Tech Tot

☆ September 20, 2016

I’m always well behind the curve with tech stuff, and it wasn’t until halfway through my delivery drives that I finally figured out (or, rather, decided to figure out, because it took all of 3 minutes) how to put podcasts in my phone.

From that day forward, I guzzled podcasts during my drives. Here are a few of my favorite episodes – leave yours in the comment section, I’m on the hunt for more!

Lisa Dwan on Beckett & Not I (Here’s The Thing, it’s the second half of this podcast)

Rethinking Work (To The Best Of Our Knowledge)

From Tree To Shining Tree (RadioLab)

MSF’s (Médecins Sans Frontières, aka Doctors Without Borders) Joanne Liu Still Believes War Has Rules (Here’s The Thing)

Angela Kinsey (The JV Club)

I love ALL the episodes I’ve ever listened to from “On Being” with Krista Tippett. Great interviews with artists, poets, writers, musicians, scientists, yoga practitioners, philosophers… All superbly interesting!!!

I mainline podcasts these days, as they let me do other stuff while consuming entertainment. My favorites are almost all comedy podcasts (with the exception of Stuff You Missed in History Class):
My Brother, My Brother and Me (Fake Advice)
    Sawbones (Medical history/comedy)
The Adventure Zone (Dungeons and Dragons/comedy)
    The Flop House (Bad Movies)

Hm. Perhaps I should expand my horizons a bit! (Who am I kidding! All I want to do is laugh in my free time.)

Have to agree with Deborah, I’m an “On Being” with Krista Tippett fan (on desktop however). She covers all genre’s touching the inner spiritual. http://www.onbeing.org/

One favorite is a video with Roseanne Cash:
    http://www.onbeing.org/blog/rosanne-cash-room-krista-tippett-live-video/3788

Krista also highlights Parker J. Palmer.

Also NPR’s podcasts–Wait Wait Don’t Tell Me for fun

looking forward to checking out other suggestions.

Happier with Gretchen Rubin, author of the Happiness Project, Happier at Home, and Better Than Before. All sorts of tips based on both research and her personal experience about ways to improve your happiness. Generally light-hearted, kind, and funny.

well during this election, i’ve been listening to Rachel Maddow. i forget to listen but i do like Science Friday (NPR). i listen to Vermont Edition a lot – a favorite vacation state. and there is Car Talk – i cannot help but laugh every single time – the guys laughter is infectious and the callers are hilarious – often more about human nature than cars.

I listened to Criminal while driving from Vegas to Durango…nine hours flew by. I also got 30 days free Audible on Amazon with two free downloads and listened to Girl on the Train. Audible is my go-to for commuting to work now.

I love podcasts. If you only have a short time to listen, I’d recommend
Memory Palace. It’s a fine collection of little stories written and told by Matt DeMeo.I love the episode titled The Brothers Booth.
More Perfect is surprisingly engaging for a podcast about the Supreme Court. I also enjoy Lore and Death, Sex & Money which another one of your readers recommended. There are so many and it’s so much fun to “discover” a new one.

I really really miss Caustic Soda (a hilarious podcast about horrible things!), but I’m tickled pink they read my salmonella story on-air. ;D

I like Dan Carlin’s Hardcore History (each episode is 3-4hrs), but as I always find with history podcasts, it’s mildly frustrating that there’s an excessive emphasis on WWII. I really like his “What-Ifs of 1066” and “Steppe Stories” ones.

Snap Judgement is good too, as is, of course, Welcome to Nightvale.

Wow, I am a tech tot also and didn’t really know about podcasts. I’ve heard now in your and the other comments here about many I will listen to. Thanks. I have listened to TED.com talks. They have a very wide variety of topics and subjects. You can watch/listen to them on the computer, or IPad or smartphone, of course. I’ve used the latter the most often to listen to while I’m in the car or waiting for someone, or just vegging out.

What a great way to multitask!
My favs are in no order:
    The Stephanie Miller Show
Girl on Guy with Aisha Tyler
    WTF Mark Maron
    This American Life
    Doug Loves Movies
    Ted talks
    Stuff You Should Know

    OnBeing definitely a favorite

The Vinyl Cafe — music, stories, laughter

    The TED radio hour

    Radio Lab

And a new favorite is Modern Love from the NYTimes

Wasn’t “From Tree to Shining Tree” exceptional? I love RadioLab, but they really outdid themselves with that episode – it was such a magical, spiritual story. I don’t know if you’ve ever read Orson Scott Card’s Speaker for the Dead, but that filled me with the same sense of upwardness and awe.

I have podcasts going for most of my day when stuck at home doing mundane things, can’t get enough. I binged-listened to most of radio lab’s archive when I first found them, all fantastic. Also
-Anything from the Radiotopia group of podcasts.
-Reply All and other Gimlet group podcasts.
    -The Moth
    -Invisibilia
    – Ideas from CBC
-Many already mentioned such as Snap Judgement, More Perfect, NPR podcasts etc.

My latest one I’ve gotten into is Beautiful stories from Anonymous People — A random person will phone in and talk anonymously about anything they like for an hour, really interesting peek into all sorts of lives.

I’m off to go download some episodes from a podcast I was just directed to called “This is actually happening”, more first person true stories.

Beautiful photo! Podcasts are so great, I only discovered them about 6 months ago and now wonder how I ever got through a task without them. Episodes i would share are:

The Mystery Show: Case #3 belt buckle.
(don’t be fooled by the title, it’s beautiful)

The New Yorker Fiction: Robert Coover Reads Italo Calvino’s ‘The Daughters of the Moon’

Lore – any and all of them are weirdly fascinating

I’m going to check out the podcasts you posted now, I so look forward to finding new ones to enjoy.
