Thanks, you.
☆ November 19, 2012
This month has kicked my ass and before I transfer the violence,
I’m taking the week to recoup and will be offline. But! It ain’t all bad!
There’s also a lot to be grateful for, like youuuu…….
I’m putting together a “thanks for existing” care package
which will include a calendar, postcards, a 5×7 print of this image, an antler necklace, my favorite bath salts, a gorgeous giant turkey feather,
and probably some other stuff ~
which I will be mailing to one of you next week.
Just leave a comment to enter this drawing ~
I’ll pick the lucky number based on the following equation:
how many icicles I find on my house multiplied by
how many pieces they shatter into when I bang them off the gutters
divided by the number of goose-honks I hear as the flocks fly by.
AND, for anyone and everyone, ALL items in the Shop are on sale this week.
~ EVERYTHING will be 10% off for the next SIX DAYS ~
Just enter the code THANKS during checkout
now through Sunday!

A coyote care package would be a great pick-me-up right about now… My grandmother passed away last night, which was really the cherry on top of an already awful month. I’m determined that my family still have a good holiday season, though, and I’m trying to stay focused on all the good things in my life that I am so thankful for.
Happy holidays and best wishes to you and the farmily. Keep being awesome and inspiring!

Been reading a lot about wolves after a visit to Yellowstone. They are huge compared to our local coyotes but some of the predator behavior is similar.

Ha! You are too funny! I’ll be in Cheyenne for Christmas and will be thinking of you and the farmily. I’ve actually been through Ten Sleep when my sister lived in Gillette, and we drove through the Big Horns and then up to Cody. So beautiful!
November 19th, 2012 @ 9:56 am
A long soak in your tub while sipping wine and looking at the stars might help a bit. That is if it is not too cold to do so.
Have a relaxing week with your farmily.

Goosehonks.
I miss Ricardo.
Violence? That you want to do in frustration rather than done to you I hope.
I’m thankful for this blog I can visit to share in your life.
I am grateful for a freezer full of meat. Well, not as full as it was as I’ve been enjoying it.
I’m honored you have let us share Charlie’s life through your eyes. And the rest of the farmily too.

Awesome! Thank you for existing. This blog is a wonderful gateway and escape. Also…my dog (and now my girlfriend’s dog) still love the elk antler I bought a year ago and it barely looks like it’s been gnawed on.
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:10 pm
Taking care of yourself is so important. Recoup, relax, recharge. See you soon. :)
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:10 pm
Thanks for the opportunity for the goodies – I love the Grab & Stab I bought a few months ago!
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:11 pm
Love the equation! But as a scientist, I notice a very big variable regarding the picking process that you didn’t address – the time of you will be doing your calculation. Time of day is related to temperature (but the time is the variable that you can control) and this could significantly affect not only the number of icicles, but the breaking properties of the ice and the activity levels of the geese. I guess I’ll just post a comment now, since I can’t calculate a good comment number given the existing information. :)
Thanks for all your photos and posts! It makes for a good break during the day.
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:12 pm
thank you for providing such a wonderful place to turn to in good times and bad. love to you and all of yours.

Yay for you! and Yay for Charlie! Thanks for all the great photos and thoughts :)
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:24 pm
Thanks right back atcha, Shreve. Enjoy your hiatus!
(May I say your equation made my brain cramp? You just invented nature geekery.)
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:25 pm
Not my best month either. Reading your website cheers me up!
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:28 pm
I can’t wait to read what you were writing on this month! Totally understand your needing some time off – working over 40 hours a week and living alone while the hubs is on a *ahem* business trip several time zones away until March and a computer that decided to die the day before NaNoWriMo meant that I’m still only in the outlining/brainstorming of mine. Here’s to next year!
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:30 pm

I love your formula for selecting the winner! My thanks go to you for enriching my life with your blogs.
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:56 pm
What a fun way to pick a winner! I’m sending my love to all the farmily. Happy Thanksgiving!! (P.S. I volunteer at a therapeutic horse riding center, and Fred, our barn cat, looks like Eli’s brother! I bet they’d be thick as thieves if they lived in the same state.)
November 19th, 2012 @ 1:59 pm
I love your way of choosing the winner. :)
November 19th, 2012 @ 2:06 pm

Hi, Im not normally one to leave comments on any blogs but I am a fan of yours! Your book keeps coming back to me to read in moments when I need to create space in my mind. I think on myself sitting in the red dirt looking out to nothing but space ~ thank you for that x
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:04 pm

November 19th, 2012 @ 3:08 pm
I say send the care package to Maya #24. She sounds like she could use a little TLC of her own over there.
This reminds me of when I was a kid at the Queen Mary with my mom. I was bored and acting up and she told me if I wanted something to do to go count the bolts on the hull of the ship :-)
Have a great holiday and stay warm. Thanks for posting your great adventures for the rest of us stuck in the city.
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:13 pm
Have a great week off!!!
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:14 pm

November 19th, 2012 @ 3:33 pm
This Thanksgiving I will be giving thanks for you and your life in Wyoming, all the aspects of it. …you have been a tremendous positive in my life ever since I found the book and you. You make me smile to know that someone is “out there” living the life that I always dreamed of and hope to still have someday.
You are such a strong remarkable woman and your writings and pictures make me smile every day.
Happy Thanksgiving, Shreve…now get some rest and I can’t wait to get my hands on your new book.
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:34 pm
My husband the engineer says the elements of your equation constitute random inputs. :-) Thank YOU, Shreve, for the joy and delight in life that you express and that you share with all of us. Blessings.
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:38 pm
Happy Thanksgiving to you, and all of your farmily ! Thanks for making my day a little brighter !
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:43 pm
Geese in the air, rain on the roof,
Weather gone freezing, mix me a proof.
Don’t fix on your numbers, jiggle them around
To equate with my story, then cement them by sound,
by sky, by migration, and whatever might lack,
to grant me my wish for that lovely care pack!
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:49 pm
What a sweet post. I can’t tell you how much inspiration your work has brought to my little world!
November 19th, 2012 @ 3:52 pm

And bake something with gingerbread spices. You inspire!

November 19th, 2012 @ 8:53 pm
Shreve you are amazing. When the world is kicking my ass I just want to put on my jammies, eat comfort food, and wish it would all go away. You, on the other hand, send a care package to one of your readers. It’s too bad more people (myself included) aren’t like you. We should all strive to do for others when we’re feeling bad.
November 19th, 2012 @ 8:58 pm
I am amazed at your spirit, Shreve, your kindness and openness to others, and that you might consider me as one of your potentials for receiving such an awesome gift. Thank you – I LOVE the photo of Charlie as a young’un. And in terms of the answer to your question, well, it’s probably in the hundreds. BTW, I love honking geese!

I would welcome a photo of all the journals you filled up this month writing your book by hand.
I really got off track with NaNoWriMo, but found lots of inspiration and am finding myself settling into a nice daily regiment of long writing sessions. It’s a really nice feeling finally making this happen.
I can’t wait to read your new book.

Hi, Shreve,
I’m sorry to hear the month has been ass-kicking. But I am more concerned by your reference to violence. I pray with all my heart that your old stalker has not resurfaced.
When you are ready, please let us know what happened – or at least that you are all right.
In the meantime, I wish you and Mike and all the Farmily a blessed and joyous Thanksgiving.
Sending hugs and love to you all,
Theresa

Ashamed to write you from New Mexico, what with last weekend’s activities.
However, please know there are many working for the protection of all wild predators, including coyotes, wolves, and foxes.
Meantime, please know we appreciate you, Shreve… for sharing your challenges as well as your joys.
Happy Thanksgiving,
Judith

Icicles already! Wow!
Hope you are closing in on your word count :-)
I’m behind, but I think I can do it!
November 21st, 2012 @ 5:03 pm
Shreve,
Well, thanks to you too. For continuing year after year, creating both your great blogs, writing good-good stuff and role modeling a different and great way to live in this world.
And I also am wishing you, that handsome honey of yours and all your 4-legged furry farmily members a wonderful Thanksgiving holiday.
A big fan from friendly MN.
November 21st, 2012 @ 5:17 pm
I think that number will be quite existential and subjective. I hope so anyway because if you actually count the icicles and the number of times they fall I will be very concerned about your sanity. Happy Thanksgiving.
November 21st, 2012 @ 5:25 pm
Many, Many, things to be thankful for!!!
November 21st, 2012 @ 5:46 pm
Happy Thanksgiving Shreve!
November 21st, 2012 @ 6:11 pm

November 21st, 2012 @ 6:53 pm
You give something away and everyone makes a reply! I hope you made lots of excellent progress with NaNo and Happy Thanksgiving!
November 21st, 2012 @ 8:09 pm
Obviously the number would be the same as the number of angels that can fit on the head of a pin. Keep warm toes and nose, and the rest will take care of itself. Happy Thanksgiving!
November 21st, 2012 @ 8:36 pm
Thanks for being you, and for sharing what you do. Happy Thanksgiving, and enjoy smashing those icicles! *HUG*
November 21st, 2012 @ 8:55 pm
Enjoy your posts so much, thanks for sharing. Have a great week off!
November 21st, 2012 @ 9:46 pm
I’ll probably lose, but how much more creative can you be for a formula to pick a winner? Worth posting just for that! Happy Thanksgiving!
November 21st, 2012 @ 9:51 pm
Love the formula for picking a winner! And I’m a little jealous you have icicles.
November 21st, 2012 @ 10:16 pm
Hope I’m not too late, and I am not the slightest jealous of icicles. Had enough as a kid when I was tough and able to take the bitter cold better. lol On my old school in MN, the icicles were so huge and high up that they warned us often about staying out from underneath them, in case one tell and hurt someone.
November 21st, 2012 @ 10:29 pm
I am all about beating the odds, and your great mathematical formula. Thank you for everything you do! Happy Thanksgiving!
November 21st, 2012 @ 11:22 pm
It all started with viewing your blog daily for the gorgeous photos you take. Then, I joined your organic beef venture. And of course, the grab & stabs in your online store. You continue to amaze me in so many ways. So, thank you for existing! Now, enjoy your down time and we’ll be here when you want to rejoin.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 3:57 am
Thank *you*, and have an excellent week off!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 5:27 am
Hoping you, Mike, and the farmily have an excellent Thanksgiving!
Geese have become one of my favorite birds, because everytime we hear them at the barn my horse stops whatever he’s doing and stares wide-eyed, ears-pricked towards the sky. If he was eating hay or grass, it’ll slowly fall from his mouth. I think the geese remind him of his first home in Canada.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 8:35 am
Love your blog! Hope you have a Happy Thanksgiving :)
November 22nd, 2012 @ 10:08 am
Have a good restful break!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 11:32 am

November 22nd, 2012 @ 12:10 pm
ohhh! i NEED a website, just so I can connect to ones like yours- well not quite, but close to yours, there are not many !
I enjoy the virtual connection to your farmily, and the mathematical formula or farmula you are using to pick maybe maybe my name!!!! Haha AND I am making a store order!
So I won’t miss your posts too too too much.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 1:19 pm
Sorry about your week but thanks for turning lemons into lemonade by thinking of us!
Happy off-line and thanks for your writing, however it manifests…
November 22nd, 2012 @ 3:09 pm
Hope you are enjoying your week off and a lovely thanksgiving! And what a neat way to determine the “random” number.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 3:11 pm

November 22nd, 2012 @ 4:14 pm
Enjoy your week off! :)

Adore your first line, since I can so relate. Destressing is not over-rated. May you enjoy the air you breathe, the fur you cuddle, the stars that sparkle just for you, and all else special to you Ms.S.

November 22nd, 2012 @ 6:42 pm
May you all have a wonderful thanksgiving! I just happen to finish reading the copy of your book I was finally able to get my paws on. Sitting down with your book or blogs always manages to leave me feeling so grounded with life, not to mention all the warm and fuzzies. :) Thank you
November 22nd, 2012 @ 8:54 pm
You and Charlie make my every single day brighter! Thank you for being you!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 9:43 pm
Happy thanksgiving! Thanks for the beautiful little window into another world you give us :).
November 22nd, 2012 @ 9:45 pm
Seriously, the number of giveaways that you do on this website is amazing. What a generous person!
As I’m in Australia, I will be nostalgically reminiscing on all of the Thanksgiving festivities that everyone’s partaking in :) Have a wonderful holiday from the internet!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 9:48 pm
Hi Shreve. I hope your week off helps. When I want to escape the stress I go to your blog to read about what your doing, or look at pictures of Charlie. I always feel much better. I’ve been reading it almost everyday for over a year now. If there’s nothing new I look at the archives. I just wanted you to know how much I appreciate you sharing with us. Thank you! I hope you feel better!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 9:57 pm
I don’t know how you do it with the farmily – their needs make it hard to take care of your own needs first. I’d say take some time to be a cold-hearted SOB if necessary, but the fact that you put together a care package for others in a stressful week says you just aren’t wired that way. Hang in there.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 10:05 pm
Have a wonderful week off! You take such wonderful care of your farmily, you need to take care of you too!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 10:19 pm
Oh me, me, pick ME!
thank YOU for all the words of encouragement you give to everyone who follows you!
November 22nd, 2012 @ 10:34 pm
Thank YOU for your wonderful blogs!
I’ve learned so much about Coyote from you, I look forward to the ones that sing to me each night. I’ve also learned to lock the turkeys up, so the two don’t meet again.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 11:14 pm
Happy happy day to you.
November 22nd, 2012 @ 11:22 pm
I hope your time away rejuvenates you. We look forward to your return! Happy Thanksgiving to you, Mike and your farmily!
November 23rd, 2012 @ 7:04 am
I look forward to the photos every day and your
thoughts, so I will miss them for now, take
your time for yourself, Charlie, Mike, etc.,etc.
the cold weather is hard, especially for the ones
that work outside….please, give Charlie a pat
for me, 2 miles from my house is an open range
where a pack has the run and I take my 2 Grey-
hounds walking down there at night, just to hear
them….they sure are a curious bunch….
and I still love the “baby” Charlie photos-
Take Care
November 23rd, 2012 @ 11:17 am

I’m most excited about that turkey feather, I’ve inadvertently started a collection of feathers because I live in L.A and these are the things we find interesting. I have an ostrich feather, some goose feathers, and a handful of swan feathers.
