Hugs From Cows

Oreo’s sister / another heifer / Sir Baby / Fiona / Frisco

As I’ve mentioned before, Fiona and Oreo’s sister are BFFs.

fifihug1

This is how they hug.

fifihug3

And they’re both pregnant! They’ll calve in March ~ I’m so excited to see their babies. Will Oreo’s sister’s calf have a white face? What color do you think Fifi’s calf will be? She got it on with a black angus bull. I have high hopes that Fiona will have an udder like Daisy’s and I’ll be able to milk her, too.

Showing my city boy-ness…Is it common practice that animals from other owners live amongst your animals? How does that all work from a feeding/milking/healthcare point of view?

Oreo’s sister is referred to generically (sp?)
a couple of times which suggests she’s not part of th family…is she?

I think Fifi will calve black because i read somewhere that the black gene was dominant and because i know nothing about breeding cows but what i have read, i am a subject matter expert. ;)

I can’t get over how fuzzy they look! I’m used to the cows I saw at my aunt’s farm in Sebastopol, where they probably never got a winter bulk-up. :D

Thanks so much for the pics! Love seeing the other animals as much as seeing Charlie!

CO ~ Technically speaking, The Farmily has been my animals, and Oreo’s Sister (and Oreo, etc) are Mike’s cows.

But “Oreo’s Sister” isn’t a generic name to us. Many of the names we have aren’t “proper” names, like “The Big Titted Cow” and “The Snake Bit Cow” and “Little Six.” Some have number names, but even that doesn’t mean they’re anonymous in our minds – we know them all by their features and their personalities and quirks.

Thanks for giving us something while we all suffer in wait for the new book. We’re missing you here. your words. your photos. That is how one of my dogs hugs; she tilts her head and tucks it under my neck. sweet. ❥K

Why wouldn’t Fiona have udders you could milk? Do different types of cows have better milking udders than other types?

    February 7th, 2013 @ 11:14 am

But… Fiona’s still a calf herself (in my mind)! These kids grow up so fast, I tell ya.

And Sir Baby… holy jeez, that guy is buff! He belongs along the boardwalk in Santa Monica, shirtless, flexing, rollerblading with his Walkman.

K ~ They do! Dairy cow udders look absolutely freakishly mutant compared to an angus cow udder – they are SO much bigger (which translates to more milk). An angus cow will produce enough milk to raise one calf, while Daisy could raise four calves on the milk she produces. Since Fiona has both dairy and angus genetics (Daisy + Sir Baby), I don’t know how much milk she will produce – if it will be only enough for her calf, or if she can raise her calf with enough left over for moi. But from the way it looks now, I’m hopeful – hers is already far larger than the udders of the angus cows that are her age. We shall see!

That’s so neat! I never thought about why cows produce more than the calf would need. Thank you dairy cows for tasty milk, cheese, and yogurt!

Is this Daisy’s first grandcalf?? Seems like yesterday when you first posted the beautiful pictures of Fiona.

Fiona’s red coat sure stands out in that bunch!
I see Frisco’s horns are nicely shaped — does Sir Baby have horns also?

My first cow was a Jersey / Angus cross. She raised a fat calf and kept three families in milk. :) And she was nowhere as pretty as Miss Fi.

D ~ grandcalf! I love it. And yes, this will be Daisy’s first grandcalf.

P ~ nope, Frisco is the only one with horns.

    W ~ Yay – that’s awesome to hear.

Do you have a Farmily Tree drawn somewhere? I could see you making one on your wall or something with your beautiful handwriting with different branches for the cows and cats, etc. Guess Ricardo would go on the cow branch… :)

I know YOU know who “Oreo’s sister” is but I really think she needs a name. Cookie? Or even “Sis.” When I was little everyone thought of me as “Les’ sister” and I really got tired of that, so I imagine she must be, too!

everyone should have a BFF. these cows are absolutely adorable. such a gorgeous picture to see on a wintry day.
I dont think Oreo’s sister’s calf will have a white face…I think it will be all black.
thanks for always sharing…we know how busy you are with the book.

Frisco looks so regal, like he’s head of the pack. Must be the horns. Fiona’s color is just beautiful. Always enjoy pics of your family and the country. How are the cats?

  29. mlaiuppa
    February 7th, 2013 @ 10:34 pm

I think Fiona’s calf will be black or at least a very dark brown.

Since Fiona’s Daddy was black (Sir Baby) and Fiona’s baby’s Daddy was black, the odds are that the baby will be black or very, very dark.

I thought Fiona being a red head was a real wild card.

Daisy doesn’t provide enough milk? I thought you were swimming in it. (Well, bathing in it.) What are you going to do with all that extra milk?

    Are you making…..cheese?

Too cute. The last pic just “screams” HEY, WHAT YOU LOOKIN’ AT?

My guess – Oreo’s sister will have a white face calf.

FiFi – black but with a reddish undertone.

And how is Daisy’s adopted calf? Did you ever name it?

Miss Holstein is very pretty with the group. Maybe she should visit for an extended period.
