The Psychedelic Jellybean

☆ July 16, 2011

A few autumns ago, Mike did a favor for a guy; Mike didn’t need nor expect anything in return, but the guy was so grateful, he wanted to give Mike his camp trailer in trade.

Mike said, “no, really, it’s OK,” but the guy insisted and signed the title over to Mike.  When Mike brought it home, he said, “what am I going to do with this?” and I said, “I have a thousand answers to that question,” and he said, “alright, then, it’s yours.”

Before:

I immediately ‘saw’ the psychedelic jellybean it was meant to be but had neither the time nor the reason to do anything about it, and so it sat in mediocrity, not old enough to be retro, not new enough to be nice.  Until I decided to spend the summer on the mountain.

Stealing away an hour here and a few hours there, I transformed the camp trailer into the psychedelic jellybean, an exercise in how many colors and patterns I could cram in this space in the least amount of time at the lowest possible cost. In larger living spaces, I prefer a look that is sparse and natural, airy, light. But white + sparse in a small area just seems too much like a cell in a mental ward, so for small spaces, I firmly believe the more color the better.

Work in progress while streaming Pulp Fiction, the ideal background-movie, since the soundtrack and dialogue are the best parts:

gtip

Two quarts of paint ~ sky blue and raspberry: $22. The cantaloupe color {which erroneously looks like like ‘radioactive kewpie doll’ in the photo above} was left over from my checkerboard floor. All fabric came from the thrift store and set me back about $20. Oh, how I love vintage fabric:

gt6

gt5

I tore off the dingy vinyl cushion covers and made new ones, and, if I may brag, did it all without pins or a table:

The trailer ceiling was torn and ugly so I covered it with fabric.  I originally thought I’d use adhesive velcro to attach the fabric to the ceiling but my god velcro is expensive!  They sell it by the inch! So I stapled it up – just household office staples – and had only one incident of arterial bleeding when I accidentally sent a staple into my finger.

gt4

I loved working on this. Even though the majority of my time on the mountain is spent outside, after the challenges of last summer and fall and after giving 9000% of myself to EMT training through the winter, it was just fun to work on something a bit frivolous, something tangible rather than mental, and totally transform this space.

I absolutely love it!!!! You will never wake up in a bad mood in this “happy” trailer. You most likely won’t be able to fall asleep until it is completely dark though. Well done Shreve. Is Charlie going to be rubbing all over the Eli wall like he did with the floor?

that’s the cutest little camp trailer! I have some friends who bought a beat-up airstream and she did the same thing. It’s adorable.

A true gipsy camp trailer it is, it’s always been about the colors they used and the Romanian fabrics they carried from home and whatever they could gather along the way…Just like you….They would arrive, sell baskets, everyone would look at them and then they would disappear…just gone until the next season.
It’s beautiful. Fabulous fabric combinations on the square cushions. Lucky you…I am happy to see where the babies will be hanging out.

Staple your finger to the whatever?? Using the floor as a sewing table?? I am glad to see I am not the only one who does that sort of thing.

I love the colour and pattern combo.

It will make a fabulous retreat after a hard days work.

Divinely whimsical. This is my first time ever seeing the inside of a lollipop… yum. You created a memory while preparing for your Off the Grid Adventure Memory – perfect. There is something so healing (even when we don’t know we need healing) about a self-nurturing project like this happy haven. My favorite part? You are a rough-and-tumble, elk antler-wieldin’, chaps-wearin’, cow-wranglin’, house-buildin’, calf-birthin’, stall-muckin’, horse-whisperin’, EMT-rescuin’, GIRLY-GIRL! Love the feminine bed and pillows. They remind me of the first cabin where you were suddenly and dubiously gifted Charlie: Surprise! “It’s a boy!”

    Gypsy Trailer Chic!

This is the biggest deal since shabby chic, which is really old now. Still nice, of course, but Gypsy Trailer Chic is a big deal.

    This is such an upper!

Now you’ve got me going again. I have long wanted to paint my office purple. Actually magenta. I’m choosing between Benjamin Moore Pre-Dawn Sky and Twilight Magenta.

It REALLY needs doing, because the walls are now just like the interior of my doctor’s office–the color of dead flesh. We’ve been in this 1925 house 17 years, renovating and paying as we go. My office and little dressing room are among the last to be improved.

Who else is going to do something fabulous in response to Gypsy Trailer??

  22. catherine
    July 16th, 2011 @ 10:34 am

Well Cindy, I am going to buy a small trailer and gipsy it up. I always wanted one, I’ll use it to camp and watch the stars in the middle of the Sonora desert.

Oh how I wish I could paint my rooms with color. I abhor white or off-white/cream walls! But I rent & until I own a house, I can’t. Like everyone else said, this is the perfect gypsy trailer. I have a gypsy soul; it’s just being repressed b/c I can’t afford to travel like one. I wish I had someone to teach me some skill sets that would be useful on the road. I’ve only ever been a pizza-maker & a veterinary assistant…2 skills sets that aren’t helpful for traveling.

Very cool! Interesting about the velcro,(I used to work in a fabric store), often people want to use it and in most cases it is not the best way to join two things. Staples, glue, sewing are usually better. And it is very expensive for a large quantity.

Looks a lot of interior fun, heah, small space strong colour – go for it.
Oh yes, stapling ceilings = good decision !
I have ancient memories of glueing carpety stuff that didn’t actually glue … on to the roof of a camper van: trying to hold it up with both hands whilst it fell down all around me, aaargh.
Velcro is awkward because you have to stick IT first before you use it to hold up something else. It loves to stick to itself but not other stuff …It is also the very devil to sew the hooky side.
    Ha, raw nerve memories :-))
Well done, you are seriously the industrious one

At the risk of going all new-age and spacy here, I’ll say this: Shreve, souls like you don’t come along very often. People these days are full of worry, greed, entitlement, and hypocrisy. You, on the other hand, are loving and creative and strong and brave and incredibly down to earth. I admire you more than I can say, Miss Stockton. :)

“last summer” link – but after making a big fuss over getting an assistant, you said not a word about her arrival or disappearance at the same time the stalker arrived on the scene. maybe if you don’t want to talk about stuff don’t link to it.

  54. mlaiuppa
    July 16th, 2011 @ 6:01 pm

    I love it.

Only one thing I would have done different.

I don’t know what the insulation level is to your trailer. If not much, I would have bought some batting by the roll and put that on the ceiling before putting the fabric over it and stapling. It would have been sort of quilted and puffy but I think the batting would help insulate.

Now you want a trick? Do you like wallpaper but don’t like the permanence or possible damage? Well, you can put up temporary wallpaper, like newspapers or giftwrap using…starch. Liquid starch like for the laundry. You can roll it on the walls, then put the paper up and roll or brush over it. When you want it gone, you just soak it with water and a sponge and peel it off and wash it down. You can do that with cutouts too. So if you have a design on a paper you can cut around it, apply some starch to the back, put it on a wall and then brush over it and let it dry.

That’s the only other thing I’d do. I’d decorate the walls with some random pictures cut out of magazines. Maybe fruit and vegetable pictures from seed packets around the kitchen area.

Oh, and I’d do curtains because I am not a morning person and the sun would wake me up way earlier than I would be prepared to wake up.

Yeah, not much of a camper. But I *do* own a tent. Brand new never used. It attaches to the hatch of my car. I bought it after Katrina, just in case I ever needed to evacuate my house. My dog would be coming with me so I wanted to be prepared to camp if no shelter would take us both.

What’s on the floor? Linoleum? Peel and stick?

Do the appliances and electrical work?

    Propane stove/oven?

i love it that you used fabric on the ceiling.
i’ve lived in the same house for many years (and so have had plenty of time for ‘proper’ upgrades) but i still enjoy the fabric i have stapled up in some places, so it stays.
and is that a shelf i see above the bed? looks like kitty territory to me.

A ~ Nope…. I took those ‘before’ pics two months ago. She lived in the trailer but did nothing to alter it. For those wondering why I’ve not done a followup post on The Assistant (March – May 2010), everything that needs to be said has been said in what’s not been said, if you get what I’m sayin.

I absolutely love the trailer, it is a dream of mine to get one and fix up. My only question is do you have any exterior shots? I keep looking for an old trailer and I’d love to see the outside of it and if it has a name and manufacturer. I spend WAY too much time on Craigslist looking for a fixer upper gem like that. I remember that about two years ago you found a help who I think lived in a trailer. Was it this one and what became of her? Is she still living near you?

    Greetings, Lilli

Hi, speaking of trailers: whatever happened to the young woman that was living in a trailer working with you? Did I miss that?

    Have a glorious summer!

i LOVE vintage and unusual fabrics!!! many years ago, i was in design school in Sacramento and we took a field trip to San Francisco to attend a fashion show. as a side trip we went down to the wharf and got to browse in all the fabric warehouse stores….all types of imported silks, rayon, wools cottons off all textures and colors.. it was like a rainbow explosion!! even today, one of my favorite things is to browse fabric stores or antique stores looking at fabric!!
your trailer is very cool and the colors are amazing!

holy SMOKES, Shreve! this is FANTASTIC! i love the colors, so so so much.

the weeny kitchen in bright raspberry is my favorite. It looks like a toy kitchen. Like Barbie should be cooking there. If Barbie ever cooked (doubtful).

    I LOVE IT!

scrumptious – what jill of all trades you are! How exciting spending time up in a meadow with your farmily — did you bring any CDs or such? Lots of books? Make sure you catch the Perseid meteor shower Aug 11-12, should be brilliant from your little corner of the earth.

Your summer home is beautiful!! With all your other talents I believe you would be a great weaver. Your could make your own loom, collect scraps of yarn, ribbons, feathers, etc. Look around the woods and see what you can find to weave. It is a good winter project. Have a great summer. Jeano

When I was a kid, riding my bicycle in the street I saw something in the road, big, fluttering and a bird trying to take it away. I went over, curious, it was a luna moth, I had never seen one and to date, I am 62, I have only seen maybe one or two more. The bird flew off leaving the now tired and tattered moth in the road. I gently picked it up so as to not damage the already bitten wings and let it just stay in my hand resting. When it seemed like it was stronger I cautiously, carefully hefted it into the sky. As it staggered into flight I smiled, then out of no where a huge blue jay came and picked it right out of the air. I have never forgotten this or the lesson attached.

This is amazing! I am really inspired to start on my little 1951 Trotwood now.

I love the fabric and the idea of it on the ceiling. I’d already decided on red cupboards for mine. Brilliant:)

May I ask what you ended up putting on the floor?

I often visit your website and have noticed that you don’t update it often. More frequent updates will give your website
higher authority & rank in google. I know that writing posts
takes a lot of time, but you can always help yourself with
miftolo’s tools which will shorten the time of creating an article to a couple of seconds.
