Ha! Yes, chopping ice off the stream to take your morning bath would change things a bit, wouldn’t it?

I once saw a documentary about African kids using “Daisy-showers”. It might hold a solution in times of need.

My grandmother did washing for her family of five in the bathtub and hung laundry out to dry, even in freezing Minnesota winters.

I am not so sure about that ! I remember Svensto talking about it lately on her blog, how hard it was….A single person can do it easily though… My grandparents and their 8 kids had to, in the early part of the 20 th Century, no electricity, no phone, no camera, a well only, a fireplace, a hot house . Not much romance there…Lots of pain and heartache….And no hope for anything else… You are a “vacation settler” right now and it is fun, I don’t know how long the fun lasts…But these days, with the governments madness, who knows where we are heading….Lots of fear everywhere…Hoping certain groups will not exploit that fear to get into power.

    Fridge….agree
    Washing machine…agree
    Bathroom…..agree

As well as many other things that I find highly overrated, like fast food(is that stuff even meat?) automobiles (really wish we could just use horses again, cable television (200 channels and still boring). I could go on and on…my friends tell me I was born in the wrong timeframe.

After over a year of…roughing it? I can say that in fact, I do miss running water for baths! And as hot as it is here, the frig is sometimes the only thing standing between us and complete meltdown. Still, I MOSTLY agree! Have fun!

Yeah, the first thing that came to my mind before I got to the end was….what about winter.

There are advantages to hot water and indoor plumbing when the temperature plummets.

Shreve, curious…How do you keep busy all day long out there??? you should tell us what its like ..how one manages thier day to day things they have to do?? I guess it would be like pioneer days. All work ..just to survive or do you find time to relax and write and dream?
Marlene from Cambria OH also curious.. do Charlie and Chloe sleep inside the camper with you I was wondering how that worked with bears and wild animals around????? :-)

Are you sure about that? Refrigeration is overrated?

Give it time, Shreve. Here’s to hoping you don’t get sick.

I’ve just finished re-reading the Earth’s Children series by Jean Auel. This story takes place in the ice age times….no refrigeration, only lakes and rivers for baths and clean clothes…..I’ve thought of you often Shreve while reading the sixth book this past month.

Sherri, I read most of that series last year and I thought of Shreve so many times. I never recommended here it because I’m not sure it’s worth all the time invested. But there is much to learn from those books about prehistory.

Or if it were summertime in AL! We’ve had no relief from 90’s all summer and high humidity. Of course TX has been in the 100’s all summer.

Pretty much agree with those conveniences being conveniences in temperate weather when one’s single. In winter, or subtropical / tropical heat and / or a community setting… There’s a reason most of them were invented, after all ;)

Ah those pesky neighbors!! If it weren’t for them I might say clothing is overated! j/k

Have you seen Into the Wild?

awww, I’m so glad you’re enjoying your excursion and it sure sounds like all the critters are enjoying it too!! sounds like a great relaxing time and I think we all could use a little time off in the “wild.” Thank you so much for keeping up with pictures – I love to see them and Charlie and Chloe’s antics just make me feel good :)

I have been nothing but inspired by “The Daily Coyote” book! You are an amazing women Shreve. I admire your life and the courage to find your own life’s path in Wyoming.

We have a few things in common. Photography is a passion of mine. I love nature, animals and open, kind and loving human beings. I also have Celiac Disease. Diagnosed 3.5 years ago. My Lynx/Siamese mix cat helped me get through some very tough times the past 4 years.

I am not from Washington State but have resided here for 4 years. I am originally from Georgia. My husband and I are currently relocating to St. Petersburg, Florida the first week of September. I will miss the beauty of Washington and I love Seattle.

I love your photography. You can see my photos if you would like to. I am still in the learning phase. I have had no formal photography training. I also write poetry and may begin writing a book.

So how long before raw milk spoils? Or do you & the animals guzzle it all before it goes bad? Or do you keep food “refrigerated” in the stream? And how do you keep the animals safe from bears & mountain lions – & that rattlesnake? Do you have all your food & toiletries in bear boxes?

Well then I guess I must be a princess!! I love my washer & dryer, give thanks for the fridge and just adore my shower with the awesome rain head my thoughtful husband got me for Christmas! I did however as a child spend a summer on a lake in Maine where we took all our baths in the lake…used biodegradable shampoo and soap….Clarol’s Herbal Essence…the original stuff!!

There was a series of documentary films made a few years ago where ordinary people were set down in a situation to live as their ancestors might have, very interesting. They all had “House” in the title, I think: “1940s House”, “Manor House”, “Frontier House”, “Pilgrim House”. There have also been experiements in Britain sending people “back” to the Bronze Age. The harder the conditions, and the more people involved, the greater the tensions and dissent. You’re lucky to be flying solo, Shreve!

Thanks for taking the time & effort to keep us updated on this personal adventure/experiment/odyssey. I recognize and appreciate that it’s a process, and every moment of every day must bring new experiences, insights and focus. What a self-revelation to find that, for now anyway, all the modern “conveniences” are overrated. How lovely to be in the company of your farmily in such a beautiful setting; I’m certain they all innately understand that it’s a family unit up there and are forming even deeper bonds w/you and w/each other. That alone must be something to observe and experience. Whoddathunkit that a coyote, a hound, some cats, horse(s), a bull, a dairy cow and sweet baby calf could – and do – live in such harmony. LOVE it.

I hope, hope, hope it’s cooler on your mountain than it’s been almost everywhere. I’ve been working outside in the blazing sun (in an area near Boulder, CO) where the temps are 95+. Frankly, I’m over it entirely.

Loved your description of Frisco – how cute is THAT?!

Ah, I loves me my precious conveniences. Several years ago, Hubby asked me, “why don’t we go camping anymore?” My answer was, “because I like a shower at night and I don’t want to go out in the cold at 3 am to pee.”

So, we have a camper that goes on our pickup truck, and with good water conservation techniques and an outdoor shower (“gray” water storage is a bigger problem than fresh water) we can clean up every night and stay indoors to pee. The bed is WAAAY more comfortable than sleeping on a pad, too, and I can cook without small wildlife sneaking up and making off with some of the ingredients.

Finally, campers come with refrigerators, a great convenience when hubby insists on cold *pasteurized* milk on his cereal, and I want to cook for two days at a time and safely have leftovers.

Sorry, Shreve, but I can’t get with the program.

    August 10th, 2011 @ 4:37 pm

Oh, and finally… camping with a camper allows one to take the cats! Mind you, the (indoor-only) cats don’t think it’s necessarily a treat to go for a drive, but they do get to smell strange smells and see wildlife out the windows. Very exciting!

Pat D. I remember that series. It was on PBS. They used diaries and primary source documents but the participants where every day people. Usually a family. They had to learn the living techniques of the day, wrote in a diary and videotaped themselves.

I remember the primitive vacuum cleaner and the Victorian family having spaghetti for dinner, which really surprised me.

Chara, to which nom de plume are you referring, and what “things” could she possibly want to swing in her favor? FWIW, I’ve been following The Daily Coyote since Nov., 2007, and it’s completely out of character for her to engage in deception.

I apologize, Shreve, for taking the bait and responding to these ridiculous comments and accusations. This blog has been so beautifully untainted by negativity, and it’s a shame that anyone has to bring negativity to the table. 99% of us who follow this blog find it very uplifting, interesting and thought-provoking. Please take your negativity and skepticism elsewhere, Chara. Thank you.

    Jenny,
What if “Chara” is Shreve!? In which case she would be be telling the truth because her comment caused many of us to leap to her defense, thus swinging things in her favor.

Kind of messes with your mind a little, huh?

So the plot thickens, Dun Dun DUNNNNNN!

PS (As we all know, she has absolutely nothing better to do with her time than sit around causing mischief, haha.)

I guess even the best and purist websites have to have at least one. Go away Chara….we love Shreve and you don’t know anything about her to make that ridiculous comment. (blood boiling even though I know I should just ignore the stupidity)…..

Mlauippa : Yes, that was a neat series. I’m a history buff, so I loved it. Did you know Marco Polo brought noodles to Italy in the 14th century (1300s)? So spaghetti is older than we think!

Chara : Please provide your source for this info, or don’t say it.

I’ve been reading DC and HRD for about two years now, and I almost never post…but was prompted to by a certain comment in this section. One of the many, many reasons I enjoy these particular blogs is the lack of negativity and arguments. When people have disagreements, or are skeptical, there tends to be more of a “discussion” approach. When people either purposefully breach blog-specific community standards – which are pretty obvious if you’ve read much of the blog – or are simply rude…I really would like a “dislike” or “delete” button. However, I do think it is a credit to Shreve that she leaves the crap-posts up there – she is a better woman than I!
