Sexy Beast

☆ December 23, 2011

4x5 box

Every day is like Christmas when I open this box.

4x5 tripod with mushy

I included myself {and Mushy!} in this picture as a size reference, to show how huge this equipment is, but it didn’t work – it just makes me look short.
In reality, I’m 5’9″ and this stuff is as big as I am.

4x5 ground glass

Behold, the 4×5.
I’ll share more about this awesome camera in later posts.

4x5 kiss

True love.

That’s old school. I had a job in the 90’s and got to work in a dark room for 7 years. That was fun. Would you have to scan your prints to show them on here?

I’m not yet camera savvy so I cannot fully appreciate ‘sexy beast’, but I am very envious of your bright sunshine and blue sky.
Not too sure about the temperature. I know it’s a package deal!

    @David

“How can it be better than aa digital camera?”

A 4X5 camera is generally rated at 200 Megapixels, in contrast to your 4? 8? 12? megapixel digital camera. In addition, the dynamic range of film – “CCDs and the related capture electronics will need about ten times more dynamic range (three stops) than they have today to be able to simulate film’s shoulder….This is the biggest image defect in digital cameras today.”. So when you have a a 2 gigapixel digital camera… ask again.

The above is, of course, approximate, but in any case, unless you work for some exotic government agency – you have no way of displaying the difference.

Nice! We have an old 4×5 press camera that my father-in-law gave us – he used to use it in the field for taking photos of rocks (he’s a geologist, it’s not as dull as it sounds :P) It’s a little beat up, but it still takes beautiful shots, once we figured out how to use it, and how to use sheet film – I never had the opportunity to go beyond 120 film in school. We’ve got Ilford FP4 in the fridge right now. Can’t wait to read more about yours! Yours is typically more for studio work, no? Since it’s such a pain to lug around?

Somebody is having a white Christmas and I’m glad it’s not me. Well we do have some snow but it’s mostly ice now after a big chinook. Merry Christmas everyone.

well it is important that mushy is there to supervise all the goings on. omg that looks like a portable xray machine or sumthin, that’s a gnarly set up for sure. and yeah you are a sexy beast. oh that, sorry. baaa haaaa !

Ah, the reliable 4×5. The large format cameras… nothing can quite equal them. The solid thunk as the film slide seats. The authoritative snap of the iris. The wonderful metal clicks and ticks as you settle it for a shot. The substantial heft. I had a Graflex Press camera for many years; spent many happy hours in the dark room, reeking of hypo and hot, drying prints on the drying drum. Congratulations on owning such a beauty!

Wow, looks awesome..I think I can understand your love for photography. I love to take pictures, but your quite a few light years ahead of me in that department. My little camera still uses film, and trying to find a Black’s to get it developed….well, that’s another story. People laugh at me because I have not gone digital yet. But, that is coming.
Merry Christmas Shreve to you and Mike, and all of your farmily..A special kiss on the nose for Charlie, (whom I just love).

Awesome post. That camera(!), You(!), Mushy(!), the snow, the sky… all so beautiful. Mushy is cuuute as she keeps you company. Talk about size reference and perspective – she looks like a little owl back there. Ha.

Merry, merry Christmas to all of you darlings: you, Mike & his farmily, Charlie, Eli, Chloe, Ranger, Daisy, Sir Baby, Flicka, Frisco, Rue, Mushy, Kettle and Fiona.

Oh, Shreve, the shot of you giving it a kiss will keep me happy for days. I’m very happy for you that you have it, and I’m sure you know just how to use it. Can’t wait to see the results! Do you already have a darkroom?

Mushy sitting in the snow watching you is just great: how many cats will wander off in the snow with their humans just to watch what’s going on, and especially to sit on that cold wet stuff!! Another example of the ways your farmily are each individuals, true to their full characters (when so many domestic animals are limited by their circumstances to a smaller range of behavior due to having to conform to certain expectations.) You don’t require anything from them, hence they can be who they are.

Please share camera results soon! And the best of the turning of the year to you and yours.

aahhh, it’s so satisfying to have the perfect camera, saw, kiln, brushes, or whatever tool it takes, to do your thing! all tool freaks understand the feeling.
Happy Everything to you and everyone there.

Merry Christmas to you and your farmily and the best for the new year.

OOOOOOh all that lovely snow. I don’t suppose you could send some of it my way?? Not too much, just a couple of inches for Christmas.

Perhaps the first picture should be of Mushy. she appears to be sitting there quite patiently while you set things up.

Are you using sheet film with that 4×5? We have one, from Fred Picker’s Zone 6, made out of walnut – a thing of beauty with a Schneider lens.

During my law enforcement days, my crime scene photography mentor raved about his 4×5 and how well it captured detail. But it still takes the eye of the photographer to select the details. You, my dear, have that eye.
May your Christmas be peaceful and filled with friends ( 2 legged and 4). Merry Christmas, Shrreve.

Geez. How can you haul that box around without wheels. Or…a sled?

Sorry but it still looks huge.

I’ll assume it uses print film (probably black and white) and you develop it yourself?

    That is one serious camera.

Gud Yule to all. Hope you day was special.

We have a vintage 5X7 Corona View view camera and gear that made a living for the people who owned it through the depression. I would be a great great granddaddy to your ‘sexy beast’. Love your photos. Happy New Year to you, Mike and the whole Farmily.

do u really think u deserved my bloody money more than me? Oh yeah, you are the smart businessman, and i am just an idiot student, so you certainly do. i would be more than happy to fully cover poor pakistani’s (or any other nation) soul up to $4/pp (cutting, pasting, synonyms, antonyms => honest writing industry charges), but since my complain is on no writer will be paid anyway…. i actually can not even proceed with my return request because i want a full refund and only second option offering 40% is active. moreover i am not planning to supply your database with my intellectual property once is ready. and lastly i would die of embarrassment if my own essay given to you would sabotage my own essay given to professor showing plagiarism. Is there any third solution offered as an atonement? looking forward to hear from you, it would be great to have a business conversation, since your reps are not able to exceed their competencies.

    sincerely yours
