Random Numbers
☆ November 10, 2014
I just returned from another quick trip to the Northwest; I drove this time and got home hours before Winter hit in full force – we have serious snow outside right now!
The morning I left Poulsbo, WA, I woke at 4:30 am, jumped in my truck while still in my PJs, and caught a very early ferry to Seattle in order to get the 10 hour drive to Bozeman, MT done in mostly daylight. I used the ferry ride to get dressed and have coffee, then wandered the boat taking phone pics of random numbers I saw. The Giveaway recipients!
This particular boat had the capacity to ferry 188 autos, according to a little chart on a bulletin board by the First Mate’s office.
The walls of the ferry showcase vintage photographs and prints from local artists. This gorgeous print was signed by the artist in ‘91.
The Seahawks obsession is still in full force after their win at Superbowl 48. Flags, posters, even football-shaped cookies frosted in blue and green are EVERYWHERE.
In case of ferry fire, station 31.
The delivery van parked beside me, with the Seattle area code 206 stickered on the door.
So there we have it: 31, 48, 91, 188, 206! I’ll be emailing you directly.
THANK YOU to everyone who shared a bit of themselves for the Giveaway. I have loved reading all your words, which, together, created a truly awesome mandala of life and experience and heart. So beautiful and real. Thank you.

Very clever way to get the numbers!

Yeah, that was a clever number generator, but it didn’t choose mine, so I’m bummed. :o(
Oh well, that’s okay — I’ll survive. Congrats to the lucky winners, and may you all enjoy your WY surprise packages!

What a fun way to find the numbers! Very clever! We’ve always lived in the PNW and are very familiar with all those scenes. So fun to know you have been coming through here now and then! Seems you have been more on the water side and we live in the woodsy side, but it all blends together pretty well. As you must have experienced on your drive east out of Seattle…smells of harbor and salt mixed with ferns and bark. And dampness. Then the dry blue skies of eastern Washington, and pine tree needles everywhere.
*Hope your friend is doing better.

Since breaking my ankle six weeks ago, it has taken all of my time each day just to attend to my menagerie. Most other things have temporarily fallen by the wayside, many days away from art, photography and my computer. I was amazed and moved when I found all the comments from people sharing their past year! In the last 12 months or so, I’ve experienced multiple losses. Reading everyone else’s stories made me realize that we really are all in the same boat (of life) experiencing these challenges. Shreve, and everyone, thank you for the perspective. I wish all of you well.

I love the subtle embossing on the print. Now I want to go look in my plant guide to see what type of flower it is. Thanks for the fun!

Well, my number wasn’t on the ferry, so I didn’t win the giveaway, but the 2 Charlie calendars I ordered arrived yesterday, so I feel like a winner anyway. And someone on my gift list this year will be a winner, too!

Well darn, I didn’t win– but hey, I’m still above ground. That’s victory enough for me.

OMG! You were here in my little corner of the world! Wish it were under better circumstances and that your friend will be well. Roi in Poulsbo – who spends quite a bit of time at Churchmouse Yarns and Teas on Bainbridge Island. Also Eagle Harbor Books where I bought two extra copies of your book for sharing your story with friends at knitting circle.

Shreve, I have been hearing about the turn in the weather across most of the nation—Wyoming, Colorado, Wisconsin, New York, Chicago, The pan handle of Texas…etc. Here in San Diego it is 68 degrees on the coast where I live! This is why I live in San Diego despite the real possibility of a major earthquake or Sunomi—excuse the spelling! I am glad you enjoyed your trip and I pray that you and yours make it through this winter intact!
Love, Patricia

Kind of weird checking in with your blog and seeing Puget Sound ferries. I live on a different island, Vashon, up here. Weird but cool, because the ferries are one of the coolest things about this area. I am blessed/cursed to get to journey to Seattle every day (for the last 20 years) on the ferry. My commute time is 4 hours a day (RT) but I wouldn’t give it up to be able to live in such a special place. It’s like your blog about living, loving and life in a special place like WY with the nature, critters and people. Best wishes for your friend and your blog. Vashon is a cool, very rural compared to Bainbridge & Poulsbo if you ever have time for a side trip. Take care, Joe.

The artist of the print you photographed is Marvin Oliver, featured on p 46 of the Columns, the UW’s alumni magazine March 2015. He is a Native American artist working at the Burke Museum and teaching at the UW.
I love your blog! Longtime reader.
