News From The Homefront

☆ May 2, 2012

Hi All ~ Many readers have forwarded me this recent article regarding Wildlife Services. Thank you! It’s a great article. Those of you who’ve read The Daily Coyote know that Mike has worked for Wildlife Services, however, two months ago, Mike made the decision to end his career with Wildlife Services. While he still believes in protecting livestock, he could no longer support Wildlife Service’s current methods and practices which result in nothing more than the mass genocide of coyotes.

Kudos to Mike for standing behind his beliefs.

A very intriguing article, it’s interesting to see the thoughts from someone from the agency and the biologists.

“It’s better to stand alone with the truth, than to be wrong with a multitude.”

I agree with Sandy, good for Mike for standing up in what he believes.

I also read this 3 part story in our local California paper, and thought of you, Mike and Charlie. I couldn’t look at some of the picture’s that accompanied our story, it was to gruesome.I agree with the need to ‘manage’ the wild, when it’s mixed with the ‘domestic’ but WOW!! I always thought it was a LOT more humane than what I read and saw…Wishing you all the best, Karen

Sorry but “manage the wild” that makes no sense to me, we invaded the wild first not the other way around.

SO glad and relieved Mike is no longer a part of that outfit. It makes me sad to think your precious canine would have been one of the unfortunates if Mike, in that brief moment, had not snatched him up. Charlie, you are one lucky guy!

I wondered how Mike could keep doing his job after getting to know Charlie. It is so sad what is being done to coyotes. Charlie is one lucky coyote. I wish every coyote pup was as lucky. Maybe instead of killing the pups they should let people adopt them. If adopted as pups I think they are tame like dogs. I would bring a coyote pup into my family of dogs and cats. I have a friend that raised a fox and she has had him 10 years with no problems. She also has a opposum and raccoon that she raised from babies.

Good for Mike. He’s a caring person. Balancing wildlife with domestic can be a struggle. But why does man feel like he can dictate how mother nature should be by controlling wildlife, cutting forests, etc. I’ll stop rambling.

i thought ranchers could only kill predators caught in the act, but i guess they can get governments to kill them all. caught in the act of being a coyote or a wolf? has a hollow ring to it. thumbs up mikey.

be glad your next gig might have been on bunny patrol (because they will nibble on your garden and there are no more coyotes to keep the population down) or on antelope patrol because ‘they just keep staring at me’ or on sage chicken patrol because we just cannot condone that mating dance.

I had also read the article and thought of what you had written about Mike and his involvement with the “Wildlife Service”. (oxymoron?)
It is a relief to read that he has stopped his work for them. I hope there are not too many repercussions for him because of his brave decision.

Way to go MC! Putting principals before the job,you are a inspiration for us all. I have had Red Foxes on the property for many years they have 3 dens and every year have a litter of young. My neighbors and I encourage this as they help keep the Deer Mice population down so there is less chance of getting Lyme disease. They are also fun to watch. This year 4 little fellows.

Here’s an interesting article about an alternative livestock protection strategy that appears to be working in Marin County, CA. It involves use of Great Pyrenees dogs.

I’m sitting here wondering, if the author of the newspaper articles on Wildlife Services could interview Shreve and Mike, what a wonderful, enlightening publication that could be.

It’s easy to go with the flow, much harder to stand on one’s principles. I respect Mike’s decision, way to go!

I read a good article (here: http://www.sfgate.com/cgi-bin/article.cgi?f=/c/a/2012/04/27/MN7D1O7RA4.DTL) on the use of livestock guarding dogs as a better alternative to traps and poison. I know it’s not a fix-all, but it seems to be a much saner approach than trying to remove all predators from the environment.

I commend Mike for standing to his principles. I’m sure there was some monetary loss due to his decision. But that couldn’t make up for a clean conscience and a good night’s sleep.

I so hope no helicopters fly over your place and mistake Charley for a wild target.

If I were Dictator of the Universe for Life I think one of my first actions would be to dissolve the Dept. of Wildlife Management and forbid aerial and snare hunting and poisons. Let nature balance itself.

They have found that the real threat to bighorn sheep is the lack of certain minerals (selenium?) in the area, caused by our own contamination and mistreatment of natural resources, not by the predators. We need the predators to keep all things balanced. Leave it to the humans to screw up the balance.

I always wanted to ask you about this, Shreve,
that having Charley and both of you loving him,
how can Mike continue to do what he does, so,
Congratulations to Mike, wild animals were
here first, too bad we can’t learn to live
with them instead of killing them….

I agree with Sandy. They were here first and there was a set line of predators and prey already in place, then man came along and disrupted it. Thank you to Mike for standing up for his beliefs and doing what’s right.

So good to hear that Mike has stopped working for them. I was just telling a lady at my local library about you and charlie and I wondered how he could continue after getting to know charlie. So here’s to you Mike, you have made an intelligent decision.

The loans given differ as outlined by necessities but could go of up to $1,400.
This is the reason the principle things a cash loan enterprise will
check together with you before agreeing to present you with financing will be the employment status,
how much you cash in on along with your banking account details.
