One Hundred Elk

☆ December 16, 2014

100elk1
A herd of elk came by at sunset.

100elk2
These are all cow elk, females.
They stood around for a moment, waiting for everyone to catch up…

100elk3
…then continued on their way.

100elk4
This photo is taken mere seconds after the previous one, just zoomed out.
The elk are nowhere to be seen. This land looks flat, but it’s full of hiding places –
a hundred huge elk are right out there, but no one would ever know….

It really speaks to the vast open spaces of Wyoming that a hundred giant elk can look like an army of ants and disappear so easily.
Really like the lavender snow and golden prairie grasses in the light of the setting sun.

Not pictured: one past-his-prime bull elk with a combover huffing and puffing after the herd.

What a beautiful site of wide-open spaces. Very refreshing. Thanks for sharing Shreve.

Amy – hahaha. …or a young bull elk trying to call them back but his voice breaks mid-bugle.

Amy & Jenny – – thank you for the imagery!!!

And it amazes me how such a herd of animal are so very silent.

    Beautiful!

(my rabbit keeps sticking his head up my pant leg when I’m typing; so much less majestic and mysterious than the elk. :P)

Ah, the stuff of life. And so life-affirming. So much better than the nightly news. Thanks, Shreve, for sending us peace and beauty!

My guy and his buddies just returned from a fruitless hunting trip to Craig, CO. Not enough snow while they were there. I have a feeling I will see a grown man cry when I show him your photos.

What an AMAZING sight that is! I keep seeing signs warning of Elk here in Arizona, but I have yet to see ONE in the ten years I have lived here! I think someone is telling stories…..

Ah, how wonderfully those images convey the sheer scale of the landscape. Thanks, Shreve.

Then there’s the Elk Herd that roams the town of Estes Park CO at will during the winter.

Loved seeing this. So very much. What a long spectacular view! I would have been thrilled to witness that. Out here in Casper, I can go to the mountain but rarely see any wildlife. Thanks for posting this!

I love the pictures and the video! I had no idea they sounded like that at all. Kind of sounds like they all had a few too many beans and are letting some squeakers out! HA, oh man it needs to be Friday.

Your pictures always leave me speechless. I am serious , I haven’t any words to describe how I feel after this picture, as all your other. Tranquil. Happy. Peaceful. I wish I had better but those first come to mind.

This has nothing to do with elk, but is about a cow who is loved as much as you love yours, and I thought you would like it:

It amazes me how you title Charlie’s photos,,,so right on. Ever since I found your book about him, he’s been a part of what I look forward to in the morning. I’m a born Yankee, but do so love the West way of life in my old age, for 58 years now (I’m now almost 84). I love the sun, low humidity, and don’t miss the snow or rain, yet now either is a present, not something to grumble about. Thank you for all your words and pictures
