Forty? Cool. Not only will you have a punk band to do small events, you will have an orchestra/choir to do grand galas.

What a cute story! I love the thought of seeing someone driving around with a chicken perched on the dash!

May 20th, 2014 @ 7:33 am

May 20th, 2014 @ 8:21 am
Great little story perfectly told, and bonus, the hand written page framed with rocks and a feather.
May 20th, 2014 @ 8:29 am
Great story Shreve, the chickens have helped me get over Ricardo untimely demise….
May 20th, 2014 @ 8:29 am
Great story, and great handwriting!
May 20th, 2014 @ 8:58 am

May 20th, 2014 @ 9:00 am
Never a dull moment over there.
May 20th, 2014 @ 9:17 am
Although I would love to have seen a photo of the chicken on the dashboard, the one I have in my head will make me smile all day.
Your handwritten note is a wonderful balm for screen-itis!
May 20th, 2014 @ 9:43 am
Lovely start to my work day; adventure chicken — I just love that!
May 20th, 2014 @ 10:37 am
Just to let you know, I love all that you are and all that you do. Your stories make my week, and I am just a housewife of 42 years age 59. Makes me dream of another life entirely……
May 20th, 2014 @ 10:41 am
and here i get happy every time i see a dog in the front seat of a car! that happy chicken would have had me roaring with laughter.
i need to be careful that i don’t let your posts draw me into raising chickens…
May 20th, 2014 @ 10:59 am
Your presentation is beautiful! Thank you.
May 20th, 2014 @ 11:13 am
chicken on the dashboard..so funny
May 20th, 2014 @ 11:50 am
you get the blogger award for most beautiful presentation! I too love and smile big, when I see a dog sitting shotgun….reminds me of when my big german shepherd girlie Cara used to do that…a chicken on a dashboard would have me laughing all day! :)
May 20th, 2014 @ 12:42 pm
LOVE this story and the rock in the bottom right-hand corner looks 3-D! Good luck to your chicken mama and I hope the wandering ewe finds her place in this world! :)

Oh that is hilarious. I’m in the process of “blending” 3 babies with 2 grown hens. Daisy the Rhode Island Red is queen hen and was charging after the little girls yesterday and then pecking, no blood – just terrorizing. So, of course keeping a cool head (NOT – menopausal woman) yells at Daisy to “just be nice”. uh huh. Yea, that went real well. I had to laugh at myself…I was told my hens would aid me in my quest for “ZEN” and joy…For the most part, this is true. Just love a new baby to nurture! When I call them, they actually come a waddling faster than the dogs!
Loved this post! It’s just what I needed. Thank you!
May 20th, 2014 @ 2:30 pm
awesome! would love to live in a town where ewes go on walkabouts and chickens ride on dashboards :)
May 20th, 2014 @ 3:06 pm
Thanks for the story, Shreve!
Unfortunately, chickens aren’t always nice. My son was adding to his little flock, and one of his growing young ones was pecked to death by a vindictive hen. Well, not quite to death, my son had to finish the job.
May 20th, 2014 @ 3:24 pm
Best story EVER!
May 20th, 2014 @ 4:24 pm
I loved the story of the chicken riding on the dash—-I hope her eggs hatch—that’s a lot of chickens!
May 20th, 2014 @ 5:29 pm
Oh, wandering sheep and chauffer-driven hens! I want to live there!!!
Thanks, Shreve, for the wonderful post. I’m assuming the feather was donated by one of the Chicks. Lovely!
May 20th, 2014 @ 5:40 pm
And now you’ve got a Travel Chicken? That is awesome!
May 20th, 2014 @ 6:13 pm
What a fabulous cute story!! Those animals just love to roam and do whatever they want, don’t they? so fun to read this adorable adventure! & your presentation is always so unique.
May 20th, 2014 @ 6:17 pm
I was wondering how Mike didn’t see the nest in the trailer when he got the chicken out and put the sheep in, so I’m actually thinking the ewe laid the eggs? These could be some interesting additions to the farmily this fall. :)
May 20th, 2014 @ 6:56 pm
It’s wonderful to read your handwritten posts again.
Surprises all around.
Chicken getting a ride. Sheep getting a ride. Townsfolk seeing the truck go by with a chicken on the dash.
Glad the chicken got returned to her nest and I hope you all a lively bunch of chickies. Boy, will Momma have a tale to tell.
May 20th, 2014 @ 8:30 pm
Love it!
May 20th, 2014 @ 8:47 pm
The only thing our neighbor ever asks us to do is pull the trash bins back up to her house. I’d much rather be riding down the road with a chicken on my dash.
May 20th, 2014 @ 9:20 pm
Wow! Good thing the eggs didn’t roll around or get smashed. I would have given anything to see the dashboard chicken! ha ha!
May 21st, 2014 @ 12:03 am
Ha… haha… hahaha… Just gets funnier and funnier the more I think about it. Everything about this story is simply wonderful. I get the biggest kick out of animals riding in cars. The other night I was driving in the country and came upon an old farmer driving something of a cross between a golf cart and a mini-tractor with a giant load of hay in the back. Snugged up tightly against this lovely old man was the biggest German shepherd I’ve ever seen. There was not a speck of space between them, and there were miles of seat to the right of the dog. Of course, the dog was looking around as he was leaning into the man. I blinked, then grinned, then chuckled, and now I’ll carry the memory in a special place to be hauled out at a moment’s notice when I need a chuckle. Walkabout-Ewe and Dash-Hen-with-nest will live there, too. Thank you. :)
p.s. – Mike is absolutely yummy, by the way. He is an integral part of why every part of this story is so delightful. “He placed the chicken back on the nest, and there she sits.” Freakin’ priceless.
May 21st, 2014 @ 2:33 am
What the cluck? Love the story- every single word of it!
May 21st, 2014 @ 3:18 am
What a wonderful story! Love it!!
May 21st, 2014 @ 7:11 am
Always enjoy your stories! I don’t know what I would do without my weekly dose of Shreve, Mike, Charlie and the rest of the Farmily!
May 21st, 2014 @ 3:21 pm
Too bad Mike didn’t snap a pix of the hen on his dashboard!
May 21st, 2014 @ 5:30 pm
Beautiful story – both presentation and tale! Love the chicken riding on the dashboard. Glad Mike noticed the nest and back the hen back on the nest :). Hope you get little chicks!
May 21st, 2014 @ 7:06 pm

Thanks for that TREAT of your beautiful handwritten story framed with the feather and pretty rocks. Mike sounds like such a sweetie. How cute about the chicken taking in the “sights”. Awww TOO adorable! I just LOVE chickens! So grateful to have you here for all of us to enjoy, as well as Mike and the Farmily!!! Thank you! HUGS

Those renegade chickens!!! Got to watch out for them!
May 24th, 2014 @ 1:02 am
I grew up rural, so this brought back some warm memories. :)
It also reminds me of the CW McCall song “Wolf creek pass”..
So heres a youtube video. :P

Poetry to my ears!

I love the fact that you’ve hand-written this story, Shreve … like you did the summer you lived up pasture. I’d love it if you were able to do this more.
Chickens and sheep and new baby chicks .. your life on the land answers some deep need I constantly feel living in a big city – for the simple (and not always easy), real life. Thank you for sharing!
May 25th, 2014 @ 4:10 pm
The same thing happened to a couple of my co-workers about 2 years ago… They were sitting in their pick-up truck waiting for the building to open, and they kept hearing a “noise”. Mr. says to Ms. “That kinda sounds like a chicken”.
It wasn’t until they actually got out of the truck to go in to work that they realized one of their birds had stowed away in the bed of the truck. (Even after they had stopped at the local gas station for coffee!)
Another co-worker, who lives just down the street from the building, went home and brought back a cat carrier to keep the chicken in until the end of the day.
Makes one wonder what chickens think, when they do things like that…
May 26th, 2014 @ 12:31 pm
What a great story! Made me laugh out loud and put a smile on my face; THANK YOU:)
May 27th, 2014 @ 9:34 pm
Yes! I love chickens. My favorite Bantam ran away one day and returned a while later with 14 chicks! How do they do it?
May 28th, 2014 @ 5:43 am
MF ~ WOW! That is amazing!!!
