IXCHEL

I’m working on a post that is so clear in my mind, yet so convoluted when I try to write it down…. I hope to have it up later today. In the meantime, Ixchel! Isn’t she a doll?

    Shreve,
I love your star brand beef! I’m vegetarian but i have 3 little beef eaters and am excited to use your products. These questions are just out of curiosity as i’ve just joined your blog: are you vegetarian? (i know that’s personal.) and are the cows you introduce to us, such as ixchel, kept as family? or will they be used as meat? (yikes. remember, i’m the vegetarian in the family…) either way, i’m very happy for what you’re doing. Thanks.

M ~ Thank you so much! I am not vegetarian, though I generally eat as a vegetarian when I dine out unless I know the origin story of the meat that is served (some restaurants in Bozeman and California are great about sharing how and where they source their meat – if it is humanely raised and never enters the feedlot system – and I think this is a growing trend). I’ve written about my eating choices more in depth here: http://starbrandbeef.com/blog-2/

Most of the named cows here on the blog are female, and they do not transition into beef. And Sid, for example, though male, won’t either, as he’s a “Special Project” (as I mention in an earlier post). While I love and respect each steer that does transition into food, I try to force myself not to name them. But… regardless of names, the time of transition is an emotional one. It’s hard, no matter what!

Here, there and ever where – that is my thoughts now with so much going on in my life. Write it out – it’s cathartic and if you post it – we would never criticize.

I want to scratch that swirl on her forehead and rub those big muley ears.

P ~ HAHAHAHAHAHAHAHAAAAA!! I know you (and many) would not, but I get criticized for typos, for imperfectly expressed thoughts, for every single freakin’ aspect of my life….it’s the internet, after all!

Love the fuzz on the bottom of her ears and I want to smell the top of her head. I know, sounds strange – but all of my dogs top of their heads have a distinct smell. One smells like oranges all the time – another somewhat like fog…maybe it’s just me ;-) HA!

I’m so jealous of those eyelashes!! She’s so sweet.

Just curiosity, is her coat really that light reddish/orange color or has she been enjoying a dirt-roll? :)

Did your other calf with the amazing coloration end up staying that way? I’ve never seen such unusual coloring, but I don’t hang around too many cows, either.

Your farmily always look so clean and well tended. You can tell they are hand raised and used to you as they gaze so confidently at you in their pictures. I got the gluten book today, new problems developed with lymph system requiring change in my eating. I’m thankful you did the work and raised awareness, so I knew of a good place to start this new adventure. Thank you.

    K ~ it’s actually reddish :)

A ~ Leila (pics here- http://honeyrockdawn.com/2014/08/wild-thing/) changes with the seasons! Her summer coat is solid black and her winter coat is black and red and blond. It’s not as extreme as her baby coloring, but still distinct.

The forehead swirl sucked me but what looks like her center part is oh-so-stylish. I want to kiss her snotty calf nose…there I said it. :)
