Maia!
☆ September 18, 2012
It hasn’t taken me this long to name her, I promise,
it’s just taken me this long to write about it.
Way back when I first posted about this calf, a brilliant commenter left the suggestion to name her after a star, apropos of Star Brand.
I loved this idea and looked up a bunch of star names, and wrote them down along with some other suggested names. I went out and sat about fifteen feet from where this little calf was lying and started reading the names out loud.
When I said “Maia,” she raised her head and looked at me. I kept reading through the names and she went back to ignoring me, but when I said “Maia” again, she got up and trotted over to me. So Maia is quite certainly her name! It’s a star in the constellation Taurus (the bull), which is also rather fitting.
She’s feisty and sweet and has seamlessly integrated into the Farmily.

I love it!!! Is she a dairy cow like Daisy? How does Fiona like her “adopted sister”?

Lovely name! Maia, the mother of Hermes in Greek mythology, and also the source of the name of a lovely month.

Oooo, that was a very thoughtful naming strategy. I like the idea of the calves being named after stars. She’s very, very pretty.

Squee! She’s so lovely! And such a pretty name, too. :o)

Wonderful name for a beautiful calf. Indeed if she responds to her name, it has to be hers:) You have such a gift with all the animals in your Farmily.

I can tell this girl has some personality! What a wonderful addition she has made to the Farmily!

As usual Shreve, another great story about the Farmily. And how adorable is she? I wonder if my apartment allows cows for pets?

What a beauty! A star indeed. ;)

She should fit right in, she looks so much like Sir Baby when he was that age! And alas, Fiona is no longer the baby, but maybe she’s ready to be a big girl now anyway.

she’s such a beautiful colour! a perfect addition to your bovine collection.

Maia is absolutely gorgeous, though somehow I sense a pinch of “mischievous minx” beneath the beauty .

she’s lovely!!! her name is befitting and her color is devine….just like semi-sweet cocoa :)

Is that Daisy’s scrumptious milk she’s licking off her nose? It certainly is agreeing with her as she looks absolutely divine! Love the name and method of selection, not to mention that it contains the first three letters of my choice, MAIsy, I’m content with that lol.

The way you discovered her name is just perfect! And it seems to fit her so well for all the reasons previously stated. She is absolutely beautiful! Although you didn’t choose my name ‘Lucky’ for her, she is still so very lucky to be in your farmily!<3

What a lovely name! :o)

Sorta less naming her and more discovering what her name already is.
What a darling she is. She is just beautiful.
Daisy, Fiona and Maia.
What are you going to do with all that milk? You can only take so many baths.
September 18th, 2012 @ 6:33 pm
Beautiful! Looks like she’s doing beautifully. It will be interesting to see if this non-dairy breed turns into a total chunk on Daisy’s milk :)

She is -stunning-! Such sweet, kind eyes. <3

That’s how I used to name my foster dogs if they were strays. See what they responded to, and that was it!

I’m glad you discovered her name!
Nice connection to Star.
I don’t remember there being a Maia as a suggestion, but maybe I didn’t get through all the comments.
Interested to hear more about her personality when you have a chance.

Had a friend, ya hard to imagine, who let me name 2 of her doggie companions. The first was Iris, the goddess of love and pain, we were best buds, follow lead, lead follow. Names her for her owners favorite color..Purple. When Iris died (In our Arms) My friend acquired a new dog (a Katrina dog from NO) and it was a Carolina dog. If you don’t know the breed, it is the oldest breed in North America. The Indian tribes in the Carolina’s have had and raised them way before Christo Columbo hit these shores. I got to name her also, after 2 hrs on the phone and many look-ups in my North American Guide to Plants, I got it! Nyssa! Named for a Gum Tree in Carolina (My friends name is Caroline) it fit. and when my friend said the name to the dog she got up and laid across her stomach. You know, The we are ours look. Shreve has the talent, it is a soul look, a fact finding mission for all parties involved. Oh Carolina dogs have a rather disparaging name “American Dingoes” actually they love kids and adopt them as there own..No Meryl Streep “The Dingo ate my DAUGHTER”!

Almost forgot, Scottie you have to pull really hard on your tongue and then try it again. Go Scottie Go.

I wonder if she thought you were “moo-ing” at her when you said “Maia”. Anyway, great name. Many blessings to the little girl.

To I Hermit: Ditto here about being a “Dr. Who” fan. I once had a cat named “Nyssa” because she was a stray, and presumably an orphan, when we took her in.

She is a beauty!

OMG – she is so cute. She will be another milk cow? So then does that mean she is one of the lucky ones and won’t become hamburger?

I happened to peek at your twitter today and saw the question about the video you linked a long while back. Though I don’t have a twitter account, I did have the video bookmarked. So, if you want to share it with the one asking, here it is!

She’s so pretty! I have a shallow bias for Jerseys, but Maia’s as pretty (in a different way) as any Jersey I’ve seen…
