I did not watch all of the graduation ceremony but I thought your speech was great. It was short, simple, and very wise. You never, that I could see, looked down at notes and I don’t think I could have pulled that off! It was extremely generous that you gave a copy of your book to each graduate. Great job Shreve!

Perfect. What a wonderful speech. Just 7 minutes long? Absolutely brilliant, I know driven by your voice (lack thereof) but in the end, short wins out. Always. You packed each minute with a truth that is layered by truth. Completely brilliant. I wish every graduate, everywhere, could listen to this.

Oh Shreve, your speech was fantastic! I felt SO PROUD of you up there, and got tears in my eyes when they showed the pics I know so well. I was thinking “That’s right, people, you have no idea how AWESOME this lady is and you should be so grateful that she’s speaking to you today!” I realized afterwards that I felt the way I do when one of my friends does something really cool. I DO feel like we’re friends, because I’ve been reading your blog from the beginning. You know nothing about me, but I’m thankful for your blog and everything you do. Blessings to you!

I cried when I saw the familiar pictures, especially Ricardo. My heart is still broken over his horrible death. Precious little guy. I look forward to seeing him in person one day. I woke up this morning still in bed, grabbed my phone and started checking emails. I’ve been following your blog and photos of Charlie for several years. When I saw that you had posted a video of your commencement speech I was excited. I’ve never seen a video of you. But when I listened to your words I got tears in my eyes. I was so incredibly touched by your words and your wisdom. I’m 56 and wished I had heard and heeded those words 30 years ago. You gave those graduating students a beautiful and inspiring gift. But it was gift to me as well. I’m going through a struggle of my own and your words were quite fitting for me as well. I thought to myself “I’d like to hear this speech everyday IT would truly help and inspire me to continue forward…even through the bad times”. So thank Shreve!! All the best to you as you continue in life and in your own healing!!

I read Daily Coyote shortly after it was published, re-read it recently and have followed Charlie on Tuesdays for years. Shreve, That was great. So sorry that your voice is still not working the way you would like, but perhaps it was meant to be that way at this particular time, as it hopefully made those students really listen to what you had to say. I am echoing many of the posts before me, in that I also wish I had someone tell me about all the ups and downs of life and how to deal with them. I loved the pictures shown of Charlie, Eli, Ricardo, and all the other members of your farmily. May you continue to heal and be well. Congratulations on being asked to speak Shreve. I was at my daughter’s Masters ceremony at the University of Vermont this past weekend. I read your book several years ago when I was going through a tough time. Although I have an adventurous spirit like you, you showed us it’s actually possible to follow your dreams and find your true north. I truly commend you, and I’m slowly getting to realize mine. Shreve, I am a parent of a CSU graduate and had the pleasure of hearing your speech. I have to say that it was the BEST commencement address I’ve ever heard. (I am old; I’ve heard many!)
I have an adult son with severe chronic leg pain that sat beside me and absorbed every word. He’s been struggling with “Life” and your words were a godsend. How awesome to deliver the First Noble Truth (there is suffering) as a personal experience to the graduates and the outcome when you find and stay in your truth! Shreve you are a wise one to transmit this truth so authentically. I attended almost 30 years of commencement speeches at UC Berkeley and this is the only one I’ll remember.

I felt as though I was watching a close friend give a commencement address. It was wonderful learning more about you by hearing and watching you give your words and thoughts. I feel as though Charlie and the rest are part of my family too. So sorry about your having to have surgery recently. But you seem to be bouncing back beautifully. as a reader of your books and a long time follower of your blogs, photos and twitter, i, like everyone else here was so pleased to finally “see and hear” you. you radiate an intangible inner spirit that does jump off the written page and emanate through your photographs, but it is almost blinding when seeing and hearing you in person. thank you for this gift of sharing yourself with so many others than those fortunate graduates! your words will go with me, strengthen me and bolster my courage when others try to protect me from myself. i am 60 and wish i had heard your words many years ago, perhaps my life would have taken a different path, but the words are here now, so that path will open up from today. better late than never!
is there any way your could publish your speech? either by blog, or possibly as something through your website for purchase? a small pamphlet or booklet perhaps? it would not have to be a fancy “published” thing unless you so choose, but i am sure there would be an audience to read and share and gift your wise words. thank you and many blessings in your continued journey and love to the farmily!

Wow, Shreve. It couldn’t possibly have been a better address. Not a single wasted word or pause, and every word breathtakingly wise. Hope it wasn’t too uncomfortable for your throat; as many have mentioned, it added poignancy to your words… as if any more poignancy was needed or even possible. And by the way, you looked lovely.

I left a comment on a prior post but it might have been overlooked. Your voice sounds just like mine did after I had surgery on my cervical spine. They went in through the front, same place as thyroid surgery, because its less invasive.
The bad thing about it was that they damaged the nerve leading to my vocal folds. The left one is completely paralyzed. They didn’t notice this until A YEAR after my surgery when my voice STILL wasn’t back. The damage was permanent and I was due to have surgery to thicken them but the right one ended up growing over to meet the left and my voice came back.
Have you had them check to see that both of your vocal chords are moving?

I was so inspired by your talk, Shreve; and thank you for sharing it with us. You are a very wise young woman and I still refer to some of the lessons you shared in your book about Charlie, particularly your realization that you needed to be the leader of Charlie’s pack, and that that involved living with the “sacrifices” you both had in that commitment.

Such a valuable perspective presented with clarity. It is so easy for us to default to approaching life from a place of avoidance and fear–fear of loss, failure, and disappointing others. When we do this we keep our lives so much smaller than they should be, and also reinforce the smallness of our friends and families lives. Lovely speech. As a speech pathologist specializing in voice problems, I would bet that you have a paralyzed vocal fold. I hope that the ENT you see can offer you a swift fix. A medialization procedure (using Restylane, collagen, or other synthetic material) can be done in the office under local anesthesia in about 20 minutes, and would do wonders to strengthen your voice (and your stamina, swallowing, etc). I’m glad to see that you’re going to get scoped soon.

I have been reading your blog for a few years, and read your book about Charlie (and so much more). I am not a big “commenter” so this , I think, might be my second comment on your site. (the first regarding the child-free lifestyle). My first urge is to fawn like a silly person, I admire what you have done and continue to do, and love that you share it with all of us. But I will not go on in this vain because I really want to simply comment on this speech. It is a very freeing thing you say to these graduates, that one cannot avoid pain! A most wonderful reality which can give one the liberty to peruse that which frightens us. This is a wonderful message, and I am happy to hear it now. Though I am 46 years old and know this, hearing it put this way, your way, makes me feel so much more brave, maybe because I know you are right? But hearing you say it made a bell ring for me. I just wanted to let you know that. Thanks again for what you share with the world.

Your wise words to the graduates resound in my inner thoughts about how I usually first react whenever my adults children are making their own life decisions. It seems my first reaction comes from a deep well of fear soup that gets stirred up and wants to boil over to warn them of all the potential dangers and pitfalls they might encounter with every new change in their lives. Your words form a solid touchstone that I can use to calm my inner fears for my children and let them make their way free of extra baggage from me. Well done and thank you!

So awesome!!! I graduated from CSU back in 1997 and immediately moved to Bend, Oregon…to follow my truth. Pain has been part of my experience and I value it for allowing me to learn and grow. Thank you for such a wonderful commencement speech. I am sure you had a great impact on many, just as you have on me. I have been following you for the last 5 years (?) I guess? Charlie was little and you had just moved to the ranch. I am mesmerized by your courage and devotion to following your intuition…your truth. Thank you for the gentle reminder of its importance and value. Cheers Shreve. If you are ever in Bend, Oregon I’d love to buy you a gluten free beer.

Wow. Those were the exact words I needed to hear today. Life has been knocking my family down for the past two years and counting. We followed our truth and the pain came anyway. Thank you. Brought tears to my eyes.

That was really beautiful. You are very insightful and so lucky to have that. It looks like I am not the only one that needed to hear what you said. I have been feeling very disconnected and angry and I needed to hear that reassurance to let go and not take the safe route. Your speech gave me one of those soulful cries, a release.

Your commencement speech was outstanding in content and presentation. I am 71 years old and have followed you and Charlie since he was a puppy. Thank you for sharing yourself and your fur babies. You are as beautiful on the outside as you are on the inside.

I am very moved by your speech and your wisdom therein. I have had recurring medical surgeries and disabilities over the past 12 years and have had very difficult traumatic events in my family. Your wise words have really inspired me and help me to see these difficult events as hurdles to get over and to move on to my truth of trying to live a good life. I have always admired you and been amazed by you and all that you have done. (I’ve been a follwer since Charlie was a darling little pup). Your wise words and beliefs you have expressed regarding your own struggles touched my soul, and I thank you and wish you more strength and courage to heal through all of your difficulties (which as you made me see) we all suffer from in some way. God Bless you, Shreve, and Thank you! I love you like a daughter, and would be very proud of you if you were one of my own daughters!

Catching up with this VERY belatedly. Thanks for sharing with us — I live in Boulder and, had I known you were speaking just up the road from me, I would have driven up to FC just to see and hear you. Just curious . . . did you, by any chance, get a chance to meet Professor Temple Grandin while you were there? I think you two are kindred souls. I’ve only heard her speak once, but it was truly a “transplendent” experience, as I’m sure your address was.

I just finishe’d reading The Daily Coyote and have been looking at everything else I can find on you, Shreve. Loved seeing and hearing you! Love your book! I was so afraid it was gonna have a sad/bad ending… I was raised in Michigan woods and am always amazed when a “city person” can move out and rough it. Good job!
