The vertical posts down the center are temporary test supports; we jack them up with a truck jack to see if they are bearing weight and whether we need to add real load-bearing posts. So far, no.

Nice pics on a perfect day. Is this an original design or some kind of DIY kit? I would love to have not only the skill but the confidence to tackle something like this. Really awesome.

Gorgeous! Will it be a heated barn? I know how bitter cold it gets there. Brrrrrrr

Oh, the beams are lovely! Lodge style makes me swoon.

    Sexy barn, y’all.

Just a suggestion but gut your house for the animals and you move into the barn. Beautiful.

what gorgeous wood and craftmanship!! You & Mike are very talented! But
…I look past the barn at that virgin land and mountains and cant help but wish I were there.

I’m with Marg, it looks so nice I’d want to live in it.

i can’t help but notice that it appears to be sitting directly on the ground. could never get away with that around here — would need a foundation or at least posts that extend down into the ground below the frost line — otherwise it would get shifted around during the freeze/thaw cycles. love the ochre wood against the blue sky!

Barn envy, right here. Absolutely beautiful! The best to all creatures, great and small.

Just love the smell of new timber in a building! Can I come stay in there a few days and let you pamper me like you do the cows when it’s done? I’m in serious need of pampering and escaping.

Lovely images showing a fascinating process.

Kudos to all the hard work. The older I get, the more I appreciate how much labor goes into daily life, the things we take for granted.

Shreve, it looks like you and Mike know what you’re doing, but in terms of the center vertical test supports, make sure you are considering the extra load of the roof shingles and several feet of snow on it later. You are doing a lovely job – better hurry before the snow sticks for real!

How do you treat your lumber? I cut down five water oaks and am going to (inspired by you) use the trunks for fence posts.

Gorgeous barn! The contrast of the honey-colored pine against the brilliant sky is breathtaking, and the star braces are beautiful. Way to go, you guys!

Beautiful work of art! Constructing a building like that is a real talent and skill. Very impressive. Thanks for sharing.

I just have to add that one of my favorite things about this time of year is the deep blue that the sky gets, as evidenced in your pictures. We have hundreds of white gulls that like to circle above our house and against that blue it’s beautiful.

That roof pitch looks kinda shallow. Do you not get much of a snow load in your area?

I love the beauty of the simplicity in the architecture.
The landscape behind the beams is surreal.

I’m also interested to know how you treat the lumber!
