Hunks Of Love

☆ January 20, 2012

Hunks of love.
That’s what bulls are, to me, at least.

I was cleaning out my hard drive and found this picture from a year ago.
This is Rocky, one of the older bulls on the place. He loves a good scratch and some attention. I lie on him, too, but Baby is the only one I ride.

A calendar of your “gentlemen” would be nice, or perhaps a combined photo.

this is lovely! he’s so huge next to you…
when i was growing up, my brother and i were always scared of the bulls on our farm but this image is a strong reminder that we needn’t have been.

    Hunky inDEED :)

I noticed that some of your herd are horned while most(?) of them aren’t. Is that indicative of different breeds, and if so, do you have any thoughts on raising horned vs. un-horned (or even de-horned) cattle?

When i was a kid we had pet pygmy goats that we had disbudded for health and safety reasons. I saw this photo and started wondering about horns on larger livestock and figured you’d have some good insight :)

L ~ Frisco is actually the only one with horns (it’s a breed thing). I wrote a post about his baby horns and the “keep ’em or not” issue here:

Great shot. Gotta love cattle – I have a soft spot in my heart for both cows and bulls – who like stallions, are made to be the villain.

What an awesome photo. For your self-portraits, do you set up your camera on a tripod, set the focus, hit the shutter (on a timer) and then run over and get in the shot before the shutter goes?

Maggie ~ for digi, that’s what I used to do (I have 30′ cable releases for my film cameras) but now I use a uber nifty thing like this (I can’t find the exact one I have):

It’s designed for time lapse photography but I think it’s great for digital self portraits. This way there’s no running! Which makes the photos so much more authentic, because they’re not “posed” ~ you can have the camera firing over a course of five minutes, ten minutes, whatever you want. It’s awesome.

What a majestic creature. Just soaking up the sun, enjoying a well-earned scritch-and-snack.

Lovely composition, the contrast between you and his shaggy massiveness.

Beautiful, beautiful behemoth. Your own personal furnace for those chilly Wyo days. Look what you’ve done: you’ve made all of us fall in love with a giant black bull. …And we thank you for that. Hehe.
