Is there anything you still wish to have/accomplish in your life or are you content now as is?

This is really personal, but it’s a question I grapple with: How did you make the decision not to have children?

Are you looking forward to the colder months ahead? What do your winter days look like vs. your summer days?

If you could anywhere in the world to visit where would that be and why? And who would you take with you?

Is there another book (or two) in the wings? — at least a coffee-table book full of luscious photos of Wyoming landscape, the Farmily, and of course Handsome and Adorable Charlie. (I’m clutching a wad of money in hopes…)

What aspects, if any, of living in a more urban setting do you miss?

If you could have someone take care of the farmily for you for 3 weeks, where in the world would you like to visit?

This has been my first real summer out west (Idaho), and the wildfires have been horrible. What kinds of plans do ranchers make for times such as this? Packing up our photos and cats seems bad enough, but being responsible for a farmily such as yours would fill me with worry.

I love your photos of Charlie around the house… seeing how you live and your yard, etc. I also really miss the handwritten posts from last summer. Just reading about your daily life (which may seem mundane to you) is so exciting for the rest of us!

Are yeh freezen yer arse off up there yet?
How much wood do you lay by for winter – two cords or more?
Catch me up on your total critter count.
How many E.B. White-type story ideas have you tucked away to write later?
You’ve marketed your beef directly, you’re on your way to forming a cooperative — where, in general, do you go from here? What’s next?
Have you built your own place, yet, or are you contemplating it?
You’ve recently commented that you and Mike liked sharing a place…foreshadowing?
Did you ever imagine this life in your younger years?
Has the community decided that you’re okay, after all? I’m recalling but not really remembering your stint as a teacher of “evil influence.” You said that folks protect your privacy, but I wonder if they’ve cottoned to you little more than that.
You’re now seen as more than just a crazy coyote lady, I would suppose…?
Do you have a huge vet bill in general?
You might have said, but I don’t remember, how the vet takes to Charlie, or whether that’s evolved over time.
Do you handle your own dog-cat-coyote vaccinations?
What, if anything, do you miss about living in a metropolitan area?
Are you into alternative energy? It seems that up there you could do well with a wind turbine or three for domestic electricity needs.
I believe that solar water heating using an evacuated tube system is viable in your latitudes – 110F even on an overcast winter day if you build it right. Thinking in that direction?
Do you like cast iron cookware? (My newest obsession.)
Have you thought of making a greenhouse for a year-round herb garden? (Hey, I know you’re crazy busy already but you always manage to do what you want.)

I could go on all day…

As one of the most successful bloggers on the internet, why is it that you prefer to stay behind the scenes and not post pictures of yourself, Mike, etc. Obviously you prefer it’s not about you, it’s about the lifestyle, the animals etc. yet it is quite obvious that you are a very attractive young woman and with the type of reality media going on today you would probably be very successful with that. Have you had those offers and do you fear becoming too successful?

Would you like to quit the blog since you have so many other things going on and I know as an occasional blogger how time consuming it can be.

For some reason this idea came to my mind today so thought I would share it with you although your experience was one of the funniest posts ever. Of course it is about the charcoal poultice and the problem (ha ha) of keeping an animal still while it hardens. Couldn’t you just load some cheese cloth with the charcoal and tie it on? Not so much fun for us or said male animal, but easier for you. Sorry Mike, can’t use that lead in anymore.

What would you be doing or would you like to be doing with your life if you weren’t doing this?

I found your post about your stalker so moving, and I am so thankful that you posted that. I respect you so much for being open about what happened so that others might learn from it. Now that it’s behind you, how have you moved on from it? Does any part of it still affect you?

Your lifestyle pretty well ties you to home, but you seem like someone who has or would like to travel. Does that ever present a problem for you?

Your life seems so ideal and wholesome, do you have any “guilty pleasures”?

Thank you for your blog, it’s such a wonderful corner of the Internet and I love every post I read.

When you left the “City life” and moved to quieter settings what were the five biggest happy consequences/surprises and five biggest “hardships” about the move? 5 years later, are they the same?

  33. TB
    September 23rd, 2012 @ 11:48 pm

Where did you find the courage to up and move to Wyoming after being a city-girl for so long? Were you afraid of how you’d put food on the table or did you just believe that things would work out?

Will you ever have another temporary assistant?

How do you manage caring for the animals outdoors during the cold, cold winters?

You seem a concientious steward of the ennvironment and animal rights, yet you are consuming/selling livestock. How do you justify this? as you must be aware of the disastrous effects of this practice to your health, to the animal’s welfare, and to our environment.

I’ve taught elementary school for 38 years, and I’ve stopped saying, “Does anyone have questions?”. Reason being, the questions (and the non-questions)the kiddos ask. I’ve got ‘work-arounds’ to make sure I can help someone who’s having difficulty with academics. That said, I do enjoy hearing their stories about their siblings, doggies, baseball victories, etc.

Wishing you the best in going through all these questions, and I look forward to reading your answers.

    September 24th, 2012 @ 7:02 am

In the wild coyotes have a decreased lifespan due to human encroachment….How long of a lifespan would Charlie have?

If something ever (God forbid!) happened to Charlie, would you seek out raising another coyote pup?

Have you seen Charlie exhibit behaviors that wild coyotes do not exhibit?

Since there seems to be a crackdown in many states about owning exotic/wild animals, are you required to have a state license to keep Charlie?

These are just questions I have always been curious about :)

could you and Mike ever leave the ranch together for vacation? Do you have helpers who could handle tasks for you for a 2-3 week period of time?

(*) How do you plan to adapt to “Climate Change” as your region becomes hotter, drier, etc. (Assuming the current projections are accurate.)
(*) How do you protect your complexion and skin from the ravages of the Wyoming sun and wind?
(*) Do you have a vegetable garden? Do you have an orchard? Do you grow food, fiber and/or flowers? Pleae post photos and stories.
(*) What became of the artist who worked with you and lived in the Jelly Bean. (Was that the name of the trailer?)
(*) Please post your videos at your site. The “Beasty Boys” video has been pulled from YouTube.

Forgot one – is Chloe spayed? I am NOT asking this to start a debate regarding the merits and demerits of spaying/neutering. I am curious simply because I have heard there are new options such as tubal ligations available. Thinking in the future I may go the tubal ligation route vs a full hysterectomy (spay) for my female pup. Thank you again.

I’ve surmised you don’t live in the rental house anymore, what became of the fence you made for Charlie and does he have one now? Is he a big name in Ten Sleep now?

I have an extension of Ailsa’s (#40) question about your gardening. I too would like to know how involved your gardening is (if at all), you’ve spoken about great tomato crops. Are the seeds/plants you use heirloom varieties or do you pick them up at the local feed store? Have you dabbled in canning your produce?

Have you ever read any of Dayton O. Hyde’s books? Or visited his Sanctuary up in South Dakota? Do many people know of him around your area? I am curious as his philosophy of taking care of the land and animals is so close to heart as your’s and Mike’s. He has been writing about it since the 70’s, I only wish I had found his books years ago. (of course, I thought of Charlie often when reading Don Coyote, and continually wish those that believe Coyote’s [or any other predator/animal for that matter] are the problem would read his books as well).

Being a blogger, writer, photographer, how do you manager to maintain privacy or boundaries, or do you not need them?

What are you thoughts on reincarnation? How would you explain meeting someone for the very first time, without exchanging a word – yet feeling like you know them, they’re familiar?

I have a coyote howl question. You are the only one who could possibly understand this howl! I’ve lived in coyote areas all my life, heard and seen them passing through, taking up residence, pups and all, I have heard them howl and yowl and yap and scream, but one night i heard one say the weirdest thing and i have always wondered what that was about! It was one of those silent dark nights, there wasn’t any noise from wind or barn animals or dogs, cars or people. i stopped just to soak in the stillness. Suddenly from nearby there was a monotoned note, a long low coyote howl. It was just one note and it sounded very forced, not frolicky or excited like they usual sound. No other coyotes answered or joined in. i knew it was not a dog because it started with a tiny bit of the coyote high squeal they usually do. It sure puzzled me as to what was going on. It sounded a bit menacing but also a bit sad. After it stopped there was a long silence….and then all at once all the dogs in the area began to bark!! So often they never bark at coyote howlings, so they too recognized it as something different. My husband gave me your book when it first came out, it was so wonderful to read about your dear sweet Charlie!!! I thought, you of all people might know what emotion, activity or event might have been marked by that expression! (So sorry if i am not describing it well enough though. and too looong of a question!! eeks!)

All the questions are great and all things that would be interesting to know. The chain of events that have brought you to where you are today is amazing. What do you think you would be doing if you hadn’t met Mike and accepted the coyote pup Charlie? Do you think you could do what you are doing without Mike in the picture? Or do you think it’s because of his support in so many ways that you are able to do all that you do? And one last question…does Charlie and/or Chloe ever sleep in the bed with you?<3

I love it when people ask for open-ended no holds barred questions so here goes:

Describe your favorite sunset or sunrise you recently witnessed.

What is your favorite type of digital camera? And if you could only have 1 lens what would it be?

If you had to get a job, what would you want to do?

    What is your favorite color?

Where do you get Charlie and Chloe’s dog toys? They seem to go through toys like my kooky critters.

If you had to live off the grid, what type of energy source do you prefer – solar or wind?

How many cords of wood do you go through in a winter?

    Do you have central heating?

If you could have only 1 pot or pan in your kitchen, what would it be?

    What is your favorite spice?

    What is your favorite soup?

Is there anything about big city life that you miss?

Do you still have your little Vespa?

he was young- how cute, and I wish people would
    stop killing coyotes….

Will you be keeping Maia? Will Fiona be bred to become a dairy cow? What will happen to all of their calves, will you eventually use them for star brand beef?

    Hey Shreve,
I want to share a story with you that involves a coyote. In 2010, my pugeranian (pug/Pomeranian) was attacked by a coyote. The coyote was unsuccessful on taking off with her for two reasons. 1. My pup is very chubby, according to the Vet (i say she’s big boned, but whatever.) 2.the coyote was on top of a snow bank and was trying to lift her up off a shoveled path below. Of course I screamed some unappealing words at the coyote and raised a ruckus that even I am a bit ashamed when I recall this incident. My pup survived after nearly being torn apart, but I cannot explain the feeling of being torn apart myself as I felt the surge of protecting my girl, but also feeling the angst of seeing a wild animal only trying to survive. I live near a wooded area that up until recently was pretty thick. The town leaders felt that it would be great to add more housing to a town that is having a hard time selling the homes that have been here forever. I will not go all political, but these coyotes have lived here for as long as I can remember and have had no human/domestic pet attacks until the town took over their land. How can I as a home owner/tax payer/law abiding citizen and a animal lover stop the sensless bulding and keep the peace with the coyotes. The town is basically giving home owners the right to protect their homes, children and pets if a coyote wanders the neighborhoods. The coyotes have no place to go!! Sorry for this rant, but I wanted you to know that I truly enjoyed your book, your website and postings and I wish that my life would of turned out similar to yours in the fact that you live untethered. Thank you for letting me live vicariously through you. you

So many questions, Shreve….you give us so much and yet it’s not enough…time to write (maybe done already) another book, and not only about Charlie but all about those fantastic, innovative natural solutions in taking care of your farmily.
You sound so settled and content in your life as a true modern day ‘settler’, but is there any part of you still sometimes yearning to be that ‘vagabond’?

How long do coyotes usually live? I ask because I was out hiking with my five dogs a few weeks ago and we came upon a VERY old Coyote. She was laying in some grass clippings and it was obvious she was very very old. She made no attempt to fight or get up for a few minutes. My dogs were all off leash. My Weimaraners made no attempt to go near her and listened to me when I backed up and started to take off. My little Lhasa didn’t listen to me and got within a foot of her. I was freaking out but she made no attempt to do anything. I could tell she was weak and probably dying.
I was able to get all my dogs and left her alone.

I couldn’t stop thinking about her. I was happy to see that she appeared to be a old girl but I was sad she was by herself and dying. I guess pack members just leave when one of their own is dying?

I, too, would love to see an update on the Farmily. Is Ricardo still doing well? The kitties?

Do you plan to spend another summer in the trailer on the mountain? Those scanned handwritten posts were awesome. What about those? Do you have anymore you cold share?

What about a “farm recipes” section?

I,too, look forward to hearing your comments, answers, whatever you feel comfortable about sharing. But I cannot resist the opportunity to mention to your fans/friends/blog followers, that several of these questions have been beautifully addressed by you earlier. It is all available in your archives and can be searched out by any of us. I have been a faithful follower for several years but I still go back and re-read your earlier comments.

You have a large virtual following, as well as a real-life, active ranching community. Your cyber community probably wants much more than you could ever give and still make time to live, ‘life.’ How have you established and maintained healthy, personal and emotional boundaries? [I, too, am wondering how the assistant worked out.]

Is Charlie neutered? Does he ever respond to the presence of other coyotes? Are you aware of the “wild” in Charlie most times? My experience with 1/2 wolf/Siberian husky is that there is always that element of thinking and reacting going on in their brain that humans must be cognizant, vigilant and very respectful of. No matter what the human perceives as a “relationship”, the animal just does not. No, I DO NOT EVER support having hybrids or wolves for the non-professional. I did not have any, just visited them in Indiana as a young woman. Did have 4 Sibes as show dogs and friends. That’s enough for us!
Thanks so much for sharing your life with us all.

Clearly you work hard to live a life of authenticity and integrity. Has some opportunity come your way that’s really, really tempted you? I can imagine that more than once you’ve been approached by someone/someones hoping you’d sell out (even just a little bit).

    Oh my gosh, Shreve.
You have your work cut out for you.
Just reading up to LeFevre – I think the name is – was great fun. Super questions that I’ve managed to read so far. LeFevre wins my vote, so far for both most interesting post, and posting handle.
I am so looking forward to having time to read more of these questions. They’re amazing!

While living your city life, did you just…know deep down inside that you were meant for a life much simpler, real, and natural like you live today? It’s like my heart longs for so much more living in the midst of a busier town down in the Houston area of Texas. I know I’m meant to be in the mountains and valleys…the open spaces…raising animals like you and many other women I follow via the Internet. I know that’s only one question, but I also just wanted to say thank you. Your story is inspiring me to pursue the dreams I have to work cattle, raise horses, and live the ranch life I always knew I was made for. Hopefully within the next year I will be moving to make that dream a reality. You’re awesome – much love.

You have accomplished a lot since moving to Wyoming and building your house and in the process you have picked up quite a few skills you didn’t possess before.

Looking back, which skill are you the most proud of learning and what skill do you look forward to learning in the future?

If there was one other animal you could add to the farmily with no restrictions on laws, society views etc. (be it domesticated or not). What would you choose and why?

(That sounds a lot like an essay question, sorry! ;))

When are you going to come out with another Cowboy calendar? What is your favorite time of day? If you had to pick one book to be marooned with on a desert island, what would it be? Have you ever had a bad experience with the color purple? How many times in your life have you put on your shoes? If you had to get a short haircut, what style would it be? Do you have a recently realized irrational fear of spiders crawling in your ears? If you could have a one night stand with anybody who would it be (can’t be your signficant other)? What is your favorite celebration each year or not. There, that is enough fodder for several blogs:)
