Cloaca Riot

☆ May 6, 2014

First, a long-overdue ovation to your band name suggestions! Brilliant. Hilarious. I will be using them all when referring to the chickies from now on. Thank you for the laughs – I’m in awe of your brains.

The Bawking Heads are still living in a 3′ x 5′ crate in my bathroom, but they are on the verge of outgrowing that, too. When the weather is beautiful, I’ve been moving them outside – first, for just a few hours, and, most recently, all day. I built covers for some of my raised beds last year, and have taken one out of the garden to use as a temporary OeufSpring habitat. This way, they can safely get accustomed to the outside world with plenty of room to stretch their wings. They love it.

Chloe loves it, too. She is obsessed with chickens. She doesn’t chase our free-roaming hens and has never tried to nab one; her actions are best described as “following chickens closely.” When the Fustercluck is outside, she will stand beside their enclosure, her nose inches away from the chicken wire, for HOURS.

It’s almost time for Cheep Trick to permanently move outside. I’m going to miss their songs coming from my bathroom.

:) My dog, a Basset Hound Pit Bull cross is scared of the chickens. I have tried to introduce him slowly to them, but he shakes and cries. Yup, big vicious dog. Enjoy them. Chickens make such good pets

Years ago I had a lab beagle mix and whenever I took him to my friends farm he would help round up the chickens when they got loose. He like chloe wouldn’t hurt them but he would watch until they got loose then he would chase them back. Once in the coop he would go to the nests and pick up eggs and bring them to my friend. Dogs are awesome!

Shreve, your brain isn’t too uninspired, either — I love your “OeufSpring”!! Tres clever. :o)

How cool! This is what my border collie does too! And the names are just beyond hysterical!

Curious…what does Charlie do with them? Is he tempted to chase/catch/eat them or does he know that momma Shreve would get him?

The humor here is clever and hilarious (Cheep Trick! Bawking Heads!) and your post is a fun read. Thanks for sharing the fun.

Delightful post. Any time I need a moment of humor to brighten the day, I will flash to this pic of Chloe staring at the chickies. What a hoot – reminds me a bit of the photo of Charlie staring at the cabin wall when he was a wee pup.

And that is a mighty fine raised-bed cover you built there, too.

Thems some really handsome clucks. I just love their variety.

I see you have embraced your inner bird. I remember a post a while back where you weren’t so enamored of the foul fowl.

I wonder if Chloe is thinking these are something she can herd around once they are out in the open?

D/C ~ Charlie, surprisingly, is a friend to birds. Little birds hop around him and perch within reach and he never goes after them. He was BFFs with a raven this winter – they would walk around together and talk and even nap together. The chickens are, at best, a mild curiosity when he’s lounging under a tree and they happen by. Nothing worth getting up for.

That is one big bathroom you must have to hold a 3×5 crate and still allow room for you! Record the sounds they make and play them from your bathroom for your ‘Zen time’.

Chloe’s like “Fine, the coyote and raven can hang out, but I’ll do the domestic version with dog and chicken(s).”

    Fustercluck. That’s my favorite!!

They are one unique looking bunch of chickies. Looking forward to watching them continue to thrive under Chloe’s watch.

Shreve, your comment about Charlie and the Raven was intriguing. Did the Raven stick around through spring or is he gone? Don’t know about you over there, but here in Illinois we had one unusually bad-boy Winter and many migratory birds who usually settle in Illinois to overwinter just did not make it this year. I was putting out daily rations of corn and seed for wild geese, ducks, squirrels, birds, and anything else that wanted food during the worst months as everything was covered in many, many feet of ice and snow. They could not dig into it and it was too late to fly further south. Were you feeding the Raven, too? Or did he just befriend Charlie?

Wonderful, both image and words. Makes me think about some pretty mundane things (watching water flood a dry gutter / ditch / creekbed, for instance) that *I* can watch for hours. Don’t ask me to explain why.

T ~ Raven is gone now. I never fed it but I fed the chickens somewhat nearby and a lot of other birds came to eat there, but I never saw the raven eating chicken feed. In fact, I never saw it anywhere when it wasn’t with Charlie.

It’s not a huge surprise that a coyote and a raven would be friends. They are both tricksters in Native American lore. There is no telling what they were planning. It might be wise to keep an eye out. Ha!

Martha’s comment about the pit mix who was scared of chickens has me laughing as does Fustercluck.

For Jackie— I love your observation that raven and coyote are both tricksters. They’d be besties! I am a trickster, as well!
