Another Smattering

☆ October 2, 2012

The Q&A sesh continues… {part I, part II, part III}

Do you keep a journal?
Not really.  I write when I have to get something out of me or when I have to figure something out.  But it’s usually on scraps of paper and old envelopes which I then toss in a shoebox.

If you had to live off the grid, what type of energy source do you prefer – solar or wind?
Solar.  If you’re powered by your own windmill, it means it’s windy, and I do not like wind.

What is your favorite spice?
A wink from Mike.

You have to live the rest of your life in a museum. Which of the world’s museums do you choose and why.
The Museum of Natural History in New York. When I was a starving artist I prioritized an annual museum pass over food. I love that place.

For some reason this idea came to my mind today so thought I would share it with you although your experience was one of the funniest posts ever. Of course it is about the charcoal poultice and the problem (ha ha) of keeping an animal still while it hardens. Couldn’t you just load some cheese cloth with the charcoal and tie it on? Not so much fun for us or said male animal, but easier for you.
I don’t know that that would work ~ imagine gooping it on and tying it on your ankle and then walking around.  I think it would slip unless you had it dangerously tight.

I really miss the handwritten posts from last summer.
Then I shall do some handwritten posts just for the fun of it!

if Charlie hears a coyote- what is his reaction?
No reaction ~ never once.  It’s like it doesn’t register to him that coyotes are related to him.  But if a cat meows, he will start to howl.

Is Charlie neutered?
Yep.  It’s detailed in the book ~ the how’s and why’s.

This has been my first real summer out west (Idaho), and the wildfires have been horrible. What kinds of plans do ranchers make for times such as this? Packing up our photos and cats seems bad enough, but being responsible for a farmily such as yours would fill me with worry.
I asked around for this one, which confirmed what I suspected.  To quote one rancher: “Hope like hell it doesn’t happen.”  There’s really no way to plan.  Everyone carries fencing pliers in their truck and will cut fences if need be.  Cut fences, let the animals run, and sort it out later.

Does Mike still work for the vile and misnamed USDA Wildlife Services agency that kills our native wildlife, using our tax dollars, on our lands? I hope not!
No ~ I wrote a bit about that here.

Do you like chocolate milk? thought i’d give you an easy one ;)
Thank you!  I actually don’t.

What would your ideal future look like?
There’s a fine line between visualization and setting goals, and becoming rigid and self-sabatoging…. I try not to think about an “ideal future,” simply because I would never have conjured any of my present!

If you had to get a job, what would you want to do?
I have a job.

I would love to see a photo of the short do!!
OK FINE I’LL THINK ABOUT IT!

Don’t show us your haircut if you don’t want to. I was quite moved by your comment that none of us “out here” know what your head looks like right now. I think you do marvelously, uniquely well at negotiating your public/private space. So I support you in resisting the pressure.

Now, if you decide one day, “My hair rocks and I want to share it!” that’s fine. I’ll definitely love seeing it! But don’t do it because your fans “demand” it.

    xoxo

I am really enjoying your answers to some of the personal and not-so-personal questions we have posed. I suppose in some sense, we, your fans, are like Charlie hovering around Eli… just wanting some attention; a ‘look’ at your thoughts and dreams… your ‘new hair cut. Thank you for sharing. :)

“Which of the world’s museums do you choose and why.

Smiles. Me, too. My mom and I were dirt poor when I was a kid, but so many things were free way back then in the stone age. Since we lived within walking distance, we spent many a weekend wandering the halls of the museum. I practically grew up there and have very, very fond memories of my time there. I especially loved the children’s museum, where we got to learn about, and handle, skunks, snakes, frogs…ah, the good old days (or, rather, the good young days), when I had the stamina to wander through museums for hours and hours and never get tired of any of them, when all of them were within walking distance (yes, even across Central Park), and all were open free to the public.

Thanks to whomever asked the question and thanks to you, Shreve, for your answer. You’ve both brought back happy memories and made my day!

What Leslie said: I admire your dedication to maintaining you and your farmily’s privacy while sharing the beauty of your life with the rest of us who aren’t so lucky. Follow your instincts, your heart and do what feels right for you – not what your fans want.

Ditto what Leslie and Ana said :)

I will be honest, I don’t really care what your hair looks like Shreve. You can dye it purple with pink highlights and I would still read your blog. I would rather see pictures of Fiona, Maia, Daisy, Charlie, the cats, the horses, and the rest of the farmily!

I echo all of the above comments and add LOL! You are quite adept at addressing the too-personal questions, and the just plain dumb ones. And I always get a chuckle. Thank you!

Since Charlie doesn’t respond to other coyotes, does he see them as a predator as Eli and the other cats do? And I second more “farmily” pictures over one of you.

Don’t care about your hair either. And since you’ve been stalked once already, I think it makes sense not to post many photos of yourself.

But, if there were a fire, I’m thinking you’d take Charlie with you in the truck right, and Eli and the kitties? OMG. What a trip that would be! Hope you’ve invested in some travel kennels!

    This has been fun!

    Dear Shreve,

I also enjoy reading your succinct responses, and I appreciate the time and thought you have spent answering so many questions.

There was a question about a job, and it reminded me of when I was a ballet dancer (eons ago). Back then I was sometimes asked by “normal people” what I did “during the daytime”. ;)

Sometimes what we do for a living is just a bit beyond the realm of what is known in larger or just different circles.

Here’s hoping you are never faced with a wildfire which forces you to cut fences and flee.

Thanks Shreve – I’ve really enjoyed these posts too !
Unrelated to this post but I think you might enjoy – a website called “Dog Shaming” where you take a photo of your dog and what they’ve done/broken/shredded – with a confession sign. You could take a pic of Chloe with a sign reading “I cornered a skunk in my mom’s house” :-)

    @Calico…
I love that site… makes my dogs look like saints!

Love the sidebar comment about Romney and debate and I’m a Canadian lol.

I vote for no head shot either, you have thick hair unlike myself and I would be so jealous.

I did a double take over the job question (not that my question was any better) but that one irks me because stay at home moms get asked that one more than anyone in the world. It’s the biggest unpaid job in the world. I guess you have fun at your job so it doesn’t seem like work!

Shreve, thank you for stating that you do, indeed, have a job! i want people to think this question over (a little more clearly) before they ask. ♥

Enjoyed this Q&A very much. And I sincerely hope some day in the future Robert Redford does direct a movie of your book. The royalties just might get you that boat!

This is my favorite installment yet!! Love the easy question! Giggling at the end hearing your tone of voice! I am so happy to see Leslie’s post immediately after, and then all the posts that follow. I agree. The words “out there” rang in my head, a bit haunting. Personally you look SO adorable in the pixie cut I imagine you with, I don’t need to see the real thing. Thank you for hand written notes!

Hi Shreveport (hehe, my iPad autocorrected your name…what’s a Shreveport?)
Question: many moons back you wrote about hiring a young woman to help you with some chores. What ever happened to her?
    Thanks!
    Love reading about your adventures!

As a young child in the Bronx, I absolutely loved the Museum of Natural History. I think it is one of the most wonderful places in the world.

I admire you tremendously and think that you are one of the most interesting persons that I know of. Very best wishes to you.

    Hi Shreve,
    Are you still taking questions?
I would like to ask how awesome is Bethany and that beautiful truck she drives? I admire her lifestyle and career choice. You two seem to have common interests?
    Thanks for your time.
    XO

#19 ~ Shreveport is a town in Louisiana where LOTS of gambling goes on.

Love all the answers and enjoying your blog totally!!

Could you repost or link to the post you wrote about dealing with/confronting fear (taking risks)? I hope that’s enough detail to jog your memory. I loved that post and had it saved, but misplaced it!

Thanks for sharing yourself with us… I am a long time reader and lurker – I simply wish to respect your privacy but love reading about you and your life.
