The snake may have been conflated with removing a kind of filarial worm that lives under the skin. It was done by winding it around a stick as you pulled it out of the body.

Geeeee Susssss!!!! I thought bears were going to be the problem. Knee high boots are in order for the wardrobe accessory Shreve, hip waders would be even better. I hope it was not near to the lollipop wagon ( I thought that description “the inside of a lollipop” was the best ever). Does anyone know of a deterrent to keep snakes away? Wrapping them around a staff seems like a good idea.
I was all ready to tell you it’s the staff of Cadeceus, but upon Wikipedia-ing that, I learned your EMT pin actually depicts the rod of Asclepius (as your reader, above, told you). The Wikipedia entry for the rod has a good explanation of why a snake. Anyhow, I learned more about something we see almost every day, and so I thank you for asking your very good question!

Asclepius, Greek god of healing. Minoan Snake Goddesses. Ouroboros, symbolizing the “eternal return.” Snakes are ancient symbols of healing and re-birth. They shed their skin regularly, and before that, some will become listless and not move around a whole lot. The skin also covers their eyes (which is why they don’t blink) and the old skin tends to look dull and hazy, making them look dead (combined with the not moving around factor). Once the skin is shed, shiny new snake = re-birth. Some also go underground in great groups (gaggles? flocks? clutches?) and hibernate together, then emerge in fantastic, writhing masses in the springtime. Springtime is always a time of re-birth, returning from the dead of winter. But I think it has more to do with emerging from old skin, since many species hibernate.

I just looked up ‘snake’ in the “Medicine Cards” book by Sams and Carson. Interesting stuff … in part, they say, “Thoth, the Alantean who later returned as Hermes and was the father of alchemy, used the symbology of two snakes intertwining around a sword to represent healing”.
What also struck me in what they wrote about snake medicine is, “It is the energy of wholeness, cosmic consciousness, and the ability to experience anything willingly and without resistance”. Sounds like it’s right in line with your adventurous spirit, eh?

Rattlesnakes do offer a warning and would prefer (anthropomorphizing here) to not waste their venom which requires energy to produce. If the snakes are close to camp and you fear for your critters who might think the snake an interesting play thing go ahead and kill the critters. You won’t be threatening the species and you can eat them or feed them to the carnivores/omnivores in your farmily (in the interest of making the best use of an animal whose life you have taken.) Of course if you killed it and left it somewhere I imagine some other critter would swoop in to enjoy an easily acquired meal.

Ah, lovely people! You have gotten such wonderful input from other commenters already! I suppose the only other interesting point that I have yet to see mentioned are the roots of the word viper: alive and to birth. Many people mistake the placement of a viper as the placement of any general snake but there is a distinct difference…
The idea that snakes are evil seems to be a relatively modern contraption or at least contrived out of fear and a lack of respect and is propagated by “western” ideals, which are not necessarily bad because a snake bite can maim or kill and the easiest way to not get bit is to avoid snakes altogether.
Thanks for this wonderful food for thought and setting us all on this wild-snake chase! No matter what connotations humanity may put upon an animal; no matter what symbolism we may assign to it ancient or otherwise, the animals deserve to be themselves and respected. You accomplish this wonderfully in your life and lead others to do so. Thank you!

if the top photo is any indication of the local fauna, either you should have some anti-venom stuff handy, or make lots of sturdy boots in three sizes(dogs, cats and cows).
All joking aside, snakes will avoid confrontation if at all possible.
Either your camper (if that’s where you saw it)is parked on one of its regular paths, or perhaps Chloe chased it out of the grass. She is not afraid of snakes. Your article on her and the snake proved that.

snakes being the symbol of evil isn’t only a western thing but that hasn’t helped; consider the example given in the post where it’s not so — chinese astrology. off the top of my head they represent wisdom, reincarnation, and longevity in many asian cultures, china included.
but yes, the EMT symbol is the staff of aesclepius. interesting fact: aesclepius/ophiuchus is often considered the thirteenth zodiac symbol.

Snakes in Tucson too, just yesterday on my front porch a four foot black racer tried to strike my friend while she was putting the key in the door. Yes, black racers are non-venomous, but they are very vicious if cornered and will bite and strike repeatedly if threatened. The wonderful guys from NW fire dept. came out and ran it off my doorstep. Yes, they were laughing at us, but they said we did the right thing. Whew!!

If you haven’t already done so, you might consider stuffing steal wool around all the opening in the trailer floors or cupboard, if there are any. Trailers are great “hiding” places for critters, such as mice and of course, mice make great snacks for snakes! Sure wouldn’t want you to find one inside the lollipop with you and other members of the farmily!!

A vaccine is available for rattlesnake bites for your animals. One shot, then a boosted, then annually after that. I’ve also heard that having a pig keeps snakes away. My dogs all have gotten the shots and haven’t seen a rattler since I got my pig.

Rattles are good. I’ve stepped on many silent snakes, but never a rattler.
In the Santa Monica Mountains, a heavily-used hiking area, noisy rattlers are quickly killed. Those rattlers that may be genetically inclined to be less noisy tend to escape.

Snakes shed their skins and renew themselves. In many cultures they are considered wise; to have a snake lick your ears meant that you could understand the speech of all living things. And most snakes are beneficial, killing and removing vermin such as mice and rats.

I learned a technique for snake proofing your farmily, this worked on all of my dogs. I am always picking up and examining things, I have no snake phobia and know to give rattlers a wide birth. I had a dog who loved to play with sticks, one day I found a 1 1/2′ garden snake and picked it up, it promptly pooped on me (If I was grabbed by the equivalent of a 30 story monster that would be MY first reaction) anyway I showed the snake to the dog and it promptly bit her on the nose, not enough to hurt just startle. She avoided snakes there after! Same story with my next dog.

Asclepius was he son of Apollo and is associated with medicine. The snake and rod used to be separate symbols but were combined as some point. Perhaps because of the similarity to the Caduceus, which is sometimes used erroneously in the U.S. as a medical symbol.
The snake may have something to do with the duel outcome in medicine that you can heal or kill, or because snakes shed their skin it is a symbol of healing or rejuvenation. The staff may represent the walking stick of itinerant physicians. Pharmakon can mean drug, medicine and poison.
There is also a biblical reference. (Numbers 21:6-9).
Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
It isn’t that unusual for biblical and mythological origins to be combined. Just look at some of our holidays.
A direct representation is of ancient traditional treatment of Guinea Worm (Dracunculus medinensis), one of the longest nematodes infecting humans. The females can be up to 30 inches long. The worm peeks out of ulcerous blisters to lay eggs, when the wound is placed in water to cool and soothe it. The practitioner would pull the worm out slowly by winding it around a stick. It’s mostly found in Africa and India. You get it from drinking stagnant water. Eradication is progressing well. In 1985 3.5 million cases were reported annually, by 2008 that number had dropped to 5,000. It can be prevented by filtering and boiling water.
The confusion of the Rod of Asclepius with the caduceus is because the U.S. Army Medical Corps uses the caduceus as it’s symbol. Ironic that the caduceus has historical associations with commerce, theft, deception, and death.

P.S.: And the Thrakians made medicines out of snakes. Also, they symbolized youth, because of the shedding of their skin. And the Thrakians admired their vigilance and mildness (they only had non-poisonous ones in their temples) so they were seen has possessing the virtues a healer should have.

Oh, Crotalus! Rattlesnakes are such beautiful creatures, and it’s sad that this one had to meet the end of it’s life at the hands of a human. I can totally understand that you wanted to protect the farmily, though, but I always hate to see any snake killed.
I’ve always been bitter about my father killing Rattlers, seeing as the Eastern Diamondback populations in my area are starting to dwindle. Remember that their skins can serve a multitude of purposes and that their flesh is very much edible! If you go to prepare one to eat, I would remove the head with a hoe or a machete to avoid being bitten. The brain, unless completely destroyed, will continue to send out signals for hours so that the creature could still open it’s mouth and nip you- no fault of the individual animal, but of her still-firing nerves.
On another note, I love the hand-written approach to blogging. Nothing feels better than writing down your thoughts. And you’ve inspired me to look into living out of a trailer instead of a dorm or apartment when I go off to university!

If it’s any consolation, rattlesnakes (at least here in Arizona) are fairly shy–generally they’ll hear you coming and leave before you get there. And (as I’m sure you know) they’re good critters; they eat vermin. I’ve been hiking and climbing out here for well over a decade and can count on one hand the “snake encounters” I’ve had. That said… anything might bite when startled or cornered, so do be careful. : ) And yes, the sound of rattlesnake rattles will turn one’s blood immediately to ICE WATER, no matter how benign they seem. : D

I first have to say that I agree with Amber. Since we are the same age, I’m also a snake, so I thought this post was very interesting. I really like that you now take pictures of your written word, it seems apt to the site, and makes it much more interactive for some reason. Thank you for asking about the medical snake wrapped around the staff. I learned today(since I looked it up) that the rod of Asclepius is the correct symbol to use, and the Cadueus (the symbol with two snakes and wings)is not used correctly in a medical setting. I always thought it was the other way around. Though when I was studying to be a vet tech, I learned the veterinarian symbol was rod of Asclepius with a V in front of it. I love your blog and was so glad to hear that the farmily keeps growing. =)
No snake advice or history here. Just loving reading your blog updates via a pad-of-paper-notes. Such a surprising relief to the eyes. Now I should really stop reading blogs for the night, right?!

Totally unrelated to snakes; I just read your tweet about holding a humming bird – I have also held a humming bird! Magic! I rescued mine from a screened-in porch. I would love to hear how you found one in your hands.
I always thought snakes were associtated with medicine because they taught us the “injection”
factor. Also last year I killed the 10th rattlesnake at my home. I have too many animals to allow them to stay and it’s too dangerous to relocate them as some people like to do. I caught a hummer several days ago in my greenhouse. I took all the cob webs off of his feet and wings and set him free.
Wow. We have those too. So far I haven’t screamed- we’ve chatted. Another aspect of snake as medicine is: there’s cure in what can seem to be poison/too frightening/etc. Homeopathy uses many remedies to cure that are actually composed of the thing itself- arsenic, for example. Bee stingers. GREATLY diluted of course. Nietszche said, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Since snake represents wisdom? We’re often afraid of our own knowledge/radiance/whatever, and that keeps us out of balance.

@Roger…I am not sure where you have done your research, but by stating that “Spiritually speaking the Serpent always represents evil……………………. always” you are mistaken. In some spiritual belief systems, the snake represents sexuality, potency, and psychic energies. In others, the snake is a guard, such as the depictions of the Buddha supported and shielded by Nāga (deities in the form of snakes. There are in fact many different ideas as to what the snake represents. The snake as a representation of evil is a much more recent belief than many others around the world that see the snake as a beneficent being. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that because in your beliefs the snake is seen as evil that this is always the case.

Oh Shreve, I have to share this story with you!!! When I was a kid we moved from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale in 1969, that Summer I was 9 & 1/2. Until that time I’d grown up in the city mostly but one of my uncles had a horse ranch where I spent alot of time and I’d also taken many trips with my dad and uncles into the Everglades….sooo I’d learned alot about snakes including how to tell the poisonous ones from the nonpoisonous ones! My family bought 10 acres out in the middle of nowhere back then and during that Summer we cleared alot of the land to make pasture and we put up fencing for our horses and calves. One day as I rode on the front of a huge mower that my stepdad had borrowed, rake in hand to help keep the debree off the deck as he mowed a huge rattlesnake landed right at my feet!!!! I let out a scream and my stepdad quickly yanked me up from the deck by my t-shirt and pulled me onto his lap! He then grabbed the rake that I’d dropped and pulverized the rattlers head to kill it…so we thought!!! We quit for the day drove the mower with the snake on the deck back up to the house. Excitedly we told our story to the rest of the family and then my stepdad told us about how the snake was still dangerous and not to touch it because of the fangs and venom and the rattle too, then he hung the snake over a sawhorse in our yard. He planned to have it skinned and mounted as it was so huge and was a beautiful Eastern Diamond back!!! Well the next morning he looked outside our glass sliding doors very early before any of the rest of us were up and the snake was gone!!! He slid the door open and just as he went to step outside, he heard a faint rattle, looked down and the snake was laying on the patio just below the door track!!! Of course the rest of us woke up to him shooting the snake until it’s head came completely off it’s body!!! He truly believed that snake was coming to get him and I truly don’t know how it had survived the beating he’d given it with the rake the day before and was still able to slither about 20 feet up to our door!!! He did have the skin mounted afterall and oh how he loved to tell that story over and over to anyone that would listen….for many years to come! ;) have a wonderful day!, jo

Hey, I’m with Indie (Indiana Jones): “Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?” I can handle spiders and all sorts of other dangers, but I’m positively phobic about snakes. Sorry, snake lovers, but I’m going to repeat what I posted earlier: “…and bring bullets.”
I’ve heard of various snake repellents, some of which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly, but alas and alack, no one has proven that they work, and for me anyway, I’d have a heck of a time getting all those vats and vats of it rolled up the mountain. I’m sure I’d get a bulk discount, though. Ha.

Two months ago at Geology Field Camp, while we were in Elk Basin (on the border of Wyoming and Montana, about 20 miles north of Powell, WY) the boys KILLED AND ATE a rattlesnake! It struck at the wrong guy (a hunter from Minnesota). He got it down, passed it to two other guys, and then cut its head off. They cooked it up at the dorm with onions that stunk the place up. It’s still a bit shocking to me. I saw its skin in the common room back at the dorms, so I know this is true. Just about scared the crap out of me when I went in to clean my water bottle that night.
I figured out rattlers strike at the second person to walk by — so never follow directly in someone’s footsteps, but over by a at least a few feet. I think that’s why I never saw one, even running in knee-high vegetation. Instead, I had the My Little Pony version of Elk basin, complete with antelope, butterflies, frolicking birds, a wall of bird nests, and a bunny or two. <3

Asclepius, Greek god of healing. Minoan Snake Goddesses. Ouroboros, symbolizing the “eternal return.” Snakes are ancient symbols of healing and re-birth. They shed their skin regularly, and before that, some will become listless and not move around a whole lot. The skin also covers their eyes (which is why they don’t blink) and the old skin tends to look dull and hazy, making them look dead (combined with the not moving around factor). Once the skin is shed, shiny new snake = re-birth. Some also go underground in great groups (gaggles? flocks? clutches?) and hibernate together, then emerge in fantastic, writhing masses in the springtime. Springtime is always a time of re-birth, returning from the dead of winter. But I think it has more to do with emerging from old skin, since many species hibernate.

I just looked up ‘snake’ in the “Medicine Cards” book by Sams and Carson. Interesting stuff … in part, they say, “Thoth, the Alantean who later returned as Hermes and was the father of alchemy, used the symbology of two snakes intertwining around a sword to represent healing”.
What also struck me in what they wrote about snake medicine is, “It is the energy of wholeness, cosmic consciousness, and the ability to experience anything willingly and without resistance”. Sounds like it’s right in line with your adventurous spirit, eh?

Rattlesnakes do offer a warning and would prefer (anthropomorphizing here) to not waste their venom which requires energy to produce. If the snakes are close to camp and you fear for your critters who might think the snake an interesting play thing go ahead and kill the critters. You won’t be threatening the species and you can eat them or feed them to the carnivores/omnivores in your farmily (in the interest of making the best use of an animal whose life you have taken.) Of course if you killed it and left it somewhere I imagine some other critter would swoop in to enjoy an easily acquired meal.

Ah, lovely people! You have gotten such wonderful input from other commenters already! I suppose the only other interesting point that I have yet to see mentioned are the roots of the word viper: alive and to birth. Many people mistake the placement of a viper as the placement of any general snake but there is a distinct difference…
The idea that snakes are evil seems to be a relatively modern contraption or at least contrived out of fear and a lack of respect and is propagated by “western” ideals, which are not necessarily bad because a snake bite can maim or kill and the easiest way to not get bit is to avoid snakes altogether.
Thanks for this wonderful food for thought and setting us all on this wild-snake chase! No matter what connotations humanity may put upon an animal; no matter what symbolism we may assign to it ancient or otherwise, the animals deserve to be themselves and respected. You accomplish this wonderfully in your life and lead others to do so. Thank you!

Snakes in Tucson too, just yesterday on my front porch a four foot black racer tried to strike my friend while she was putting the key in the door. Yes, black racers are non-venomous, but they are very vicious if cornered and will bite and strike repeatedly if threatened. The wonderful guys from NW fire dept. came out and ran it off my doorstep. Yes, they were laughing at us, but they said we did the right thing. Whew!!

If you haven’t already done so, you might consider stuffing steal wool around all the opening in the trailer floors or cupboard, if there are any. Trailers are great “hiding” places for critters, such as mice and of course, mice make great snacks for snakes! Sure wouldn’t want you to find one inside the lollipop with you and other members of the farmily!!

A vaccine is available for rattlesnake bites for your animals. One shot, then a boosted, then annually after that. I’ve also heard that having a pig keeps snakes away. My dogs all have gotten the shots and haven’t seen a rattler since I got my pig.

Rattles are good. I’ve stepped on many silent snakes, but never a rattler.
In the Santa Monica Mountains, a heavily-used hiking area, noisy rattlers are quickly killed. Those rattlers that may be genetically inclined to be less noisy tend to escape.

I learned a technique for snake proofing your farmily, this worked on all of my dogs. I am always picking up and examining things, I have no snake phobia and know to give rattlers a wide birth. I had a dog who loved to play with sticks, one day I found a 1 1/2′ garden snake and picked it up, it promptly pooped on me (If I was grabbed by the equivalent of a 30 story monster that would be MY first reaction) anyway I showed the snake to the dog and it promptly bit her on the nose, not enough to hurt just startle. She avoided snakes there after! Same story with my next dog.

Asclepius was he son of Apollo and is associated with medicine. The snake and rod used to be separate symbols but were combined as some point. Perhaps because of the similarity to the Caduceus, which is sometimes used erroneously in the U.S. as a medical symbol.
The snake may have something to do with the duel outcome in medicine that you can heal or kill, or because snakes shed their skin it is a symbol of healing or rejuvenation. The staff may represent the walking stick of itinerant physicians. Pharmakon can mean drug, medicine and poison.
There is also a biblical reference. (Numbers 21:6-9).
Then the LORD sent fiery serpents among the people, and they bit the people, so that many people of Israel died. And the people came to Moses and said, “We have sinned, for we have spoken against the LORD and against you. Pray to the LORD, that he take away the serpents from us.” So Moses prayed for the people. And the LORD said to Moses, “Make a fiery serpent and set it on a pole, and everyone who is bitten, when he sees it, shall live.” Moses made a bronze serpent and set it on a pole. And if a serpent bit anyone, he would look at the bronze serpent and live.
It isn’t that unusual for biblical and mythological origins to be combined. Just look at some of our holidays.
A direct representation is of ancient traditional treatment of Guinea Worm (Dracunculus medinensis), one of the longest nematodes infecting humans. The females can be up to 30 inches long. The worm peeks out of ulcerous blisters to lay eggs, when the wound is placed in water to cool and soothe it. The practitioner would pull the worm out slowly by winding it around a stick. It’s mostly found in Africa and India. You get it from drinking stagnant water. Eradication is progressing well. In 1985 3.5 million cases were reported annually, by 2008 that number had dropped to 5,000. It can be prevented by filtering and boiling water.
The confusion of the Rod of Asclepius with the caduceus is because the U.S. Army Medical Corps uses the caduceus as it’s symbol. Ironic that the caduceus has historical associations with commerce, theft, deception, and death.

Oh, Crotalus! Rattlesnakes are such beautiful creatures, and it’s sad that this one had to meet the end of it’s life at the hands of a human. I can totally understand that you wanted to protect the farmily, though, but I always hate to see any snake killed.
I’ve always been bitter about my father killing Rattlers, seeing as the Eastern Diamondback populations in my area are starting to dwindle. Remember that their skins can serve a multitude of purposes and that their flesh is very much edible! If you go to prepare one to eat, I would remove the head with a hoe or a machete to avoid being bitten. The brain, unless completely destroyed, will continue to send out signals for hours so that the creature could still open it’s mouth and nip you- no fault of the individual animal, but of her still-firing nerves.
On another note, I love the hand-written approach to blogging. Nothing feels better than writing down your thoughts. And you’ve inspired me to look into living out of a trailer instead of a dorm or apartment when I go off to university!

If it’s any consolation, rattlesnakes (at least here in Arizona) are fairly shy–generally they’ll hear you coming and leave before you get there. And (as I’m sure you know) they’re good critters; they eat vermin. I’ve been hiking and climbing out here for well over a decade and can count on one hand the “snake encounters” I’ve had. That said… anything might bite when startled or cornered, so do be careful. : ) And yes, the sound of rattlesnake rattles will turn one’s blood immediately to ICE WATER, no matter how benign they seem. : D

I first have to say that I agree with Amber. Since we are the same age, I’m also a snake, so I thought this post was very interesting. I really like that you now take pictures of your written word, it seems apt to the site, and makes it much more interactive for some reason. Thank you for asking about the medical snake wrapped around the staff. I learned today(since I looked it up) that the rod of Asclepius is the correct symbol to use, and the Cadueus (the symbol with two snakes and wings)is not used correctly in a medical setting. I always thought it was the other way around. Though when I was studying to be a vet tech, I learned the veterinarian symbol was rod of Asclepius with a V in front of it. I love your blog and was so glad to hear that the farmily keeps growing. =)

I always thought snakes were associtated with medicine because they taught us the “injection”
factor. Also last year I killed the 10th rattlesnake at my home. I have too many animals to allow them to stay and it’s too dangerous to relocate them as some people like to do. I caught a hummer several days ago in my greenhouse. I took all the cob webs off of his feet and wings and set him free.

Wow. We have those too. So far I haven’t screamed- we’ve chatted. Another aspect of snake as medicine is: there’s cure in what can seem to be poison/too frightening/etc. Homeopathy uses many remedies to cure that are actually composed of the thing itself- arsenic, for example. Bee stingers. GREATLY diluted of course. Nietszche said, what doesn’t kill us makes us stronger. Since snake represents wisdom? We’re often afraid of our own knowledge/radiance/whatever, and that keeps us out of balance.

@Roger…I am not sure where you have done your research, but by stating that “Spiritually speaking the Serpent always represents evil……………………. always” you are mistaken. In some spiritual belief systems, the snake represents sexuality, potency, and psychic energies. In others, the snake is a guard, such as the depictions of the Buddha supported and shielded by Nāga (deities in the form of snakes. There are in fact many different ideas as to what the snake represents. The snake as a representation of evil is a much more recent belief than many others around the world that see the snake as a beneficent being. Please don’t make the mistake of thinking that because in your beliefs the snake is seen as evil that this is always the case.

Oh Shreve, I have to share this story with you!!! When I was a kid we moved from Miami to Ft. Lauderdale in 1969, that Summer I was 9 & 1/2. Until that time I’d grown up in the city mostly but one of my uncles had a horse ranch where I spent alot of time and I’d also taken many trips with my dad and uncles into the Everglades….sooo I’d learned alot about snakes including how to tell the poisonous ones from the nonpoisonous ones! My family bought 10 acres out in the middle of nowhere back then and during that Summer we cleared alot of the land to make pasture and we put up fencing for our horses and calves. One day as I rode on the front of a huge mower that my stepdad had borrowed, rake in hand to help keep the debree off the deck as he mowed a huge rattlesnake landed right at my feet!!!! I let out a scream and my stepdad quickly yanked me up from the deck by my t-shirt and pulled me onto his lap! He then grabbed the rake that I’d dropped and pulverized the rattlers head to kill it…so we thought!!! We quit for the day drove the mower with the snake on the deck back up to the house. Excitedly we told our story to the rest of the family and then my stepdad told us about how the snake was still dangerous and not to touch it because of the fangs and venom and the rattle too, then he hung the snake over a sawhorse in our yard. He planned to have it skinned and mounted as it was so huge and was a beautiful Eastern Diamond back!!! Well the next morning he looked outside our glass sliding doors very early before any of the rest of us were up and the snake was gone!!! He slid the door open and just as he went to step outside, he heard a faint rattle, looked down and the snake was laying on the patio just below the door track!!! Of course the rest of us woke up to him shooting the snake until it’s head came completely off it’s body!!! He truly believed that snake was coming to get him and I truly don’t know how it had survived the beating he’d given it with the rake the day before and was still able to slither about 20 feet up to our door!!! He did have the skin mounted afterall and oh how he loved to tell that story over and over to anyone that would listen….for many years to come! ;) have a wonderful day!, jo

Hey, I’m with Indie (Indiana Jones): “Snakes! Why did it have to be snakes?” I can handle spiders and all sorts of other dangers, but I’m positively phobic about snakes. Sorry, snake lovers, but I’m going to repeat what I posted earlier: “…and bring bullets.”
I’ve heard of various snake repellents, some of which are non-toxic and environmentally friendly, but alas and alack, no one has proven that they work, and for me anyway, I’d have a heck of a time getting all those vats and vats of it rolled up the mountain. I’m sure I’d get a bulk discount, though. Ha.

Two months ago at Geology Field Camp, while we were in Elk Basin (on the border of Wyoming and Montana, about 20 miles north of Powell, WY) the boys KILLED AND ATE a rattlesnake! It struck at the wrong guy (a hunter from Minnesota). He got it down, passed it to two other guys, and then cut its head off. They cooked it up at the dorm with onions that stunk the place up. It’s still a bit shocking to me. I saw its skin in the common room back at the dorms, so I know this is true. Just about scared the crap out of me when I went in to clean my water bottle that night.
I figured out rattlers strike at the second person to walk by — so never follow directly in someone’s footsteps, but over by a at least a few feet. I think that’s why I never saw one, even running in knee-high vegetation. Instead, I had the My Little Pony version of Elk basin, complete with antelope, butterflies, frolicking birds, a wall of bird nests, and a bunny or two. <3
