Catch Up & A Chicken Contest

Ahoy! I started a new dose of thyroid meds about ten days ago and am finally feeling RIGHT. It’s so nice. It’s so easy! Every day is no longer a battle, as it has felt for the past six months. I wake up smiling again, like I used to. I am so glad.
I did find out that one of my vocal cords is paralyzed due to nerve trauma during surgery. The nerve is not severed, so it’s possible it will heal and my voice will come back. In the meantime, I am scheduled for a temporary fix: an injection of collagen right into the vocal cord. This plumps it up enough to move the cord to the midline, so the other working vocal cord can meet it and make strong sounds – right now, there is an air gap, which is why my voice is weak and breathy. It’s a simple office procedure and, like a Real Housewife’s face, it’s temporary – the collagen will eventually be absorbed by the body. At that time, I’ll know if the nerve has healed or if I need to repeat the injection or have a permanent procedure done.
One of the boons of my lengthy recuperation has been the chance to devour a giant stack of books. I just finished I Am Malala. INCREDIBLE. So riveting, so profoundly beautiful, so worth your time if you’ve not read it yet. (The audio version is great, too).
The Farmily is excellent, everyone is peaceful and happy and well. Maia has become mother of the year, always doting and protective, and Luna is thriving. And the chicks are nearly grown up! I always wondered how many would be roosters and how many would be hens, and it is almost clear. In about two weeks, I think we will know for sure who is what. In the meantime, let’s bet!

I just finished watching your speech (again) as I needed to hear your words. I then checked my email and you had posted a blog post! Must be the blood moon. I just had surgery last week and am healing as well. I will be thinking of you and praying for healing and your procedure. I’m guessing 3 roosters and 3 hens!

My mother has struggled with thyroid issues since her early 20’s when they removed hers…finding the balance in the meds is always like walking a tight rope!

Glad to hear this injection will provide some relief. I’ve lived with hypothyroidism for years. Still taking medication, and seem to do quite well on them.

I’m feeling four hens, two roosters. Glad to hear you’re feeling well! I’m recovering from a c-section and purposefully sitting down for a rest when chores go undone and needs unaddressed is HARD. It’s a relief to have energy enough to keep up with your own life!

Happy to hear your thyroid meds are finally getting balanced. It does take a while.
Sorry to hear about the vocal fold. But since the nerve isn’t severed it could just be traumatized.
Has enough time passed for it to be healed and ready for therapy? I knew a singing teacher that worked with non-musician patients doing voice therapy. It’s a shame you are so far out in the country you probably don’t have access to a vocal coach/therapist.

I’m so happy to hear that you’re continuing to feel better bit by bit, and that the new medication seems promising. I took care of my mom as she went through various treatments and surgeries, and it was always a long road for her spiritually and physically to get back to beginning to feel “okay”. Then another road to travel to reach yet higher ground; I always admired the patience revealed in her perseverance and it’s a lesson I’ve taken to heart. I’m so, so happy that you are beginning to truly feel well again!
As for the chicks, I think I’ll say one handsome rooster and four beautiful hens.
