Out, out, damn cough…

☆ February 29, 2016

I got sick. A sore throat. And when I say sore throat, I mean forest fire in my trachea. I don’t think I’ve had a sore throat like this since high school. Sorry, niece, for the next eighteen years, I’m coming to visit a week before your big birthday party.

When I first moved to the boonies, I missed delivery food on a daily basis. (It doesn’t exist here, nor do public transportation or gay bars.) That longing faded, cropping up once a month or so, then faded even more – at this point, it’s nearly forgotten. The only time I really miss it is when I’m sick.

I have all the ingredients to make hot and sour soup, and I have a fantastic recipe memorized (I make it vegetarian and use dried mushrooms), but do I have the strength to stand upright for twenty minutes while I make it?

No!

Delivery foooooood….. I miss you……………….. sniff.

I won’t lie to you – I have been known to pull a kitchen chair up to the stove when sick so I don’t have to stand up while I stir. No judgement here – do what you gotta do!

If we could get there, you’d have about a thousand bowls of soup.

Take care; everyone is thinking of you (but it still ain’t a bowl of nice soothing soup delivered … ) Argh!! Where’s my delivery drone ? ?

Wishing you a speedy recovery! I feel your pain – years ago I had had a nasty infection, when every gulp was like a cut across my throat. I still remember it. Urgh, must be horrible.

But thanks for the dinner idea! ;-)

Sore throats are the worst. When mine is sore I rarely remember to gargle with salt water–but when I do, it helps!

Thanks for the recipe it sounds delicious. I hope you can make it. I know the telepathic version isn’t as good but I’ll send it anyway.

Chicken soup is definitely overrated when you’re sick – Hot & sour is the best (if you can get it/get to it). A good, healthy and very easy alternative is miso soup. I get miso from SouthRiverMiso.com and it will keep/live for a long, long time in the fridge. Just add water for soup (if you can add more ingredients, better, but just the miso broth is nice). They have a Garlic Red Pepper Miso – great for seasoning dishes.

A spoon full of honey sucked slowly will soothe that sore throat and please your palate at the same time. Get better soon.

Thanks for providing the recipe link. Looks healing, will pick up missing ingredients next time out. I too miss delivery food from the Bay area!

One medicinal healing brew I use for sore throats or feeling out of sorts, includes a hot thermos of:
Herba Tussin Tea bags (in 4 cups water) boiled down with ginger and turmeric, (sometimes garlic, cinnamon and/or pinch of nutmeg to get fancy) strain, then add apple cider vinegar and raw honey and lemon. Make it to taste and keep in a thermos to sip throughout the day.

Recently found the ingredients (minus the tea) in a concentrated form that looks like it will scare all irritating spirits from the body (haven’t tried it).

Awww…*hugs* to you in your misery. I have always found that ginger works weirdly well to cut the pain of a sore throat. (fresh ginger juice if ya have it, hot water, lemon, and honey—heat and sip soothingly.) May the Esophagus Gods bless you with abundant relief.

Suzette, yes a homemade brew of chicken broth is supreme (if already made). South River is great Miso and 8 of their 10 varieties are gluten free. I’m a Chickpea Miso fan, no soy or gluten.

Sending healing prayers your way. Wish I could bring you some of my vegetable chicken soup (gluten free) I made yesterday. It’s yummy, low low fat and good for gallbladder issues, which I have right now. Turned 50 – and my organs are waging a revolt!

Ugh… sore throats sooo claustrophobic. Good hints here; I echo the salt water gargle, with warmest water you can tolerate. Honey not only soothing but antibiotic & antiviral action as well.

Look at all of us loving mother hens, hehe. We want to help so badly, like you doctor and pamper the other members of your farmily. I agree with C in Florida: “if we could get there, you’d have about a thousand bowls of soup.” …And sherbet and cold cider and ice.

Oh please please share your recipe. I live in the land of being able to order out hot and sour soup, however none of the restaurants around me now make anything that remotely resembles what I know hot and sour soup should taste like. If I could make it at home that would be wonderful! I love it for colds as well. I currently drown canned chicken noodle soup with Sriracha for my colds. It suffices, but it’s not the same.

Is there anything like Seamless in your area? They pick-up and deliver food from places that don’t officially have “delivery”.

P.S. – Just noticed “cough” in your caption. If this is what’s been making the rounds, hang in there, it will eventually go away. I’ve battled awful cough-to-bronchitis for a month, and yesterday was first day in wks I haven’t sounded like barking seal or dying bear. Seems everybody has it front range CO, probably up your way, too. Vit C may have helped, but how can you really know, right? All the best, sweet girl.

Oh, Shreve, you have my sympathies. Have been there myself since Feb 12, when I woke up with a sore throat. Like Jenny C, I’ve been doing the barking seal/dying bear thing ever since. I have a doctor’s appointment this Friday. I’m hoping for no bronchitis/pneumonia. Happily, I’ve been able to order in as much spicy Chinese food/soups as I’ve had appetite for. I wish I could send you some. This will probably knock the starch out of you, so please let Mike help you.

Sending hugs and best wishes, and wishing I could send real help!

Oh heck, sorry to hear it. Lots of good suggestions above. My go-to remedy is a brewed pot of plenty of grated ginger, chopped garlic and cayenne pepper flakes (or chipotle powder); drink the whole pot, and brew and drink a second one without switching out ingredients. I swear it’ll scare/sweat anything out of you! The taste isn’t for everyone, but I love it.

A better-tasting but still effective version of Heidi’s recipe:
Into a thermos put grated ginger, honey, lemon juice, and one or two of those small dried red peppers. Half fill with boiling water; use the handle end of a wooden spoon to mash up the ginger and peppers; close and shake well; fill with boiling water and shake again. When I have a sore throat I live on this. You can use the ginger and peppers again, but add more lemon and honey.

Get well soon! Throat on fire is the absolute worst. I had one so bad last year that I cried when I went to the doctor and he told me it was a virus so there was nothing he could give me that would end the misery any sooner. Just had to ride it out. He did send me home with a prescription for lidocaine (no instructions on exactly how to use it, had to figure that out with Google), and it did nothing. The pain was just too far down my throat to get the stuff there and keep it there long enough to numb it. Worst.Week.Of.My.Life.
