Shark Whisperer

☆ May 8, 2013

Ocean Ramsey can hold her breath for nearly six minutes –
while swimming with Great White sharks.
Incredible.

From her site: “Many people fear sharks and have unfortunately only seen them portrayed on TV and in films as mindless man-eating machines. In truth, sharks are intelligent, calculated and generally very cautious about approaching humans. More importantly, sharks play a vital role in maintaining a healthy ocean ecosystem. Many people are unaware that sharks are being over-fished to the point of extinction. As the Sengalese environmentalist Baba Dioum said, “In the end people will only protect what they love, and only love what they understand.” I hope that by sharing my experiences with sharks I might inspire others to take action and help protect these amazing creatures before it’s too late.”

Check out Water Inspired for spectacular underwater photos and more about shark conservation.

YES!!!! Fantastic post about sharks!! I love sharks and find them truly fascinating and I try soo hard to teach people around me how important they are! I had the amazing chance to swim with them in March and it was breath taking to see them. Shreve THANK YOU for posting this, made my day to see another person advocating for the protection and understanding of sharks!! :)

    Hi Shreve,
Even though I live in NH now and before that Colorado for many years… I grew up in Miami, Florida and have always had a great love and respect for all ocean life since I was a kid…but Great Whites have always been my favorite!!! I’m glad that advocacy for sharks is on the rise, it’s really sickening just how small the population is…Hunted to the brink of extinction. These creatures are so, SO misunderstood it’s unreal. Beautiful video and pictures.

I hope Shark Lady doesn’t become the ocean equivalent of Grizzly Man.

Amazing. Love what she says about swimming with sharks and feeling the subtle unseen movements in the water.

Thanks so much for posting this, Shreve! So inspiring. In March I went swimming with humpback whales and it was life changing. Hope to make it to South Africa one of these days to visit the breaching great whites.

So where is PATR? Well I am in Biloxi Mississippi this week. I have been watching a shark fish each morning from our balcony. Along with dolphin and birds galore. So many animals are misunderstood thanks to Hollywood.

Part of this is caused by media and our culture of being told what to think and do- hypersensitivity and fear of everything. We need to untrain and learn by our individual experiences with nature with a good expectation. I believe the whole earth is unified, but fear has tainted our experiences and views. We have to chooose. I’ve learned I have to turn off the fear perspective, and also the good and bad option- nature is harmony really if viewed correctly. That’s why I love your site and perspective- I just feel the harmony. :) The cranes, the coyotes, the cows, the cats, the dogs . . . the bulls . . .
