Password Protected

☆ November 8, 2012

How’s NaNoWriMo going? Part of the fun and challenge of this month is checking in with each other to help keep things rolling along. But I have a feeling you’re going strong on your own. You’ve already learned how to be self-disciplined and focused in your writing. But do you have any tips you can share? Things that work for you?

This is uber dorky but also super helpful (for me) ~ whenever I have something major going on, something that’s a bit nerve-wracking, I change my passwords to affirmations that apply to whatever it is I’m doing. So, every time I log in to X, Y, or Z, I have to type this concise but apropos affirmation, which means I’m saying it in my head, and it actually works.

{for internet safety, don’t use the same password for everything. use an affirmation for the thing you log into the most, or use a different affirmation for each program/app/etc}

Very cool, Shreve. I’m glad for the reminder of how powerful positive affirmations can be. I’m going to follow suit and do the same thing.

Hi Shreve, I did the same thing when I started my new job – my password is an affirmation, too!

Sometimes it’s the little things that are the most powerful.

One company I worked for years ago had a wooden sign on the wall with the letters “LIDGTTFTATIM”
burned into it. The sign was behind the counter where customers looked directly at it as we waited on them. Of course we answered the obvious question a thousand times a week. “Lord I Do Give Thee Thanks For The Abundance That Is Mine.” All these years later I still remember this little prayer!
A restaurant I ate at once in San Francisco named all of their menu items “I am worthy, I am beautiful…capable…etc.. The wait staff would stand there not acknowledging your order unless you used the proper affirmation name. It was interesting how just ordering there kind of made me squirm uncomfortably. Saying the humble little prayer over and over never gave me pause, but the uttering of the praise for myself was something I would have rather not have done.

    Carol, I loved your comment!!

Shreve, NaNoWriMo is such a powerful writing mentor for hundreds of thousands of people. Are you going to count your words or type them up and submit them at the end of the month? I think the “winner” badge would be awesome on your website, a real testament to what can be accomplished when you set a goal and do everything in your power to ensure success.

Hi Shreve and everyone else doing Nano. I’m chugging away. Delayed by sickness but back on track. 5k words, but I’m hoping to power my way up to speed by the end of next weekend.

I also was delayed by actually figuring out my plot. Now I’ve got it, though, and it finally clicked and is flowing. So this week, I did some catch up. I found I was writing on the “note” function on my phone on the train. I sync it up with Toodledo online, then just copy and paste it into my word doc. I was shocked to find that between two days of commuting, I had done almost 1,000 words on the train alone. I like Toodledo because you don’t have to be online like GoogleDrive. Even if you’re offline, it will automatically catch up and sync when it gets a signal again, which is great, since I usually lose signal for about 20 minutes of my commute.

I also motivate myself by setting a goal of buying a new album or a new kindle book for every 10,000 words. Since I had to buy some background material reading, I’m going with music as my reward now.

I’m behind, but I just KNOW in my bones I’m going to catch up and actually win this year.

I love that idea of using passwords as affirmations! I am going to start doing that. Thank you!

All my passwords are affirmations. And sometimes prayers. Glad to hear someone else does this, too.

Stopping in to share good and bad news. Got the plot book I won here (yay, thanks!) The bad news: spent entire day working on my novel for NaNoWriMo — wrote an unprecedented 8k words. I was on FIRE – really getting into it, and so so inspired. Using Ommwriter — guess what? It crashed. Spinning ball of death – every single word I wrote today is gone, forever. I worked from morning til 1 am. All wiped out. Ommwriter didn’t back up or save ANY of it. Don’t know if I’ve ever felt this devastated outside of the passing of a love one or pet. NEVER EVER use Ommwriter, people. It is horrible. I feel murdered.

p.s. I still have my beginning 10k-plus words, but to lose over 8k which took 14-15 hrs of marathon writing labor and all of that blessed inspiration too — I don’t think I’m going to recover from this. :(((

I feel like I’m constantly changing passwords, mostly because I can never remember them… Definitely annoying… But, it does mean that I’m constantly changing passwords. ^^
As for NaNo, I had to give up again this year. I started out really well, was able to write about 7000 words in about two days, then got a bunch of math homework dropped on me. Didn’t get any writing done for a week, and I’m so far behind I can’t catch up. Maybe next year.

i have a notebook in which is written all the passwords which I either forget or confuse with each other
plus all the useful mac things which… as above.
How anyone remembers all this stuff is beyond me.
Affirmations sound memorable but would still need to be written for which is whose – aren’t they a bit long?

I simply desired to say thanks all over again. I am not sure what I would’ve undertaken in the absence of these secrets shown by you over that question. It was a horrifying setting for me personally, however , finding out a new well-written mode you handled it made me to jump for delight. I will be thankful for the help and sincerely hope you comprehend what a powerful job you are always getting into educating the others through your website. I’m certain you have never got to know any of us.
