole set up sounds wonderful, fun, adventurous and a bit primitive. I’ve never camped out for that long. Actually never had the time (real life and all). Anxious to read your happenings and the hillbilly solar.

It is so comforting to know that places like this still exist. Here I live on the edge of a once small town that is slowly creeping outwards, and all the pretty nooks and crannies of wilderness are being replaced by gas stations and Walmarts. Your blog is a salve for my cynical soul who fears that her children will never know what true wilderness and beauty of nature is. Thank you Shreve.

Have you got your cast iron dutch oven for campfire cooking? I understand corn muffins are awesome that way.
I’m sure Eli and the cats will be fine. They’ll probably stick around the house.
You’re taking Daisy, Ricardo, Fiona and Frisco, Chloe and…Charlie? You’re taking Charlie? Will it be safe out there in the wide open?
Solar hooked up to batteries or charger?
I imagine refrigeration will be the nearest mountain stream. If I recall from my camping days the streams consist of ice melt and snow runoff and are always cold. But you go ahead and skinny dip all you want. In fact, I’m sure up in the mountains with no one around, you can go commando and turn it into a little nudist camp. Hope there are no nettles nearby.

Yay Shreve, I am bursting with excitement and joy for you! What an amazing adventure.
I been off the grid for the last 6 years, but in a cabin. We have running water (gravity fed) but (this summer) no hot water. Doesn’t bother me.
This is my last month here, but next summer I will be back living in a Canvas Cabin with no running water, composting toilet, and solar shower (right in the pasture with my horses!) The wilder the better for some of us.
So, I will be curious to hear about your refrigeration set-up and which solar panel you chose for your laptop.
Look forward to many updates.
p.s. we’re waiting for that next book…??

Oh, WOW, Shreve!!!!!!! What an awesome undertaking. And what an awesome landscape. Thanks so much for sharing all this with us, your cyber family. Enjoy….commune with nature and the ways of the world, from your own kingdom…. Myself I spent 2 1/2 years ditch-banking in the desert south west (30 miles north of Yuma, AZ) on the Colorado river. Solar Panels, filtering river water, even solar cooking (homemade solar oven)….after 30+ years working in the Areospace field…the peace / solitude of the area was a true blessing. Will be looking forward to your reports (mussings)
