Milk Teeth
☆ September 30, 2011
Bovines lose their baby teeth when they’re 1½ years old.
I did not know this before today.
And so I nearly had a heart attack this morning when,
while scratching Frisco’s chin,
I saw his two front teeth were missing!
This would explain why he’s been trying to nurse on Daisy for the past week.
I thought he needed therapy.
The front two teeth are the primary grass nippers ~
I think he’s been feeling rather hungry (though he’s not lost any weight)
and was looking for an easy liquid meal.
The tooth fairy will bring extra hay tonight!

I love this picture! Obviously, the cows are part of your farmily. Do you plan to eat them, sell them?

goodness, what a handsome fella Frisco is. I love the regal look of his posture, beautiful horns, intelligence showing. And who knew about the teeth – I would have been shocked too – I guess now surprise – puppies lose their teeth, I guess cats do to though I didn’t notice mine (maybe they don’t – anyone know??).
Love the picture as always – so full of love and energy and peace – have a great weekend!

He must smell delicious. After bathing my horses, I would always burrow my nose in their warm coats.

This is one of the most beautiful pictures I’ve ever seen. I never knew how fabulous cows were until I started reading this blog. Now I want one. I hope he’ll like living in Hollywood!

@Suzy Right on! I have developed a greater appreciation for bovines since reading this stuff.
And Bull fights really make me sad.

October 1st, 2011 @ 11:59 am
Yeah, Janet, really. I just stumbled upon this site and have not had time to read what it’s all about. Do you have to be rude to me? Really?
October 1st, 2011 @ 1:02 pm
Rick… Janet. Say you’re sorry and let’s not spoil a beautiful Saturday with your bickering.
October 1st, 2011 @ 1:04 pm

Love this photo, Shreve.

Well, learn something every day.
Poor Frisco steer! (Poor Daisy, come to think of it, with that big lug nuzzling her teats!)LOL.

re/ cow scent ~ it’s good. I wrote about it here:
http://honeyrockdawn.com/2010/05/five-reasons-to-have-a-cow/
RR ~ the bovines showcased on this blog are pets ~ they have jobs, such as breeding cows (Sir Baby), supplying milk (Daisy), and being adorable (Frisco), but they are family and won’t be sold or eaten. We do run black angus cows and raise beef; those animals are treated with enormous amounts of love and respect as well, though some of them are sold and some end up in our freezer.
October 1st, 2011 @ 3:32 pm
Shreve, remember that picture of the cow with Frisco giving you the eye??? Where is SHE now huh, huh, lol.
October 1st, 2011 @ 5:28 pm
I have no problem eating beef if the cow is treated with respect, no fooling with mother nature and no feed lots. I think that is true of almost everything I eat, if the animal is treated well and has lived a good life, free range etc. I feel just a little bit better. Although I do try to eat nothing with a face!

Such delightful contrasts! He’s regal, precious, magnificent, sweet, a dear and gorgeous big brute who simply exudes power, and you somehow captured it in one glorious photograph. I almost can’t bear it it’s so exquisite. I’ll come back to this one often and discover something newly wonderful every time.
Had a good giggle at the thought of him trying to nurse on Daisy – I mean, she’d be high-centered w/him under there, right? :)
Welcome, Rick Roberts. You’re in for a treat as you catch up on this site and the original site, dailycoyote.net. Some of us are a bit protective of Shreve and her farmily – we’ve fallen in love with them, and it’s the best we can do from afar. Like I’ve posted before, it drives me nuts that I can’t poke thru this freakin’ computer screen and pet that beloved bull’s big ol’ piny head and hug Shreve for sharing the epic adventure of her life with us.
October 2nd, 2011 @ 12:00 am
Whoa! After seeing how Rick was treated, will not be hanging around!
October 2nd, 2011 @ 9:47 am
Jenny ~ “high centered”…..CRACKING UP!!
October 2nd, 2011 @ 10:22 am
Dawn, don’t be so quick to judge. He was welcomed after all. You don’t want to miss all the good things to come.
October 2nd, 2011 @ 11:57 am
Shreve, my husband wants to know if perhaps he had been playing hocky when he lost his teeth~LOL
October 2nd, 2011 @ 1:24 pm
Nothing like good bovine and/or equine neck sugar!!
October 2nd, 2011 @ 3:52 pm
You two are so cute!
October 2nd, 2011 @ 7:20 pm
GREAT photo! By the way, this happened to our buffalo too. His nursing attempts were not limited to one animal, he tried EVERY-body. LOL
October 2nd, 2011 @ 9:18 pm
Jenny C… well said! Shreve give him an extra nuzzle from me :D
October 3rd, 2011 @ 5:03 am
Beautiful, beautiful animal, he is just gorgeous.
October 3rd, 2011 @ 6:58 am
What a beautiful boy. He is absolutely perfect! I want to hug him!
October 3rd, 2011 @ 8:11 am
Frisco is incredibly handsome!
October 3rd, 2011 @ 9:50 am
I think it’s universal: I have never wanted to hug a cow so much in my life :)
October 3rd, 2011 @ 10:18 am
I am interested in knowing the secrets one whispers into the ears of such a big boy.
October 3rd, 2011 @ 12:18 pm
Love that pic, and I bet he smells so wild. I’m reading The Daily Coyote and I’m enjoying it greatly.
October 3rd, 2011 @ 2:07 pm
I was wondering when we’d see a picture of a bull kiss. I know *I* couldn’t resist kissing that big lug if he lived with me. As for his nursing Daisy — we had a tommy cat who used to try to nurse on his mama long, long after it was embarrassing for everyone. She sighed (no, she did!) and gently pushed him away. On rare occasions she’d allow it for a few minutes. She WAS still his mommy. I would assume that Daisy reacted similarly. But that would have been a stitch to see! LOL
October 4th, 2011 @ 9:47 am
as much as i love charlie, i am even more in love with your cows. that is so funny, now that you know why he suddenly started nursing. smart boy.
October 4th, 2011 @ 11:21 am
I used to be able to make that separation of sentient living beings & food. For the past 30 yrs I have not been able to. It’s been plant-based food ever since.
October 4th, 2011 @ 8:23 pm
This is the cutest bull I’ve ever seen!
October 5th, 2011 @ 7:48 am
Poor guy. He’s been misunderstood! I hope he gets a good dinner today
October 10th, 2011 @ 9:50 am
My first thoughts…How his smell must be very comforting, and how soft his fur on his neck must feel on your face.
AND how much closer could you get for a “full” hug!
What a beautiful big boy…..just too gorgeous for words!
October 11th, 2011 @ 3:25 pm
I’ve never seen such a beauty and a beast. I am so in awe of you and the life you live. I do want to mention I agree with Pam and am in hopes you might think about doing a coffee table book of photos of your life with the farmly.
