Farcical Metatarsal

☆ February 25, 2019

I broke my foot last week. I broke my foot in the most absurd possible way: I was barefoot, having recently gotten out of the bath, sitting at my computer, working. Upstairs, Mike was cooking a pork chop that smelled so good I wanted to smell it up close. My right foot was kind of asleep but I thought when I stood up it would re-activate. I took one step out of my chair and my foot didn’t realize it existed and just smooshed under me into the cement floor and down I went. I fell on top of my foot and the torque of my fall fractured the fifth metatarsal bone. (I asked the ER doc if this is a sign of osteoporosis and he said, nope, purely physics and quite common.)

So now I’m hobbling around in a boot splint. I should be mostly fine by the time calving season starts. In the meantime, I’m working on a huge new project that does not require the use of my feet, which I am so excited to share with you SOON!

No down booties for you for a while. Such a freak accident. So very sorry to hear about it but I know you’ll be healed up and back to your normal outdoor life by Spring.

Sorry to hear about your bone break. Don’t we feel foolish when we have to say it wasn’t due to a dramatic accident. I do hope that you are getting plenty of calcium. I suspect that living in the area you do that Vitamin D isn’t a problem. Those of us in the frozen cloudy New England don’t get enough of it naturally.
Wishing you a quick and easy recovery! Scratch Charlie behind the ears for me.

    Gurl! Ack!

@Anne – or the frigid Midwest. ;D My vit D was so bad, I basically had rickets, hahahah.. finally back to where I need to be, but man, after a few months of losing my hair, I’m glad my doc suggested we check that.. doh!

Oh my! Get well soon, Shreve!
It might be a little bit of a consolation to know that you are not the only person who hurt her foot because she was … sitting. Same thing happened to me after meditation once and I came down not too gracefully when my foot didn’t respond as planned. Didn’t break anything, but had a bad sprain and limped for weeks. I made up a story of ‘having slipped on the stairs’ because I was too embarrassed to tell people that I apparently couldn’t manage to stand up from a seated position without hurting myself

oh my goodness. I’m so sorry this happened to you. I can completely sympathize with you, since I’ve done the same thing with both feet. I however, managed to pull the tendon away from the side of the offending tarsal as well. It was not quite my finest hour.
I hope you will mend quickly and get back on both feet soon.

oh no! i hope you heal up fast – and who knew this was a common thing? and from all the comments, i see just how common – i am going to be more careful! I’ve broken little toe but by catching it on something.

I hate it when that happens.

Here’s an ironic injury story: My big sister plays in a women’s hockey league. She’s the goalie and when she was 58 they won the nationals in their age group.

A few years ago she broke her wrist. After skating 11 miles on a flooded bike trail somewhere in Canada, she slowed to a walk and fell OTW to her car!

    Take care!

Ugh! So sorry to hear about your foot. Having suffered similar breaks, I know what a pain this is ~ both literally and figuratively. Try to think of this time as something of a forced vacation. I wish you a quick and complete recovery!
    Sending hugs and prayers….

Years ago i was sitting at the kitchen table, with my legs crossed. I got up quickly not realizing that my foot was asleep. I hit the floor hard, but didn’t hurt anything but my pride.

I just got out of my walking boot a few weeks ago for my 5th metatarsal break – slipped off the dark porch step on my way out to work. The Jones Fracture Club welcomes you.

Goodness, Shreve! Take care of yourself!
I have weird accidents, too. Have twice stepped into clothes hangers that mysteriously lie on the ground. One time it was underneath snow and I did a faceplant.
Another time I opened the closet door really fast and didn’t get my foot out of the way. Broke my little toe.
Life, it happens. You will heal! Looking forward to your big project.

Get better fast, Shreve! I know it hurts – did that one when I was 8 months pregnant. It is amazing how much that tiny bone can affect your mobility. Not to mention the pregnancy part….

Ow. How frustrating. You are Brave. TAs Eeyore would say, “I received a loud bounce.” Take good care; there are thousands of people and other critters out here sending you Love. Maybe this will prompt us all to wiggle our feet before rising. That might be good . . . I broke the skinny little toe next to the left big toe, minding my own business and jumping on a trampoline. Now, how did that happen? The doc had seen some toe cases, was kind, and said with a gentle smile, “Nothing to do for it. Just take it easy for awhile”. That was 30 years ago. The toe is still crooked but works OK. Pretty soon you could write a book “Weird Things that have Happened to My Readers From Around the World,” or, “Earth is a Thing You Can Trip Over.”

It’s wonderful that Charlie had the good fortune to be saved. But isn’t it your partner’s profession to kill coyotes? I notice that the government under that moron, Trump is re-introducing the use of cyanide in killing wildlife they consider pests, i.e., foxes, coyotes, skunks, opossums, etc. You profess to love wildlife and domestic animals, dogs, cats, cows, pigs, ducks, etc. Yet, you’ll eat steak and pork-chops. You are, without a doubt, a passive-aggressive hypocrite. You cannot have it BOTH ways. I am an animal lover, and it includes ALL animals. I DON’T EAT MEAT AT ALL, and there is no excuse for doing so, except IGNORANCE. And living in Wyoming, there is plenty of that to be had. You, obviously, can compartmentalize. How fortunate for you, but don’t try pedaling that happy horsesh$t about how you love animals, because you don’t. You can’t love animals and eat them!
