Ahoy From The Arctic

☆ November 25, 2014

TRsnow

So, it got cold. Negative 26ºF, to be precise. One nice thing about that kind of cold is the perma-endorphin high I get. And three degrees (which is still well below freezing) feels downright balmy. It didn’t get above freezing for ten days, not even for an hour. All the local sparrows and wild cottontails moved into the chicken house – which is just as cute as you might imagine it to be.

Friday, it finally rose above freezing. Outside, there was the sound of dripping, and I had a glorious snowhike with the pups, in a tank top. I also wore wool pants and muck boots, yes, but my arms were bare. Huzzah, Vitamin D! Now it’s snowing again. But that’s OK; to snow, it has to be warm (it’s relative, now).

Another masterful composition. Blue-white sky, white-white plains, black cow leaning in for a photobomb :). Thanks for sharing, Shreve.

*shivers* Winter is gorgeous to look at, but there’s just no way I could endure that. I’ll stay here in Texas and just look at your gorgeous photos. :)

A ~ I tried, but the light is so low in there, the pics are a blurry mess! And I refuse to use flash with animals…. It’s SO CUTE tho! And the chickens were like, whatevs, the more the merrier (and bunnies put off a lot of BTUs)

And I thought it was cold here in CO! It was stew weather, though, and I have to tell you what an AWESOME stew meat comes from StarBrand! Can’t wait to make more…or beef soup!

    Happy Thanksgiving, Shreve.

    How interesting!
I can (sort of) imagine how “warm” it must feel when it is just around freezing after so long that far below.
I like picturing the sparrows and bunnies in with the chickens.
Just so I understand, are BTUs the “British Thermal Units”, or something else?

Photobomb! The sky is beautiful and I’m happy to hear some of the wild critters found a warm spot.

If you could possibly post a pic of your chicken house with the visiting sparrows and cottontails, well, that would make my whole entire day.

Brrr. Glad everyone survived the bitter blast. I’m sure the sparrows and bunnies appreciated the chickens’ hospitality and that they were all able to share their warmth (and probably their food, too).

Do Charlie, Chloe and Eli pile up at night with you, sharing their warmth? Mine do, some of them under the covers, some on my pillow. Makes for great snuggling!

Wishing you, Mike and all the Farmily a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving!

    Hugs to all,
    Theresa

It is off subject, but since your comment that Wyoming teaches “non-attachment” I have been hoping that the farmily is intact and healthy. Specifically I am wondering about the adorable Leila. She changed so drastically from her calf coloring to the multicolor! Looking forward to an update….also to pics of the new barn. In your spare time, of course!
    HAPPY THANKSGIVING, SHREVE

It looks so quiet where you live. On those bitter cold days with no wind you can probably hear a truck coming a 1/2 mile away. As for the chickencoop photos, do you have any painter’s spot lights around? You could diffuse that and bounce it off the ceiling to create enough good light. They might enjoy the heat from them too.

Woohoo! A post from Shreve. Made my day. And I’ve been meaning to tell you ever since November 1 that when I turned the calendar page and saw Frisco my heart melted. I went back and looked at every pic of him I could find. I wish I could have met him in this life. I definitely plan to connect with him someday when I meld with the cosmos. P.S. So glad you didn’t use flash on the critters. But then that’s you isn’t it?
