It’s dark at 9pm and it’s dark at 6am – the light changed while I was gone. It’s not summer anymore, equinox schwequinox.

I’ve been home for a week since my final Star Brand Beef deliveries and, as always, it’s a little weird adjusting from my time as a turtle. My little red reefer truck was my home for three weeks, four delivery routes, 8181 miles – and I loved every second of it, despite the truck having issues every. single. day. (the truck kept me safe and all my beef safe, so, hooray for that). I absolutely love getting to spend time with my customers, long-time readers, email pals, and the opportunity to move beyond the veil of the internet into real life.

I think it might be time to hire seasonal help next year, spring and summer. Maybe even sooner. More details on that as soon as I get logistics worked out in my head. I would love to give someone from “the outside world” a chance to come in and work in agriculture and be part of sustainable, ethical food production…… so much to figure out, though!

Last night’s dinner: organic brown rice cooked in homemade bone broth, served with seared elk tenderloin. Does this sound like a special menu item at an elegant restaurant? Did I mention this was Charlie’s and Chloe’s dinner? Mike had a peanut butter sandwich and I had cereal.

I’ve been home for a matter of days and have already dove head first into a giant new project, which will debut next year and which I know you will LOVE. It is a love project. After 2014 and 2015, when I was barely functioning and just trying to keep myself and my businesses alive, it feels SO GOOD to work hard!

Farmily update: everyone is wonderful and happy and peaceful – Mike held down the fort while I was away, and, thanks to having my own truck, I got to spend time at home with the Farmily between each delivery trip. It made a world of difference for me and them!

AND, since I’ve been getting emails about this already: the 2017 CHARLIE CALENDAR is coming! I would never break tradition! It will be ready to share mid-October….

I wish I could have been one of the lucky ones to meet you, but I’m in Canada and I don’t think you come this way. I just have to be satisfied with reading your posts and seeing your wonderful pictures every day.

The canines get a gourmet meal and you have cereal? I would have at least made enough for three and joined them. Maybe lit a few candles.
Now that you’re back, I’ll get that book in the mail to you. I just wanted to be sure you were there when it arrived.
I think I may have to try to paint a picture of Daisy. I haven’t tried to do fur yet.

if we are gonna love it, then my guess is that you are going to expand your critter list. after all, we love critters even w all the heartache that goes with em.
omg 8,000 miles dang girl you are the queen of the open road w that one. who needs a vespa when you got a reefer. hopefully the reefomatic will get the bugs ironed out.

OMG… Sorry to hear about the reefer!! I sure was hoping you had found a reliable one…
I’d be the first in volunteering for your seasonal help, but I’m quite the soft hearted granny when it comes to actually doing animal food production. Charlie and Chloe have the life…if only other companion animals could be treated so well.
Can hardly wait to see what that “new” project will be!! And as always it feels good to be back in your own element ready for the next adventure!
P.S. About that calendar; I agree w/Peggy P, but, have you done a cowboy one lately?

Instead of hiring someone from the outside, have you thought about connecting with one of the many ag departments and bringing in an intern? I work at Oregon State and I know we’ve got some extra amazing students who would love a chance to work with you to learn from you. I did my PhD @ Utah State and I know the same is true there. Then there’s U of Wy, your land grant. I don’t know much about the Ag department but I suspect there are amazing students there too. I know an intern can be extra work, but it’s a thought.

So sorry to hear your little red reefer had problems, hope they can all be fixed. At least the “reefer” part didn’t let you down; that would have been awful – and an awful waste of beef!
Oh, Charlie and Chloe are indeed lucky…they get Michelin-starred din-dins and you and Mike get to scrape by on pb and cereal. Do they know they are living the high life?!
I’m looking forward to the “new project” with baited breath. In the meantime, welcome home!!!

I am so envious of Charlie and Chloe’s supper. A friend gave me a couple of venison tenderloins a while ago and I swear that was the best meat I have ever tasted (even better than your Angus beef). Now whenever I see the deer in my orchard I want to learn how to shoot a compound bow! Ah, well, the beef is wonderful. One of these days I have to share some recipes with you.

These videos hunters post of shooting their bows & the animals suffering painful slow deaths, crying out in agony are very disturbing & haunting.
Linda Hatfield of HOWL compiled & wrote a report on the realities of bow hunting. The statistics and aftermath is horrifying. Wounding & crippling losses are extremely high. People need to eat but doing this way is so callous & cruel.
