oreo 'n' mama

I told Mike the name suggestions left in the last post
and he loved the name Oreo.
So that is her name.

Most of Mike’s cows are solid black but he had one white-faced cow ~
sometimes this cow would have an all black calf and sometimes she would have
a white-faced calf.  Sometimes the calf was male and sometimes it was female.

One year, she had a white-faced female calf who is now a mama cow, and her calves follow the same pattern of probability.

Oreo’s mama was born to this cow in 2009, and last year she had her first calf,
a female calf with nearly identical markings. You can see a picture of the two of them HERE. This calf was born a few months before Fiona and is now Fiona’s BFF.
{Seriously, they are inseparable.}

Confused yet?
Original White-Faced Cow –> Second White-Faced Cow –> Oreo’s Mother –>
Oreo’s Mother’s First Calf (aka Fiona’s BFF)

Like her sister, mother, and grandmothers, Oreo will stay part of the herd.
She’s doing so well!  Hopping around with a hearty appetite and no lingering ill effects from her rough start in this world.

Very nice baby! I worry about calves every year because I worry about the weather. This year: not much worrying. It was in the mid 60s here this past weekend! I’m guessing that it’s a little cooler over there but still, little Oreo should be enjoying a lovely spring this year. I know that you will be keeping a close eye on that baby. It’s another happy year of calves up there on the range…

Seeing Oreo doing so well has cheered up my morning.
Does her sister, Mom and Gramma have names or do they go by numbers?
Not naming the ones you can’t keep I understand.
I presume you would need some sort of numbering system for the official records, but I would find it difficult not to give the ones that are staying some sort of cute nickname especially if I was around them every day.
I can just see me in the fields with my not very strong, high pitched voice trying to call them. Every one within range of my voice, both two legged and four, would either be rolling in the fields in hysterical laughter, or totally ignoring me.

I’m so glad to see Oreo doing so well! She is certainly a beauty and looks just like her Mom (cow Mom, not Shreve Mom). I’m even more glad to know that Oreo and her kin will remain part of the home herd, thus part of the Farmily!

Oreo was born on Tuesday, March 6, wasn’t she? That day was the 100th anniversary of the Oreo cookie.

My comment on the last post disappeared so will try again on this one. Glad to see Oreo doing so well after all your efforts, we all need a helping hand at some point in our lives and you gave her a good one.

I’m so glad Oreo is thriving!

I know from my herd of (rescued) cats how that BFF thing works.

Mike’s herd is expanding. How many are in it now? Will it eventually take over Wyoming?

Glad Oreo is doing well but now we need a name for her sister other than just “Fiona’s BFF” Taking from the current theme, why not Cookie?

It’s so funny how the markings are passed down. Oreo is a perfect name.

How appropriate that milk and Oreos go so well together. Grow big and strong, sweet little cow.

I just love the side-stories to the main stories on your websites. Thanks so much for adding them – thanks too for the updates when we (your readers)are left worrying about something or someone. Your posts do linger in the mind you know! (As every good story should.)

Perfect! My uncle had a black and white cat named Oreo. Boy cat.

    Isn’t genetics fascinating?

The black cows with the white faces have sorta panda markings because the black is around their eyes.

So glad Oreo can stay with the herd.

I wonder if all of the cows know which are their daughters, mothers, grandmothers, aunts and cousins?

She is so cute, I can’t even stand it! Loved the NICU story…your life and writing inspire me so much. Thanks for sharing it with us!

I also doubt I’m alone here when I ask: when are we going to see the pixie cut?! ; )

Rejoiceful, happy hugs to Oreo and her whole herd!

Cool shot – both mom and baby in profile. Is that Fiona behind them?

CeeBee: Ha! Funny question about Mike’s herd taking over big ol’ Wyoming. Warms the heart to think of an entire state filled with happy, pampered cows… with names.
