Nano Fail (But Not Really)

☆ December 3, 2012

So, even though November felt like it was 400 years long, I did not get 50K words written for Nanowrimo. I wrote about 35,000 words. But I also reworked my plot in a major way, solving what had been a serious structural problem, so I’m thrilled about that. And Nano got me back into my book after 4+ months away, and it was downright fun, so, all in all, I consider the endeavor a success and one of the highlights of a dense and intense month. Now to maintain that momentum and accelerate through December! I shall scale that cliff and dive into the blue….

Like walking, writing is putting one word after the other and finding yourself somewhere wonderful. Keep going!

I’m impressed! 35k is quite an accomplishment, I have trouble just trying to post my comments :)
Sometimes a challenge is all we need to help get us back on track. I’m super excited about this book of yours in the works…
    Great job.

It’s the journey that was important and the prize at the end was not necessarily the one you were expecting but far better than you imagined.

I was raised in the Rockies (Colorado), and I swear — the sky is bluer in the high country than it is here at sea level where I live now. The rich contrast of green trees against blue sky, and the purple line that outlines the mountains just before dark … I really miss those things.
Congrats on your writing success! Fixing plots is hard work.

Let the laws of physics carry you onward: A body in motion stays in motion, unless impacted by an outside force. May the momentum be with you:) Looking forward to reading that book!

OOh, I miss your more frequent posts, but look forward to reading your next book! I loved The Daily Coyote–love the world it lets me inhabit if briefly.

    Fabulous.

You know, I don’t think it’s a matter of failing if you don’t reach 50,000. I think that is just an arbitrary goal. I think you succeeded where it counted. You got back into writing, you wrote quite a lot and you managed to solve a problem that was obstructing your progress. So accomplished what was really important. So what if you didn’t write 50,000 words. If you had but had failed to solve your problem or produce anything useable, that would not have been a success. Just a very large time consuming fail.

    So congratulations!

Ten words, or thousands. We are here. We will always be here. They will be worth waiting for. :)

You’re a NaNoWriMo winner, Shreve! Congratulations! My word count is much lower than yours, but I learned a lot about myself during November and now view it as National Novel Writing Warm-up Month. December is my month. I’m going to see what I can accomplish by the New Year.

    :o)

That’s still a lot of words in one month, and even better if they’re words that led to your novel being stronger than before! I was going to do NaNoWriMo again, but I knew my month was going to be too hectic, logistically and emotionally, so I opted for NaBloPoMo instead. It feels so good to blog regularly again that I’m going to try to keep up daily posting as long as I can!

Good job…meeting the milestone is not as important as putting out quality and getting back to the motivation of working on your blog.

CONGRATULATIONS on your awesome achievement in the dreary month of Nov. Selfishly hoping you will publish and share the results with us in the future.

I agree with the others, it was not a fail at all. You have a workable manuscript now. Word count is less important now. &, unlike some of the ones who got to 50,000, you will be able to find a publisher for yours.

How about writing a post on what keeps your motivated and driven, even when the going gets tough. Just a thought, I’d love to read it.

Y ~ there isn’t one, as of yet ~ I haven’t even told my agent what the story is! I’ve never written fiction before and am very insecure about it ~ I need to write a couple of drafts for me, and then we’ll see what happens……
