I Swoon!
☆ October 27, 2010
My stonemason friend stopped by my house after a demolition job.
“You like rocks,” he said. “Here.”
Natural green glass, formed in the earth. Similar to obsidian but a gorgeous aquamarine. This piece is the size of a baby.
Giant clusters of crystals.
This color!
A huge hunk of dinosaur bone. Takes two hands to hold it.
Oh, the striations….
So beautiful.

Those are beautiful, Shreve. I have never seen anything like the aquamarine. When we walk along a beach on one of our northern lakes, we also have to be on the lookout for the unusual rocks along the lake shore. But none quiet so beautiful as these. Thank you for sharing with us.

I just died looking at all of this. Amazing rock overload! The first one… a real turquoise monster! ;)
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:41 am
These ‘rocks’ truly show the beauty of things that can be found on this world of ours, nature really cannot be excelled.
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:42 am
Envy, jealousy, admiration…
The first rock looks like hail is suspended in it
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:42 am

“Scuse me, I had to take a moment to wipe away tears over such exquisite beauty. I hardly ever cry!
“You like rocks,” he said. “Here.” LOVE it!
I do believe you’re well-loved and cared for up there: few words, big actions. Wonder if you have a lot of friends stopping by for all kinds of reasons – yep, Wyoming version of circling the wagons.
October 27th, 2010 @ 1:15 pm
My grandparents used to go to Wyoming, Montana and all over the west in search of rocks and dinosaur bones. The once found a tricepatops skull in excellant condition. I used to love when he would tumble the rocks in the polisher and the beautiful colors that nature provides.
October 27th, 2010 @ 1:16 pm
Oooh – absolutely yummy! I love them all, but the aquamarine glass is just spectacular. Lucky you!
October 27th, 2010 @ 1:38 pm
I guessed it was glass but the inclusions and fractures had me stumped.
Lovely, lovely.
I’ve collected some rocks over the years as well. I have a wonderful slab of Botswana agate with a hole in the middle I made into a clock for my bathroom.
I go to the local gem and mineral show and buy natural stone beads and string my own necklaces.
October 27th, 2010 @ 1:50 pm
Oh, I am envious! Altogether lovely!
October 27th, 2010 @ 1:53 pm
Stunning! :)
October 27th, 2010 @ 2:19 pm
I am sooo jealous! I’m a huge rockhound, and would LOVE to have those in my collection! :)
October 27th, 2010 @ 2:20 pm
U may need to take a moment to wipe this geologist’s drool off of your page! Gorgeous!
October 27th, 2010 @ 2:35 pm
Tell your friend he ROCKS !
October 27th, 2010 @ 2:46 pm
Shreve, that is awesomely gorgeous. Congratulations — you’re lucky to have it!

The aquamarine is awesome!
October 27th, 2010 @ 3:37 pm
oooh I want lots of little pieces of the blue one to wire wrap and wear. :P
October 27th, 2010 @ 3:42 pm
Gorgeous obsidian! My Dad got me interested in rock collecting when I was a kid, and while I’ve drifted away from it considerably, I am so grateful that he taught me how to appreciate how beautiful rocks truly are.
October 27th, 2010 @ 3:43 pm
*Obsidian-like rock. :)
October 27th, 2010 @ 3:55 pm
Absolutely gorgeous and amazing!
October 27th, 2010 @ 4:10 pm
OMG!! Jealous jealous jealous!!! Especially of the turquoise glass! I simply LOVE rocks and still have all the ones I collected from Wyoming as a kid (some 40 years ago LOL!) What treasures!!! Enjoy!
October 27th, 2010 @ 4:50 pm
holy smokes!
does the first “rock” (the translucent turquoise one) contain flowers, like the insects that can be found in amber?
October 27th, 2010 @ 6:11 pm
Even more lovely than those crystals is the generosity behind them. With what you’ve been and are still going through, it’s great that you have such friends.
I have many “found” gifts that friends have given me. Though I may be far from the givers, I look at those things and feel warmed.
October 27th, 2010 @ 6:27 pm
Wonderful! Those are beautiful rocks.
My husband and I knew we were made for each other partly because we discovered soon after meeting that we both had rock collections started when we were kids. So did our parents (and in my case, a great grandfather who was a ‘natural scientist’-they didn’t specialize back then). We have everything from hunks of rocks to polished rocks and even two large (meaning 20-25 lb) geodes that I lugged back to Chicago from my parents’ house when my Mother moved out.
When we moved to our condo 26 years ago the movers asked, ‘What’s in these boxes marked rocks? They’re not really rocks, right?” We said, yes, they are and got a startled “You mean to tell me I’m lugging rocks up three flights of stairs??!!” We just had to grin and offer them some ice water to drink (and a good tip at the end of the move!)
October 27th, 2010 @ 6:32 pm
holy moly! I approve of this post.
October 27th, 2010 @ 6:36 pm
Beautiful : )
October 27th, 2010 @ 7:14 pm

October 27th, 2010 @ 7:52 pm
As a fellow rock geek, I am in awe of your haul!
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:09 pm
My jaw just hit the FLOOR.
All of your friends are awesome; however, you already know this. Hence why these people are your friends.
I am SO jealous! Don’t let Charlie knock over any of these beauties with that disastrous tail of his! Especially that glass- my goodness, that hunk of glass makes me aquamarine with envy! D:
Also, are those white spots in the glass crystalline and jagged, or smooth like blobs of wax in a lava-lamp?
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:32 pm
That natural glass is GORGEOUS. *jealous*
October 27th, 2010 @ 9:37 pm
They are all beautiful but I’m partial to the first one. It is glorious.
October 28th, 2010 @ 12:35 am
Oh my, now that glassy rock is just freakin awesome!
Maybe I could trade you some rocks from the North Shore of Lake Superior for some antler pieces? My dogs can’t chew rocks. lol And as pretty as they are, I have to refrain from bringing them home in the quantity I would like. At least until I have room for a private beach! But they are gorgeous and smooth, tumbled by the pounding the lake gives them against the iron ore shoreline.
October 28th, 2010 @ 1:09 am
Do not let that man near me, I would keep him and never send him back to you….
I LOVE ROCKS!! And those are some spectacular ones!
Aquamarine is not only my birthstone, it is my favorite color! Tell him I said WELL DONE!
October 28th, 2010 @ 6:08 am
Ohhhh…. ‘Gazing Glass’ – could be trance inducing.
Is the yellow/orange/gold one Citrine in Quartz? I have a smaller piece that displays similar color.
October 28th, 2010 @ 6:30 am
Love those striations!
October 28th, 2010 @ 7:05 am
I love collecting rocks! I brought back a small selection from the shore of Nova Scotia when I went two summers ago. I’m so jealous that he gave you those! :)
October 28th, 2010 @ 8:54 am
I’ve always loved rocks too. I had no idea that the first picture was even possible!
October 28th, 2010 @ 9:14 am
You are truly blessed to have friends that bring such wonderful gifts to you and we are blessed that you share them with us. I am so thankful to my daughter for giving me your book thus leading me to this site.
October 28th, 2010 @ 11:19 am
I’m jealous too! *L* I collected rocks as a kid and I still fill my pockets when I’m out walking, wherever I go. These are GORGEOUS!

WOW, this is incredible.
October 29th, 2010 @ 1:24 pm
They are absolutely STUNNING! It’s hard to imagine that first piece is the size of a baby. And a dinosaur bone?? How cool.
October 30th, 2010 @ 10:36 am
It’s amazing what the earth can surprise us with.
I’m envious of the company you keep!
October 30th, 2010 @ 7:27 pm
I’m a jeweler, and cheerfully drooling over here.
(I finally decided to start commenting. I stumbled across Daily Coyote because I have a coyote-looking dog, and was looking some things up. No worries, she’s an Alaskan Husky, not a wild critter, but Charlie’s feline characteristics remind me strongly of my Aiko. I trucked over here from DC because I like watching folks who work with their hands, whatever their profession. And I’m a frugality freak, so that was another draw.)
October 31st, 2010 @ 8:12 am
Oh Shreve how lucky you are to live in a place where all that is beautiful is just there. The aquamarine crystal is gorgeous and they all are spectacular.
October 31st, 2010 @ 3:55 pm
those are so neat. i need a stonemason friend.
November 1st, 2010 @ 10:45 am
Jealous. LOL! They are BEAUTIFUL!
November 1st, 2010 @ 11:18 am
WOW! Love them! I am quite envious right now :)
November 3rd, 2010 @ 11:23 am
I have my minor in geology and once brought my favorite chunk of green glass to a tenured geology professor. He simply couldn’t identify it. At a loss for what it could be, he argued that the glass chunk must be man-made. Manufactured my foot! It’s naturally beautiful!
February 16th, 2011 @ 9:41 am
I’m a rock hound too! i drag them back from all over the world. LOL.
September 28th, 2012 @ 7:23 am
