Love Child
☆ February 18, 2013
Our first calf of the year was born….
on Valentines Day!
Every year, I forget how tiny they are when they’re born.
{ 75 pounds is tiny for a cow }
It’s a boy.
And so it begins!

February 18th, 2013 @ 9:25 am
Aw, what a Baby Love he is too……
February 18th, 2013 @ 9:30 am
He’s an ebony in an ivory world isn’t he! So many lovely contrasts in your pictures Shreve.
February 18th, 2013 @ 9:40 am
Adorable, just adorable!!! After reading your farmily blog for so long, some days I want to meet a cowboy and have a farm. I just love animals – all animals!! Tho not sure I want to freeze my butt off in the wild west. :) The daffodils are blooming here in Texas, the trees are starting to bud and all the birds are singing. Spring is in the air!!
February 18th, 2013 @ 9:50 am
Precious is all that I can say!
February 18th, 2013 @ 9:55 am

February 18th, 2013 @ 10:02 am
Any name ideas, yet?
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:03 am
Do you have a name picked out or are you taking suggestions? I nominate “Cupid” since he was born on V. Day.
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:10 am
What a cutie! I nominate Eros as his name (if he’s getting one).
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:46 am
Onyx….I would call o
Him Onyx
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:58 am
Can’t even look at that without tearing up!! So precious…..that little tongue! :)
February 18th, 2013 @ 1:52 pm
Oh, Shreve, so darling! Congratulations :)
February 18th, 2013 @ 2:22 pm
I will be watching Cuteoverload for this one, he complies with so many Rules of Cute, especially that tongue!
Not sure about bovines but here in NZ the farmers are pushing lambing season further and further into winter – a lot of them lambing in July. JULY! That’s mid-winter! And then of course we get severe weather two weeks later and the lambs have no hope of surviving in 2 feet of snow. All for money, so the lambs are prime weight for the Christmas table. It’s insanity.
This little guy though, he’s that groundhog guy’s nemesis, he’s all “shadow schmadow, I’m here baby, it’s SPRINGTIME!” :D
February 18th, 2013 @ 2:45 pm
Awww . . . I think he should be called Valentino!
February 18th, 2013 @ 3:25 pm
Look at those legs! He is crazy-adorable.
Welcome Baby!
February 18th, 2013 @ 4:08 pm

February 18th, 2013 @ 4:46 pm
I pass a cow farm on my train a few times a week and a few days ago i was wondering when the calves were coming. Now I know to start looking, they are so adorable. Thanx for ahring your life with us.
February 18th, 2013 @ 5:16 pm
What a sweetie! Actually, he looks pretty tough for such a little guy :). Congratulations on the first calf! Something about his stature makes me think he’ll be a big guy!
February 18th, 2013 @ 5:36 pm
Oh, another miracle out in the world.
Welcome, little love child baby-boy!
February 18th, 2013 @ 6:41 pm

February 18th, 2013 @ 7:40 pm

February 18th, 2013 @ 8:11 pm

February 18th, 2013 @ 8:27 pm
This one is HANDSOME, Shreve. So very handsome. A beauty. Congrats!!!
February 18th, 2013 @ 9:27 pm
That’s a really cool shot. I love how his ears are all askew.
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:37 pm
woo wooo who’s your daddy?
February 18th, 2013 @ 10:47 pm
Gorgeous composition.
February 19th, 2013 @ 6:14 am
Who knew cows could blow raspberries?
February 19th, 2013 @ 10:27 am
Baby Love!!! he’s beautiful!!! :-)
February 19th, 2013 @ 10:44 am
Quite a sturdy calf. Luv the ears and the raspberry. If he is not going to be used for breeding, he could be matched up with Frisco and you would finally have your pair of “oxen” tho I suspect he might be a tad bigger than his Uncle Frisco.
If he is one of Sir Baby’s how about calling him “Earl of Ebony” It seems appropriate some how. Even this early in his life he seems to have an attitude.
February 19th, 2013 @ 12:15 pm
Born on my birthday!!
so… will his name be Valentino? :-)
February 19th, 2013 @ 4:41 pm
Ohhhh he is beautiful :) I agree with Gabriela – Valentino is the perfect name!
February 20th, 2013 @ 9:36 am
I agree with #15 & #31 & #32 – Valentino would be an awesome name. Also the name of my favorite motorcycle racer – Valentino Rossi! :)
February 20th, 2013 @ 1:25 pm
So cute!! Valentino would be such a fitting name, but I remember when you were naming Fiona and you said cow names should be something that sounds as close to the spoken name as it does when being hollered across wide open spaces. What about Romeo? Either way, he’s absolutely darling. My new cow-crush! :)
February 20th, 2013 @ 3:41 pm
ooh, I like Romeo. Romeo or ‘Tino……. He’s kinda got the attitude of Tino (short for Valentino).
February 20th, 2013 @ 7:07 pm
He is so unbelievably cute. I love how he is sticking his tongue out at you. So precious. I hope you name him and keep him. He is too cute to be hamburger.
February 21st, 2013 @ 9:09 am
LO ~ I hate to break it to ya, but they’re all this cute.
February 21st, 2013 @ 11:38 pm
Is that Sir Baby’s boy?
March 10th, 2013 @ 11:30 am
I live in Northern California, the real NorCal, north of Sacramento. It is cow country to an extent up here. I have a 30 minute commute to my biz in a neighboring town. I pass by pastures for the majority of my drive. people comment all the time “how can you make that drive every day?” and I tell them, its a beautiful drive. Mt. Shasta to the north, Mt. Lassen to the east, the Trinity Alps to the west, and the valley in between is filled with beautiful, rolling pastures, now dotted with big and little cows, horses and a handful of goats. I love this time of year, the greening up of the land, watching the little cows frolick and get bigger by the day. granted, it is in a drive-by fashion, but i still love it. Valentino is adorable.
