33 & 3

☆ April 13, 2010

moi

Wow.  Thank you all for all the beautiful birthday wishes yesterday ~ Charlie lapped them up and said, “well, yesss,” while I was truly humbled.  The care from afar… made me tear up, dammit!  And makes me want to do more work, for you, to share with you.

ALSO.  Where did this whole “aging is a horrible thing” come from?  I adore getting older.  Young’uns out there, know this: the twenties are hella fun but the thirties… oh, so much greater.  The thirties are something to look forward to.

And a very happy birthday to you.

You are right, each decade brings more. But at this point I look back and think, oh if I only had the energy and agility of my thirties, now that I know what knowledge and imagination the sixties have brought me.

    Love the new blog!

AMEN to that. I’m turning 34 in a couple of weeks and want to let everyone in on a little secret – life gets BETTER as you get older! Don’t know where the opposite myth has come from! I am loving every minute of my thirties and glad you are too.

    Happy Birthday to you both!!!!!

I agree with your 30’s comment. I’ve made the same comment to younger coworkers. As long as I’m feeling good and having fun I don’t care what the number is! I’m enjoying my thirties so much more than I ever did my twenties. Happy birthday to you.

Well that is a good thing to hear!! I’m 25 turning 26 this year and my friend and I just had a conversation yesterday about the fears of being closer to 30 now then 20! Good to hear things get better with age, just like wine :)

40s…not so much! All of a sudden my body changed, like overnight! I’m learning to accept it, but it’s been very depressing. I have “old hands” now, age-spotted face, gray kinky frizzy hairs, losing weight requires Herculean effort, and have to remove hair from places I never knew it could grow. On the upside, I’m alive, I’ve got skills, and I’ve learned a lot so far in life. :) Could be worse, I suppose.

And, as someone who just turned the big 4-0… it does keep getting better! :o)

Happiest wishes to you both- and sending lots of love and hope for a wonderful year ahead!

Getting older isn’t a negative by any means. However, just be sure you appreciate where things are at on your body now and how you look and feel.

When you get into your 40’s things just start changing even if you are taking care of yourself. And some changes just are not necessarily good ones. :)

Belated Happy Birthday to both you and Charlie. Thank you again for sharing your lives with us!

Happy birthday!!! And I agree with you about “aging” – it’s awesome! I just turned 42 and let me tell you, if my 40s are anything like my 30s, I don’t know if I can handle the happiness! It just keeps getting better!

Give Charlie an extra hug from us down here in Texas and scritch the ears of the rest of the farmily. We love you guys!!!

Ah, to be young and know what I know now!
    I’l be the big 5 – 0 next year.
I know I’m pretty content, I have my health, a loving partner, my family is all in decent health and I’m currently pleasantly occupied raising a family of 5 baby bunnies by hand. I even have a job that’s enjoyable when you tune out the chronic whiners.

I hear ya on the getting older thing. I turn 35 in 2 weeks.

I love it! I’m 24 and very much looking forward to my 30s. When I look at the people around me, it seems as if your 20s are sort of the time to feel yourself out and get to know who you really are, what you believe in, what you stand for, etc. But your 30s… so much better! By then you know yourself so much better and it seems as if people are just so much more comfortable in their own skin.
On my last birthday, my dad made a joke about how I was about to hit 25 and that I was starting to get old. Everyone was a bit taken aback when I proclaimed that I was looking forward to my 30th birthday :)

And can I just comment on how amazing it is that you turned 33 and Charlie 3! Repeating numbers are lovely signs :)

    it’s all relative….
i’m in my 60’s now, and i have to admit, it’s kind of scary. this unit does not work as well (or as comfortably) as it used to. but my visits to my mom in her nursing home make me seem pretty spry.
so i just try to remember to be thankful for what is. now.
happy birthday, and thanks for you and all that you give to all of us!!
love to you and all of yours.

    Happy 33rd, Shreve!

I agree, my twenties were all about “feeling out myself”, stumbling, falling, getting up again, and trying out a lot of paths that lead to nowhere. I have grown much more into myself the last few years. Still taking wrong paths, though, and still searching.

I turned 35 a half year ago, and I must say while I noticed only the slightest changes in my body around 30, they are more obvious now, at least to me. It is just weird to suddenly realize that my own body IS actually aging: it used to be this scary abstract concept that I could never quite relate to myself. On some level I believed that this wouldn’t apply to me…
Now I can relate the idea to myself, and I am slightly scared of the coming years and bigger changes happening.
What a challenge – to accept my body starting to age, and remaining comfortable with this. I feel like I just outgrew my teenage insecurities!

Sorry – this reads like quite the downer. Not meant to be. We grow with our challenges, and so far I can say, I’ll take my thirties over my twenties any day!

    Happy Birthday!
In my fifties, and, I must admit, petrified, looking back, wondering, re-evaluating, the journey continues with much more wisdom than the earlier years…getting older is frightening…the parts don’t work as well…the unknown is scary…grasping every moment to enjoy and savor on this journey to…..

Sending peace to your wonderful family of pets! Thank you for sharing the joy they bring with others!

The year I was 49, I absolutely hated the idea of turning 50 on my next birthday. It was a slow march of inevitability and then a magnificent discovery: turning 50 was wonderful! Suddenly I felt free in ways I would never have imagined. All pressure to achieve greatness ended and I could just be me. Life keeps getting better and better. Now I look forward now to turning 60, 70, and then 80.

Happy Birthday, Shreve and Charlie. You’re right, it just keeps getting better and life is such an adventure. I hate to be the Pollyanna, here, but I’m in my fifties and I look forward to everyday. If you don’t stop changing and growing, and I know you won’t, every age will be the prime of life.

Well, Happy Birthday lady. I totally agree! Besides, haven’t you heard, “the 40s are the new 20s”? Not sure what they say about the 30s except that is when women are in their prime! I’ll be 39 in June, and while most of my peers are dreading coming up on 40 I say, “bring it on!” I’m looking forward to it. Of course…it helps that my parents passed on their good jeans to me and I usually get penned at 26ish (thank you mom & dad)!

Happy Birthday Shreve and Charlie! I’m also turning 33 this year, and I dreaded the big 3-0, but things aren’t too bad now, despite not really being where I want to be in life. I’m also no where near getting married and having kids, and no where near knowing if I want to do either yet. Anyway, thanks for sharing your life with us and inspiring us everyday. =)

thirties are great. forties too. The aging thing gets bad at the 70s. You age several years overnight. Your body turns on you. The 50s and 60s are pretty good too. Maybe, like adolescence, the 70s are preparing you to leave home soon.

I have to agree with Kathy Grossman, the 70’s can be difficult as the mechanisms begin wearing out but I think how lucky I am to have seen 3/4ths of a century and realize I’ve reached a time of looking back rather than ahead….

Shreve, give Charlie’s ears a scratch for me, OK? Chip (Dog of Very Litle Brain) says Happy Birthday to you both and thanks for the elk antler!

I turned 45 last week and took a random vacation to a little town in Montana. I am ready to change my life, give up the rat race and find a new way of living. I have to say I would have not be as open to the new revelation until this birthday. I have to thank you, Shreve, it was your book, Daily Coyote, that started a subconscious shift in my thinking that allowed me to be open to the interesting stories and people I met in this small town in Montana. It was the best birthday ever.

Being that I just turned 55… from my perspective, I can say that the 40’s are REALLY GOOD! Thirties were good, but the 40’s – The best for ME so far. And I DO agree that we have to get over this aging thing. It is NATURAL, folks. Use it as incentive to live a real and genuine life, like Shreve is doing! No one knows how long they are going to be here, so live each day fully. (It’s an old cliché, but a true one, that’s why we still say it)

I just want to say how much I agree with everyone saying that your 20’s are for finding yourself, that is SO TRUE!! I’m 22 and just starting to figure out who I am, what I like, where I want to go in life and what I am tuly capable of.
Happy Birthday to you and Charlie, hope it was a great one.

Tearing up is good every now and then : ) You’ve given us so much sharing your life with Charlie in your book and your blogs – a great opportunity for us to learn about things we otherwise might never have learned. What a life you get to live.

We can always read “technical” books about coyotes, and such, but to hear first hand from one experiencing it is great. I love the other blog about the other critters too!

And good advice for the under 30 crowd – nothing wrong with getting older – just more to experience with each passing year!

Hope all the critters are enjoying a nice spring – it is spring there now isn’t it?

Oh just you wait, Shreve…the 50’s are where it’s at…I kid you not!! I may not be as thin as I was in my 30’s, and have more laugh wrinkles but I wouldn’t go back for anything…and OMG the you-know-what has never been better…you youngins’ will figure this out eventually lol…truly, it’s the best.
