I love these creatures! Probably one of my favorite birds; and that fact just makes them all the more brilliant. Thanks!

I saw some driving through Wisconsin the other day, and I was amazed at how large they were! We have them in our fields during the summer, but I usually only see them through binoculars (they don’t come too close to the farm with all our dogs) or sometimes flying overhead. I did a doubletake the other day because they seemed as big as ostriches…it was crazy! One of my favorite things about living in the northwoods of Wisconsin is watching them raise their babies. I get sick when I see just the parents, wondering where their baby is…they are such devoted parents! Now in summer I find myself waking up when I hear them chortling in the field nearby. I go outside (sans dogs) and try to watch them quietly. It’s very magical :)

Oh my god…this is like all of the Freddy movies combined for me. I’m terrified of certain birds, cranes among them. Yes. Weird.

I love their red beanies. Every crane has a yarmulke.

I never thought of Wyoming as being crane country. Are they just passing through?

The “medicine” of these cranes very much reminds me of you! Read and decide for yourself. :)
“When a crane comes into your life as a spirit teacher or totem you are being asked to use your past as a source of strength in the present.

Cranes appear in the lives of people who are well served by some degree of secrecy in their lives. The crane teaches keeping your own counsel, protection of family, and balance in life above all else.

A crane totem is also a harbinger of long life and success.

People with crane medicine are more revered by others than they imagine, and have long, successful lives. They are protective, wise, and gracious. They choose their battles carefully, choosing quiet wisdom and privacy over aggression.

An encounter with a crane is a powerful experience. You are being asked to look inward, show fairness to all persons, and protect your wisdom while sharing it in appropriate ways. In short, you are being shown the way to balance and good fortune.”

Alas. As I understand it, birds have feet muscles that contract as they sleep, thus keeping them on perches.
Double alas. Pliny the Elder told his son to stay home while he took a boat into Pompeii’s harbor to go rescue an old friend. Oops.

I love Sandhill Cranes. I see them every time I visit Reifel Migratory Bird Sanctuary in Ladner, BC (near where I’m from). Watching them raise their colts is one of the coolest experiences. You don’t want to get too near them at that point though!

You can see two pics of the cranes at Reifel on the wikipedia page for them. More than likely it’s the resident breeding pair. We have up to about 80 go through the area during migration every fall/winter.

Not just Pliny: in heraldry, the crane is by default “a crane in his vigilance”, a side view with a rock held in one upraised claw.
